Fun Place 5/25/2010

In reference to the two previous comments, I'm sorry you experience homophobia in your life, it's disappointing and regrettable. The Newsroom, however, I would not classify as ""not gay friendly"" or abusive to gay culture. I've been stopping through for years and been waited on by gay members of their staff. The servers are happy and some I've seen for years. I find it hard to believe a homophobic manager would hire gay employees. As for the food you brought in, it is a health code infraction to have outside open containers of food or drink inside a restaurant. I'm sure you were told bringing food inside a business specializing in providing food for others was not welcome. It wasn't done because your gay. There are more than a few gay bars around downtown meaning there are gay people in every restaurant; they have a wine list as long as your arm; this isn't ""Brothers"". Pros: big patio at a busy corner, huge wine list Cons: don't really have any more

Rude 2/9/2010

I went to the newsroom after a Vikings game with my partner from out of town. My partner placed a souvenir bucket with some popcorn leftover from a football game we just attended on one side of the table. All was going fine, the waitress was really nice and we ordered food and drinks. We'd been there for a while enjoying ourselves, and we held hands and were having a great time when the manager came up and literally yelled "" Pros: Our waitress was really nice Cons: The manager was a jerk more

Won't be back 1/29/2010

Overpriced and not gay friendly. Manager was rude and embarrassed us. We felt uncomfortable and left. Pros: friendly waitress Cons: not gay friendly, overpriced more

Just don't go 2/9/2009

my friend and i were looking for a place to grab a bit the other night and i suggested stopping in there because i have been by in the summer time and always wanted to check it out. the summer is probably the only time you want to go, and only because you are sitting on a patio enjoying people watching and the heat. the inside of this place is chintzy. it's filled with tvs which made my stomach turn, though the real culprit for my nausia probably had more to do with the food. it's just bad. the dinner menu is wayyyyyy overpriced for what you end up eating. i didn't go for anything too meaty like the steaks or the burger (why are the sandwiches on a seperate menu??). instead i opted for a pasta dish. seriously, why spend 15 dollars for something that you could dump out of a lipton instant meals bag and heat up in your microwave? my companion wasn't impressed with his food and neither of us finished our meals. and it's not like you are paying for the ambiance, it's like tgi fridays in newsprint. there were a couple other tables, but mostly the staff just hung out looking bored and annoying. our server wasn't fast, wasn't very attentive and didn't have much personality: the only thing he actually did do was reinforce how annoying it was to be there. the place is lame. Pros: outdoor seating Cons: everything else more

Nice space, good meal, GREAT CHICKEN WINGS 12/14/2008

GET THE WINGS AS AN APPETIZER. The dining area is interesting with a cool news room theme. Our server was great and the food was delicious and not too expensive. more

Below Average Food and Service 6/19/2008

My boyfriend and I wanted to try out the News Room since it's close to my apartment and on the trendy ""Eat Street"" of Minneapolis. I'd heard there was a good atmosphere. Pros: Nice atmosphere, outdoor seating, price Cons: food, service more

Avoid breakfast 6/9/2008

The breakfast menu is pretty small so it was tough to find something for my 3 year old. I had a ham and asparagus with goat cheese omelette and my daughter had the pancakes. While my omelette had a good taste some of the asparagus was a little undercooked and the pancakes were nothing to brag about. The service was terrible there were only three tables at the time and everything took forever even trying to pay the tab. Will NEVER go there again. And what's up with the ship in a news room??????? more

There are better options downtown 2/9/2008

If you like average food and average service then the News Room is for you. You know what you'll get, but you won't be delighted. Pros: Decent Bar Food Cons: Slow Service more

no flair, no significance, and when I go downtown, I want that, plus decent food and service. I just don't get this place. more

Nice Lunch Spot 5/6/2006

My wife and I enjoyed a very nice lunch at one of the outdoor tables. Knew nothing about this place until we walked by. The Cajun Popcorn appetizer was perfectly spiced, lightly battered, and came drizzled with a wonderful remoulade. Most renditions are way overspiced and hidden in thick soggy batter. Our sandwiches were also perfect. Nice balance of flavors. Mine included perfectly done fries, and my wife's included what looked to be homemade potato chips. Prices were reasonable. Service was very good, and looked to be at other tables as well. Although we didn't have any wine, the list looked very good (not just the usual suspects) and included a large selection by the glass. Pros: Outdoor Seating, Good Food, Reasonable Prices more

Trendy but overrated 4/11/2006

I had breakfast on Sunday at the Newsroom. I agree with the previous reveiwer it should be Bad News. First, the host was aloof when I asked if I could sit at the bar for food. The bartender serving as a waiter was good. He was attentative and friendly but then not that busy. When my food I arrived (i ordered eggs, bacon, pots) the food wasn't that good. I mean for bacon and eggs and pay $9.00. I have to say the coffee is some of the best I have had in minneapolis. For breakfast the next day I went to Peter's Grill. Had the same, eggs, etc. for only $5.50 and it was alot better. Skip this place for breakfast. Pricey for not good food. Pros: Good Service, Friendly Waiter more

Worst Service Ever Experienced 4/1/2006

First impression of the restaurant were good. Busy, with a lively atmosphere. Couple of things to point out: Good selection of beers.,but beware; tap beers only come in a small glass. The glass sizes resemble a European 1/2 pint. We enjoyed the food, and the portions were quite big. HOWEVER, i would have to say that i have never experienced service like this in my life. It took 10minutes after being seated before we had a drinks order taken and a further 10 before our food order. We received the bill from our server without being asked if we wished any desserts or coffees and also before she had even cleared our table. Lastnight was the first time i had never left a gratuity for my server. By the conversations we could hear by our near by tables; they were also disgusted by her service. Overall: Good food. Terrible service. Pros: Good Beer Selection, Well Priced Cons: Terrible Service more

Lost in reservations! 11/14/2005

Overall... I had a good time. The food was excellent, and the service was fantastic. And the martinis... uh... FANTASTIC!!! The only problem that I had, was that they didn't have my reservation, knowing that I put one in earlier in the week. It was for my wife's b-day and I know 12-15 people were going to be joining us. They (The Newsroom), corrected the problem by seating us anyway and took 5% off our tab. Which was given back (and then some) in the tip. So, I'd strongly recommend this place to anyone. But, I WOULD strongly advice, calling to confirm your reservation... if you make one!!! more

Rude, inexperienced server! 9/17/2005

Food, overpriced but good. Server was rude and put a party of 30 on one tab. I could overlook this and place blame on lack of serving experience; if only he were nice. Much better places to go downtown. Pros: decent happy hour, good food Cons: SERVICE more

Favorite Bar in Downtown Minneapolis 8/10/2005

This is a great place for after work drinks. I recommend sitting in the outside patio area or the bar area. They have a low-priced happy hour menu of drinks and appetizers. I have tried several things on the menu and have enjoyed them all. It tops my list of bars in downtown minneapolis. Pros: Happy Hour Menu, Outdoor Seating, Decor Cons: Parking more

Fun place to go with friends 7/26/2005

I went there for happy hour. We had drinks and tried two of their flatbreads. It was very tasty and I'm going back there tonight because I liked it so much. I haven't visited the bathrooms yet, but I'm looking forward to it. Pros: great atmosphere, tasty food more

Newsflash - this place sucks. 8/12/2004

OVERRATED. We went for a large group dinner recently and they had a limited menu. They tried to pass off hamburger as ""shaved ribeye."" It was HAMBURGER. Our server was inattentive and not very friendly. For our table of eight, our food came out over a 10 minute period - that's a long time to stagger food delivery. And I actually saw the manager tell an older couple to go outside and read the sign for directions on how to get into the side entrance, rather than direct them himself. The ""sign"" had two sentences on it. Pros: Nice decor. Cons: , Marginal food, Overpriced more

Avoid! 11/8/2003

You should avoid this place at any peak times or during a convention. they can't handle crowds and the food is just not worth the wait. You can find better service and food elsewhere. more
