Editorial review from Citysearch 3/25/2013

So I have been seeing Cafe Pita on my favorite tv show Diners Drive-ins and Dives on Food Network. I am such a big foodie and eat out quite often. I have been dying to try their food and finally did yesterday and i was quite disappointed. When I first came in I was not sure if the restaurant was already closed or not. They need to improve on their greeting of guests. When I sat down i looked around and it seemed dark and depressing. The two guys that sat in front of the door at a table seemed like they could be the owners and weren't really friendly or smiling when i got in. I could hear them talking in their language and the way they were talking seemed angry or not happy which makes me feel uncomfortable. I did not feel any positive vibes at all. I ordered some hummos and pita which the hummos was pretty tasty but i could not believe that they brought out to me COLD PITA. I had no idea where my waiter was and waited a while for him to come around...I asked the other waitress if they normally serve their pita cold and her response is that some people like cold pita or warm pita. OMG i could not imagine anyone wanting cold bread/pita with their food. But she fixed the problem right away and brought out some warm pita bread. My plate finally came Pljeskavice which is ground beef patties mixed with flavorful spices served with lepinja bread, fresh onions and ajvar.(stuffed with mozz. cheese, mushrooms and crushed peppers) The portion was big and hot. It was tasty but nothing amazing. I ate about 20% of the sandwich and was over eating it. I wanted to get some to go boxes for my food but of course the waiter is never around. I had to ask for some from the waitress that was working on her other tables. Overall i would have to say that the food was OKAY but not worth the drive there. The service was HORRIBLE though. Maybe it was just my waiter in particular but I would not be recommending any friends or family to come here nor do i plan on coming back. I was quite disappointed with the overall experience I got. more

Great! 4/14/2011

Food: AMAZING but not all the items on the menu are available. I suggest you call to find out if they even have bread. Service: level is seasonal. You will see what I mean. You would go from ""Amazing"" to ""Oh God, not that server again"" more

Really good food 10/20/2010

I can tell you the food is authentic and very good according to how it SHOULD taste. I love the food, however their service isn't the best. Yes it's a hole in the wall place, but it's very reasonably priced so I can't complain. more

Cevap Me! 7/28/2010

This is the only Bosnian restaurant in the city of Houston and it's definitely very good. Besides the fact that Guy has visited this place, it's hands down as authentic as you can find around. Don't expect an extravagant dining ambiance. It's a hole in the wall, but if you know what to order, it can quickly become a place you go to repeatedly. To start with, the restaurant has a BYOB policy. So if you want wine or beer with your food, be sure to bring it! They can accommodate wine glasses if you need them. I usually order the Beef Bourek, one of my favorite traditional dishes. The bourek is served hot with a side of cold Kajmak, a traditional spreadable cheese. My husband usually orders the cevap sandwich, which reminds him of home. It's served with kajmak, and a helping of Ajvar, which is a pickled tomato side dish, which with the Kajmak, marry perfectly together in taste. On Saturdays, the restaurant actually roasts a whole lamb and serves it up in true Bosnian style. However, when the meat runs out, the dish is not served for the rest of the night. The place is usually packed during lunch and dinner, so make sure you either go earlier or later to be sure that you can find a table. Pros: Great authentic Bosnian Dishes Cons: Hole in the wall location more

Who knew Bosnian food was good :) 6/20/2010

We went in to Cafe Pita because it was my turn to pick a place and I saw it on the Food Netowrk and my husband wanted to just hit Subway :) Pros: Fresh and delicious Cons: Not much vegetarian more

Really Good 12/6/2009

I got the hummus and stuffed Pljeskavice and my friend got pirjan. Both were really good. Mine was best described as a Bosnian hamburger that I'd love to have again, and his lamb shank was very tender and tasty. I got a Mediterranean pizza. I saw the fresh dough being stretched out in front of me. It was pretty good, the crust had a bit too much flour though. Pros: Fresh Cons: Ambiance more

Never knew I'd like Bosnian food! 11/19/2009

lamb shank was delicious. And it was only $9 bucks. Pros: Food was excellent Cons: Small but cozy dining area! more

Wonderful HIDDEN Treasure! 3/10/2009

I loved this little cafe! It is definitely a ""Hidden"" treasure across the street from Target. I had the Gyro which was REALLY good. A lot of places make the lamb too spicy and with too much pepper...theirs was perfect. My friends purchased the cevapi sandwiches and that was just delicious! The hummus with the cevapi bread? Heaven! I only wish I could have tried the chocolate/hazelnut crepe...Lent... There is still a lot of work to be done with this little cafe. The food is great, and the service was extremely welcoming and friendly, but they do lack experience, so just as one person said about being waited on last? I can see it being an honest mistake. It's a very relaxed atmosphere, but it's a place that will take up a good 1.5-2 hrs. Enjoy it! Plus, if two cute girls walked in, what man wouldn't want to wait on them first? If you're in a hurry, call your order in, pick it up, pay for it, and eat it outside on the patio! Anyways, I didn't feel like I was being discriminated against due to my ethnicity. Just remember...we all ble ed green to them anyways... : ) GREAT FOOD! Pros: Food, Prices, Intimate, Friendly Helpful Staff Cons: If you're in a rush, don't eat here or call your order in; Need experienced wait staff to take the place to the next level more

Great authentic food! 2/18/2009

I love this place. It was such a gem to find it when I moved to Houston. I like smaller restaurants since I am from the northeast and this place offers such an intimate atmosphere. The food is great, having been to Sarajevo, the cevapi are as good as any place over there. They have off-menu items, you kind of have to know about it and ask them for it, but it is worth it. The roast lamb is outstanding (and yes, it is lamb and not a dog, I know because my family has roasted whole lambs before, so unlike the paranoid dude down there, I know what they look like). I was not too impressed by the stuffed peppers, but the rest of the menu is great. Pros: Food, friendly owners Cons: Small space so get there early more

Delicious!! 11/8/2008

I was visiting Houston for the first time on a business trip. when I go to a new town I like to go to restaurants off the beaten path. Well lucky me to stumble upon Cafe Pita. It's on a corner of an old strip mall. Having eaten Chinese and Japanese food for the past 3 days I was in the mood for something way different! When I first walked in I almost walked right out.....This place was so tiny and I felt as if I was interrupting someones family dinner. So out of awkwardness I immediately looked down and started to read the menu and was intrigued, so I decided to stick around. As I was waiting for my food I started to look around and saw the many framed reviews this tiny little establishment has racked up. Pros: delicious food Cons: small restaurant more

It's not a dog- you filty animal!!! 8/21/2008

OMG!! First of all I cannot believe that someone in their right mind would think that any restaurant in Houston would ""rottiserie"" a DOG!! you really have to be dumb to think that! Pros: great food, great prices more

Worst service in Houston 6/26/2008

This place stinks if you are not a regular or from eastern Europe. No A/C, and two foreign-speaking tables were waited on before my friend and were (we were there seated and ready to order before those two tables came in). Horrible food and service. more

Amazing restaurant 4/15/2008

The proverbial hole in the wall in all it's glory. Tucked away in a forgotten strip center but truly worth the drive. The restaurant has a decent decor and is very clean. Service can be spotty, especially at peak times but most of the staff is very nice and helpful. Pros: Amazing food and very inexpensive Cons: Inconsistent at peak times more

Good but needs some work. 3/25/2008

My family went, there were five of us on that night. We all ordered, it took a while and it was very busy. The hummus and stuff was great and all of our meals were good but they gave us substitutions for the regular sides. This would not have been as much of a problem if they had just asked us if we wanted the substitutions. My father-in-law is a fat a phobe and when they gave him fries instead of rice he freaked. more

Mixed bag 2/3/2008

Very small restaurant, so avoid peak hours! Saturday night was a madhouse! They ran out of three of the house specials (there were 3 in our party). BYOB restaurant. Pros: Great prices; interesting menu. Cons: Long waits; no busboy to clean tables/refill beverages; ran out of house specials. more
