Great Harvest Bread

The employees are quick to take your order but radically change into a bunch of drunken lemurs for all other tasks. The girl with the short black hair looks like she is fighting a serious hangover with eyeliner from the night before and can't decide whether she wants to put her hair up, wash her hands, rub her eyes some more or throw stuff from one bench to the next. It was like watching the dark haired version of Anna Nicole Smith messed up. I continue to wait while all of the employees ignore me and the only person who asked if I had been helped was another patron. I asked about my order and the chick with the facial piercing at the front counter wearing the beanie looks at me and simply replies that my order isn't ready yet. I wait there for over 20 minutes to get ONE sandwhich with only one other person's order in front of mine. I am young so I know what it is like but I would get my butt chewed if I looked or acted anything like that in my service industry. With their right to fashionably express themselves freely in the usual Portland costume, they don't dress up so really their only task is to service the client. I curse myself every time I walk out of there with frustration from the well known horrible service. I always wonder about the owner's hiring practices and oversight of their employees. I received a gift card for my birthday and headed to the SW 2nd location for lunch today. Got a tasty half-turkey sandwich, a watery, tasteless cup of vegetable soup, an extremely crispy/buttery/salty chocolate chip cookie (yuck), a dill pickle slice, and an orange I haven't dug into yet. There was a rather long wait to order, not enough space to wait in line or wait for the food. Pleasant enough service (except for the girl who just pointed at the white board behind her when I asked what kind of soup they had). When I went to pay with my gift card, the machine wouldn't work so I have to go back and tell them to take $7.95 off the card on another day when the owner is in. Overall, it was a so-so experience. This is the closest to homemade bread you can find - and I'm not talking about ""bread machine"" homemade either. Use your imagination and picture a simpler time, when bread making was a daily event. (Maybe your mother or grandmother made loaves for the family)That's what kind of bread this is. It is pricey - around $3.00 or $3.50 a loaf. But if you're still in doubt, swing by the store where there is always a free sample of at least one or two varieties, and taste for yourself. The round, white loaf is lovely with pasta, salad or soup. The wheat makes a killer sandwich. And the cinnamon chip loaf is heavenly toasted and slathered with butter for breakfast.
