Newbury Day Spa

I was referred to this spa by the hotel I stayed in and boy was it a mistake to go there. I went in for an eyebrow wax and manicure. The manicure was OK, but the woman who did my eyebrows did not know the proper technique and did not listen. I told her to keep my eyebrows as thick as possible and simply to clean up the stray hairs. Instead she waxed the upper part and took off 1/3 of my actual eyebrow FROM THE TOP!!!! Now my upper brow is naked and the hair folicles are visible. She also waxed from the bottom and took off almost all of the outer half of my left eyebrow. Now my eyebrows are uneven - one thicker than the other, the left one is missing most of the outer half and the top third of my brows are naked and weird-looking. I bought some Rogain this morning and am hoping they will grow back. Avoid this place at all costs. Cons: Not too clean more

I have been coming here for over 3 years based on the rave reviews for Irene that I received from several friends. I didn't get Irene my 1st time and I got Oksana instead. I have gone to her ever since. She always remembers me even if it's been several months since she's last seen me. She's very friendly and extremely meticulous in makine sure every hair is gone! One stick or many sticks I have NEVER left this place with anything more than a good wax job! The price is right and I'm able to get in and get out without any fuss. I've never been unhappy with any of the services I've received. I recently ended up with Irene in a pinch and she lived right up to the reputation that I had heard of those 3 years ago. I can't imagine going to any other place and I won't until I have to move out of the city which I have no plans to do at this time. Not everybody can be pleased with everthing but this is one VERY satisfied customer right here! I visited Oxana for brazilian bikini waxes for 4 years or so and her skill and dedication to good work is unparalleled! I've been to countless salons and spas around the country and have never found anyone who gives quite the same level of bikini wax. Not only will she not let you leave until she's completely satisfied there's not a hair out of place, but she's friendly and chatty the entire time and is a genuinely sweet person. I recently moved to Miami and have yet to find anyone comparable to her skill level and miss her dearly! I highly recommend booking with her. The other girls are good as well just not quite as gentle and chatty as she is. Pros: Price, Skill level, atmosphere, quick! Cons: none, its the best more

I just wrote a review a few months ago about previous positive experiences, and I still love coming here! I don't go that often, maybe once a year or so, but I always have a fantastic treatment with Oxana! She is so friendly & personable and always treats you like gold! She did miss a few spots, but I have ingrown hairs, so that was part of the problem. I did have a credit card issue with the spa after, but it was a misunderstanding that was fixed promptly on my part. I had my very first wax at Newbury Day Spa with Oksana and she was the best! Despite other reviews I read, she is very friendly, talkative and does not reuse sticks in the wax! She was also very gentle with the waxing, as I told her I have very sensitive skin. I had a little redness after, but she suggested I use baby powder and witch hazel and it worked wonderfully. I went back a second time and there was less redness after the wax. She didn't miss a spot! She provided a lot of information and was very knowledgable and competent about waxing and I am definitely booking an appointment with her before my vacation! *Side note: The wax used is HOT, and heat kills most bacteria, like when you boil water, it kills harmful bacteria. Most salons use the same wax all day because if they didn't, it would be too gosh darn expensive and they'd charge you more, so get over it!* Pros: Wonderful staff, skilled & knowledgable professionals Cons: Narrow, creaky elevator, receptionist doesn't smile more

I've been going to Newbury Day Spa for over a year for Brazilian waxing. No matter who does it for me, I'm in and out in 10 minutes and the job is as painless as possible. One of the best parts is that while other spas have upped their prices for Brazilian waxing, Newbury Day Spa still has one of the most competitive prices around AND they do an impeccable job. It's accessible, I can almost always book an appointment even on the day of, and the ladies there are precious. Pros: skill, price, accessibility Cons: none, seriously more

They were really lazy and hasty. Unlike most spas, they gave me barely anytime to change, then did the wax terribly and made me bruised. They didn't even give me tissue or a towel to clean up afterwards like other spas. They literally spent 3 minutes total on a brazilian. I strongly recommend people to pay the extra $5-10 to go to a nicer place that won't make you bruised. Pros: Nice receptionist Cons: everything else that matters more

I called this salon to book 2 appointments for me and my good friend. I was looking on their web-site and I noticed they had a different price quoted than what the lady was telling me. She rudely told me that because they have just moved to "Newbury street" their prices have increased and they will not honor their old pricing...even though it was on their web-site. That was fine by me at the time as I was still interested in booking the appointments. Well, the owner ( she identified herself as such) told me to "have a nice day". When I asked if I could still book the appointment she gave me a firm "NO" and again told me to have a nice day. Horrible! I guess with the move to Newbury street the owner must have felt that she didn't need the 2 new clients to add to the spa's base of customers. I was highly offended and booked the spa treatment at her neighbors on Newbury street. I will not be recommending that salon to anyone I know. 2 words to describe: Pompous and ignorant!! more

It was my first time getting a Brazilian, and Irene was amazing!!! She was quick and gentle, and made me fell very comfortable. After reading the reviews, I gave this place a try and saw Irene for a bare brazilian. I was seriously out in less than 10 minutes. Even though its quick, I didn't feel like she was rushing, she just knows what shes doing. She gets right down to business and is very professional (doesn't miss any spots). She asked me to look over it at the end to see if it was ok, she was really nice. I'll definatly go back. more

Based on the reviews here, I made an appointment with Irene. She is very friendly and has a lot of experience with waxing. Before I could say "ouch" my brazillian was done. I highly recommend her. While visiting Boston, my friends and I booked a spa package with Newbury Day Spa. They offered what we were looking for at a reasonable price. The tiny elevator that took us to the 5th floor was a little scary. The staff was friendly and helpful. Boris gave me an awesome massage. Rita's mani and pedi was immaculate, but I was dissapointed that the pedi did not include any massage. Overall a good experience. I would definetely go back! Pros: Hospitality, cost more

I had oksana, and i fell in love with her work the very first time i went. I am her client for life. I first chose her because of all the awesome reviews i saw. Now, i notice someone had nothing better to do but write about something very stupid and untrue about oksana, and the spa. I purposely watched oksana do my wax. I saw that she did change the stck that she waxes with, and i even asked her about it, she said they do not reuse under any circumstances. I really think that the spa is amazing. its not too pricey, it has awesome location, the people there are friendly. Oksana is by far my favorite, I truly reccomend her to all of you reading this. I made an appointment with Irene for a bikini wax since I wanted to check out the place for a while. The decor is a little old, but gets the job done. Irine was very pleasant to talk to and very fast doing the wax. Thanks to her quick work, the waxing was virtually pain free. I highly recommend Irene and will be returning in the future. more

I made an appointment with Oksana because of all the reviews here. It was close and cheap ($44). I was in doubt when I first arrived at the building and took the 3-person max elevator up to the 5th floor. Their space itself was quaint but nice. The lady at the front desk never cracked a smile and wasn't very friendly. Oksana was nice but not very talkative during the procedure so I fully focused on what she was doing. Additionally, I noticed that the other reviewer was right - they REUSE the wooden sticks. Meaning - they'll reuse the stick on you. I have NO problem with them reusing the stick, BUT they're dipping it into a COMMON container. So now that they've double-dipped into that container when waxing me.. they'll be RE-doubledipping into the container the the next customer and so forth. She did a very thorough job, waxed front, back (where others have ignored), sides, lips and plucked broken hairs. It was a little more painful than my visit to Bella Spa because she didn't apply pressure when ripping off the paper. She used a lotion and baby powder afterwards which felt better, but I did have red dots (at the follicle) everywhere signifying broken capillaries. Overall: Love the thorough job, but don't think I'll be returning just for the sanitation concern. 3 stars overall 4 stars for oksana 03/18/09 Despite my prior concerns, I came back to check the reviews because Oksana really was amazing. I decided to give the other waxers a try thinking they might be more sanitary - there were some reviewers that said they changed sticks. 1. they're still double dipping. 2. the price went up 3. service wasn't that great. 4. I've tried 2 other people instead of oksana and they're not good at all. do yourself a favor if you still really want to try this place, just wait for oksana. she'll get the job done and left me smooth for MUCH longer than any of the other 2. She's the only one that even makes any of this worth it and it's really not anymore. Sadly, i will not return for good anyhow because I'm still concerned.. So here is the thing! The reviews you are reading that are negative are probably coming from the same woman who take the day off to go to the spa, or don?t work in the first place. This is hands down the best place in the city if you are like me and fell that things like waxing, manicures, and facials are nothing more than female MAINTNANCE!! Because for working chicks like myself, they are necessary for maintenance, please spare me the cup of tea and thanks but I already have a bottle of water?.its my lunch break!! I do not have the time to spend an hour + on my eyebrows and my bikini wax, sorry, I just have way to much to do! This place is not only very fast, but highly efficient and cheap. You can call in the morning, go in at lunch, and not have to worry about anything for another 3 weeks, for around 60 bucks! I have seen both Oksana and Irene, and they are both very good. They get you in and out, quickly, and they certainly get the job done! If you are looking for the next chic hot-spot-spa, this is not your destination. However, if you are just looking to get a wax, forget about it and go on with your life, this place is the best!!! Did I mention they are virtually painless?? I agree with other reviewers in that this is the quickest brazilian wax I have ever experienced as well as the cheapest. But you get what you pay for here. I don't mind that the place is not the most up to date in decor but they double dip and reuse the stick that they use for braziian waxes. If you want a sanitary wax visit Spa Newbury, they use a new stick with each dip. It might be a little pricier but I am willing to pay an extra $30 if I can avoid catching a VD. Pros: Cheap more
