Editorial review from Citysearch 10/23/2012

The managment is always looking for the best of its original cliental. They have always looked after the best facility that provides the best for the best. Martha (the only Collopy) Gullberg that knows the business. Never would I have put this industry down. But a married name look like did. I am so sorry. Martha more

VERY VERY BAD MANAGEMENT 1/11/2009

It's really sad to say, but I agree with all the other 1 star reviews ... the management there is extremely money hungry! DO NOT SIGN any long-term contracts there. They WILL take your hard-earned money and run with it (without any remorse). You have been warned. Pros: Being around gay friendly patrons Cons: Being around non-friendly management more

New gym, new location with no client loyality! 1/6/2009

I have been a member of this gym for over 8 years and paid lots of money to have the privilege to renew at a low fixed price. I have suffered through all the staff changes, revamping the old gym, many new co-owners and now a new location with new owners. The gym was closed for over 4 months with the move to the ""new gym"" location. To which I was only compensated 2 additional months added to my membership. Then when it came time to renew I was over charged for my membership and was told I would be issued a credit to my charge card, which never happened. After many months I told them just note my membership and credit me on my next renewal. Which never happened. Pros: nothing Cons: everything more

They take YOUR money and run! 9/4/2008

This bunch of thieves closed shop and moved locations for four months in 2007 - leaving existing pre-paid members in the lurch. The existing management told everyone that they would get the time added back at the new gym, but with ""new management"" brought in they decided not to honor that agreement. So now I paid for 12 months of membership and only got 8 months of use, and they tell me that they'll do me a ""favor"" and give me credit for the 4 months THEY WERE CLOSED, but only if I purchase another 1 year membership. Of course, the new contract is at full price - can't help but wonder if they'll just close shop again in another year, or come back to me for more cash. My advice - take your money elsewhere. This These jokers charge premium prices for bottom-of-the-barrell service! Pros: Nice trainers Cons: Dishonest business practices more

When Bad People take over a good thing 6/26/2008

I cannot express how sad I was when I returned to Fitness Exchange after my long time away. I worked out there when Al (RIP) owned the gym and it was a great place to come. I never felt like I was out of place and even that I do not enjoy working out I still felt okay to be there and try. None of that attitude about not being the ""big guy"" was around. I left the gym when I moved, but came back later to find that this new umm ... lets just say it rhymes with itch had taken over and messed it up. While I found some of the same smiling faces still working there and members a lot was gone, like the WHOLE 2nd floor of the gym where the good equipment had been. When talking to friends who left the gym and even some who where still there they told me about the sudden changes the new owner made and how rude she was. Let me tell you that I even had a chance to see her be rude to another member out at the front desk. What was once a wonderful has been taken and the very soul sucked out. more

Post-script to a formerly wonderful place. 6/22/2008

This isn't your standard review, in that the facility has been defunct for some months now. I just happened upon this listing and felt I should add to the two previous reviews. For the record, I joined Fitness Exchange in August of 2001. At the time I loved going there to workout because I would leave feeling better not only due to the physical workout, but also because I was surrounded by upbeat and positive-minded members of my community. Unfortunately, one month before the owner and founder of the club, Al McLaren, sadly passed away, he sold out to Mary Ann McBee, one of his former employees. During the ensuing years, the overall feel of the club seemed stagnant, if not apathetic. Mary Ann, as mentioned by the two prior reviewers, is not exactly a ""people person"", although she does love to get her name and photo in the local gay magazines whenever possible. I'll refrain from sharing my experiences with her poor people skills, bad business knowledge, and lack of customer service. I'll simply say that the two before me sound quite familiar. Whether it's her lesbionic distaste for gay men, who can say for sure. Eventually, Mary Ann started selling off parts of the building as well as taking on more and more partners all in an effort, it would seem, to keep the business afloat despite her complete ineptitude to make a profit. In the end, the Fitness Exchange as we once knew it ceased to exist. A new club has popped up in a new location with a new name--Crew Health & Fitness. There may be a few similarities, but the days of the Fitness Exchange being ""the"" gay gym are sadly behind us. For those who of us who enjoyed the good times, I guess we should have known it was too good to last. And as for any new clients of this re-incarnated club, beware the apathy of Mary Ann. If it destroyed the Fitness Exchange, what else could it do? Cons: Out of business more

Charged for a gym that was closed!!! 5/1/2008

I dont understand the concept that being in a contract and charged for a gym that was closed for several months still applies??? WTF? This gym is a piece of work let me tell you....and the review below, that guy is right about the owner...no clue about customer service....I must say I was not being charged for a couple of months because the newly renovated gym had not opened yet due to permit issued or so they claimed...one day after 3 months of not being charged( assuming because THERE WAS NO GYM!!!) a fee appeared on my bank statement...so i called and spoke to maryann(the very busy owner)...she said they where pro rating blah blah blah...she then said to me...""theres something weird with your account, ill have to call you back""....i never get a call back of course due to her UNPROFESSIONALISM...a week later there is a one time fee of $256.80 for those months...so i call the gym and ask for maryann( she knows its me because the guy on the phone said ""oh sir that charge was for pro rating blah blah blah""...so she obviously knows it was me)...""im sorry shes busy""..ok i leave a message for her to call me back....i never get a call back...i call again that same day an hour later.....""im sorry sir shes gone for the day""...i call the next three days in a row 2-3 times a day and of course...""im sorry sir shes busy she will call you back""...BS i never get a call back and she ran with my money for those months that her gym was closed??????? now they give me this excuse that there was another gym that supposedly we could of been working out at....how was i supposed to know this??....im sure im not the only member at this gym that feels this way.....THIS GYM IS EXPENSIVE COMPARED TO OTHER GYMS THAT ARE BIGGER, OPEN 24/7, AND ARE EDUCATED AT CUSTOMER SERVICE....I SUGGEST GIVE THE BIGGER GYMS YOUR MONEY TO WORK OUT AT INSTEAD OF HELPING OUT THE LITTLE GUYS...AGAIN I MUST SAY THAT THE REVIEW BELOW ME IS 100% CORRECT...BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE. Pros: The owner writes her own reviews on her own gym....look for review ""comfortable gym"" by maryann mcbee Cons: expensive. bad customer service. they will take your money and run. more

The owner is always right? 11/15/2007

I must say after 2 years of doing business with Fitness Exchange the owner certainly showed me how much she valued my business. more

What a fun place to get in shape 1/23/2006

What a refreshing change from the big chains. No attitude, very friendly staff and great trainers. I've learned so much information that has helped me get more fit and feel better about myself. The 21 day program I'm going through right now is awesome. If you have a specific fitness goal, this is the place that can make it happen. So glad I found this gym! Pros: Great staff, Exceptional trainers, Spacious, not crowded Cons: Little hard to find more

Great Gym 7/20/2004

I've been a member of FEX for a number of years. As a neighborhood gym, it's a step above the mass-market health clubs all over town. An excellent selection of equipment and classes cover most any need. The staff is friendly and helpful and the place is always clean. I highly recommend it! Pros: convenient hours, not crowded more

Comfortable Gym 7/18/2004

Neighborhood gym with all the facilities and equipment you will ever need. Very experienced trainers and staff to help get your results. All at a very resonable rate. Pros: not crowded, good value, friendly staff more

Real Neighborhood Gym 1/19/2004

I'm always surprised when the employees greet me by name when I come in. I'll admit, it makes me feel kind of special. The club is consistantly clean and the weight areas are picked up. I hate tripping over stuff when I'm working out. There's a lot of space between equipment too. I hate feeling like people are working out right on top of me. As far as the equipment goes, I never have to wait for a treadmill and people seem to share the strength machines. I rarely have to ask to ""work in."" Most of the time, they ask me! Price-wise, I'm pretty happy. I think you get what you pay for, so I think it's a good value. Pros: Lots of space Cons: , No basketball court more

Cleanest Club in Houston 7/30/2003

The Fitness Exchange is an upscale locally owned health club which specializes in helping you achieve your fitness goals in a clean, friendly, and supportive environment. The clientele is primarily gay men and women but well behaved straights are respected and certainly welcome. You will find all of the lastest cardio and workout equipment spread out on two floors---there's acres of space! You'll find spacious and clean locker rooms with steam, sauna, and whirlpool. A variety of fitness classes and personal trainers are available. Free parking. Take it from an experienced ""gym rat""; it really doesn't get much better than this! Pros: Extended Hours, Friendly Club, Great Equipment Cons: No swimming pool more
