A great learning place for little ones. I think this place is a great place for kids up to about 10. It is not only fun but educational. I find this is a great rainy day activity. However once you go, it gets old because the activities don't change often. Over school vacations, the children's museum offers many different special activites for the kids. The price is very reasonable and many times the local library has free or low cost passes.

I used to play hockey in highschool, but i'm not good enough for college level, and i really miss skating. it's almost like flying. i love going down to the fleet skating center when it's open in the winter months, especially during times when it's not too busy. it's only five dollars, and there's a student discount, too. it's great fun and great exercise!

Great park located in the heart of Providence. It is right by the water, and I do a lot of my running there. As far as city running goes it is very serene, but of course any city park will be relatively noisy and crowded. They have boat rides that you can do on the rivers, which are also very fun.

Neither the selection nor the prices are everything one might hope for in an Army Navy surplus store. The store’s small size and Thayer Street location probably account for that. Nonetheless, the store is crammed with a variety of items, and if you’re on the East Side and need relatively inexpensive hiking socks or outdoor clothes it’s worth checking out.

Providence Cycle is a large well stocked bike shop which has skate (both in-line and ice) equipment too. Unlike many bike shops all the staff really are very knowledgeable about all aspects of cycling. From road racing to commuting they know what they’re talking about. The only drawbacks to the novice shopping here is that there may be too much pressure to buy high-end stuff that isn’t necessary.

The Sub Museum is a real experience. You are touring an actual Russian sub used throughout the Cold War. Our guide was really excellent and gave the sub a really good historical context. You really could feel the and urgency that must have plagued the men on the sub. The ship itself requires good flexibility to get around and you take a short test to see if you can do it.

The Hub is a small bicycle shop with limited inventory that is open during limited hours. However, it is my first choice of bicycle shops in Providence. While the stock is small the owners are incredibly knowledgeable and will be able to order anything you want or need. More importantly, the owners are incredibly knowledgeable about all aspects of cycling and cycling history and culture and will take the time to talk to you as much as you want. It is the sort of place where you can just hang out without any pressure to buy anything. In addition, the shop is attached combined with a used furniture store, “The Zoo,” that has some really interesting stuff. Worth checking out, if it hasn’t been bought yet, is the toothpick coffee table by a RISD graduate.

If you’re ever wondering what it was like to live in the house of one of the biggest plantation owner, you can see it first hand at the John Brown House Museum. I went here two years ago and was very impressed with the mansion. Although it was one of the first mansions I have ever been in, it certainly lived up to its name was being one of the most magnificent and elegant mansions in Rhode Island. Besides its fine craftsmanship, the mansion also houses a part of Rhode Island heritage and history and is a must see for its elegance.

More
Button Hole is small and has an unfortunate beginning (the horrible carjacking/double murder incident), but is a wonderful short course. I spent a few afternoons there hitting balls, and I was pleasantly surprised by the calm and inviting atmosphere inside Providence. Despite its dubious location, the grounds are well-maintained and screened to promote a sense of tranquility - and that's a Must-Have when playing (or trying to play) Golf. The fees are low, and they frequently offer coupons for a Free Small Bucket of balls. The grounds are well landscaped and the greens are definitely GREEN. There's a small but diverse crowd that frequents Button Hole, and everyone I've met there is friendly, quiet and respectful. This is a great place to practice or introduce your kids to Golf, or even for a date.
Enjoy!
