Terrific! 3/6/2004

This place is just terrific. It's a small intimate place retaining some of the look & feel of the old hardware store it used to be. Everything is ala carte but reasonable & no credit cards. The white bean soup is absolutely terrific. The broccoli rabe appetizer is just wonderful. I had a special of spinach lasagna which may have been the best I ever had. The ricotta cheese was very light yet firm. The pasta was served just perfect . The tomato sauce was superb. My wife had the ravioli in the nutmeg & butter which contined the excellent fresh ricotta. Or friends had the ravioli in the pepper sauce which was outstanding. It does take a little time because everything is made to order. You can taste the homemade preparations and every dish comes out hot. It's small and charming, with the food just outstanding. Very Highly Recommended!!! Pros: Outstanding Quality, Value, Charming more

what a gem 1/23/2004

This place was great - it is not easy to get to and is very discreet looking, but once you find it, it is well worth it! The veal tortellini with gorgonzola sauce was rich and wonderful - and at $11, an absolute bargain. Portions are perfect, not too small, not too large. My husband had the spinach ravioli in nutmeg and butter sauce - yum as well! Excellent homemade bean and garlic soup and we shared the tirimisu for dessert, which was excellent. Service is a little slow, but they cook to order and it is well worth the wait. Relax, make sure to BYOB and remember cash only! Our bill was $40 and the whole experience was excellent. Pros: inexpensive, great value, food is excellent Cons: South Philly parking more

The spinach ravioli is incredible. The veal tortellini is insanely rich and delicious. This is the most romantic restaurant in Philly. Truly a hidden gem. The minute you step in the door you feel like you are in Italy! Pros: freshly prepared food, atmosphere more

After reading the great reviews here, I took my family-- and it lived up to the hype. The atmosphere is terrific, the service friendly and the food excellent. A great change of pace from the usual center city scene. more

So Romantic! 9/26/2003

My husband and I happend upon this place and have fallen in love. It is very romantic.....a little small, but it adds to the atmosphere. We have dined there many times and each time we leave wanting more. We highly recommend this restaurant to all our friends and take many of our out of town guest there to dine. Pros: great value, BYOB, great service Cons: small, parking more

Good Food Good People 2/8/2003

Being new to the BYOB seen, I was not sure to expect from this quaint place. I was ver happy when i departed. The food was great. I would recomend all the apps. The main course was very nicley prepared. Tiramasu was great. I would recomend a Cab or a Chianti to go along with most meals. Pros: friendly, casual Cons: very small more

Wonderful! 2/7/2003

Mr. Martino's serves the kind of food you'd get at home... if your mother was an Italian gourmet cook. Wonderful food, simply yet deliciously prepared. I wish it were open 7 days a week, instead of only Thursday-Sunday. It's BYOB, which makes the reasonable prices even more reasonable, and there's a liquor store just a few blocks away. more

back in time 1/30/2003

once you make your way into the restaurant, you feel like you've entered an old time italian dining room. old authentic tables and chairs, great bread, oil with sundried tomato and red pepper, broccoli rabe that melts in your mouth....my wife had the pasta fagioli and i had chicken w/white wine and rosemary...a nice place to sit back, relax and enjoy. more

A hidden treasure! 12/20/2002

I took my wonderful lady to this quiet little spot on our 2nd date. It did not disappoint! It is dark, quiet, cozy and romantic. We both enjoyed the ambiance. The staff was friendly and attentive. I would highly recommend it. I would say to try the Italian fare and be prepared for quiet and close conversation. The only thing I didn't like was the proximity of other tables. It is small, so this is just part of the scene. Don't let this concern you, though. Go and enjoy! Don't forget BYOB!! Pros: atmosphere, romance, service Cons: close quarters more
