The opening was a family event, with owner Meg Mann's family building shelves and counters, and Emily, her eight-year old daughter, labeling the first batch of soaps. Escential, now a second-generation independent, woman-owned business, has passed from mother to daughter. Escential has grown into a bustling fragrance and skincare store in one of Portland's busiest shopping districts, a rapidly growing Internet business and a our traditional mail-order catalogue business.
