My favorite restaurant in Houston 8/16/2011

I have tried most of the Indian restaurants in Houston and this is my favorite. I fantasize about the green sauce. It is the best. All of the sauces and chutneys are fabulous.\r If you are in a hurry for lunch there is never a wait for the buffet. \r I do understand the less than favorable reviews of the owners/staff. In the old days I used to take the nan (which comes with the buffet) out. Then one day they said I couldn't take it out and now they say I can if I pay an extra dollar. more

Little India FTW 6/15/2010

I had the opportunity to venture into little India a few days back and I did not regret a single moment of it. I have grown up around the area, but never knew where to go or what to have when I went to an Indian restaurant. Thankfully, my friend took me there and explained to me what everything was. I recommend going with the buffet; this choice will become oddly self evident when you walk into the establishment. It allows you to sample a wide variety of dishes and flavors even though you don't know what they are or how they taste. Bombay sweets offers a learning experience about Indian cuisine far beyond anything that I have ever experienced before. Besides being extremely savory and bursting with flavor, the dinner wasn't the best part of my adventure here. That role would definitely have to be filled by the wall to wall selection of sweets, hence the name. Be careful they are overly sweet and so many of them. Ask for recommendations based on your tastes or take a friend to help you decide. I will definitely return in the not so distant future! Pros: Wide Variety, Sweets, Delicious Cons: Parking more

HORRIBLE 5/31/2008

I am Indian and a south Indian at that so I know good vegetarian food. This was just the worst I have ever seen in my life. I went there twice, once for some tea and a snack and once with a friend for the buffet. The snacks ( I had the fried pepper) were extremely over-salted and served with some type of sauce that looked and tasted like it came from a chemistry lab, not a kitchen. The buffet was filled with old and stale items that tasted like rubber. The saag paneer had no paneer, and the naans were harder than rock. If you're looking for actual vegetarian food, go to balaji bhavan a little further down the street. Pros: cheap Cons: not worth any amount of money, food more

I was over charged 4/2/2008

I ordered a bunch items.. I saw the lady there press 4.99 for an item that is listed 3.99 on menu.. I told her to change it and she did.. then I was checking the receipt and she charged extra 50 cents on another item that I ordered.. make sure you check your receipt.. more

Fantastic value, delicious vegetarian Indian food 2/9/2008

My wife and I stumbled into this place with only 20 minutes to eat when we were late on our way to a downtown concert. We popped off US59 onto Hillcroft as we drove in from the Sugarland area, and looked for a fast food place. We saw this place--being vegetarians we were attracted to their name--and thought we'd pop in and see if we could grab something fast. Wow! This was dinnertime and they had a decent sized buffet for $6.99! What a value! We piled up our plates with vegetable korma (excellent!), saag panier (no doubt healthier than Gourmet India's creamy version, but still delicious), rice, dal, and a couple other curries. We didn't have time to try everything, sadly. We got one of their chips and some chutneys and sauces and the mint chutney was especially delicious--tasted different than we've had elsewhere, almost as if some herbs in it too? They had a large assortment of chutneys and sauces that we have to try. We will return soon and try the other things. Bottomline: fantastic value, good food, fast (buffet), and a big selection of all-vegetarian items. As for the comment on service, all I can say from my one visit was that this is a self-serve place. The only contact I had with the staff was when I paid my bill. That was OK with me, and they didn't ask for any tip on the credit card receipt, so how could I complain? (And the cashier was not unfriendly, though not bubbling over with friendliness either. Who cares when your tummy feels so good and you're on your way to a concert 20 minutes after arriving?). Pros: Fantastic VALUE, great for vegetarians (and others) Cons: self-serve, basic ambiance (these are OK as long as you plan on it) more

Cheap, fast, delicious vegetarian 6/28/2007

This is a quick little restaurant with a sort of ""buffet"" and a great take-out. The people aren't the friendliest (especially if you're white), but with many returns, they will remember your face and the service gets much better. This is the kind of place where you must be a regular to get their attention. Try anything with Paneer (it's a sort of soft cheese with a consistency like that of tofu), it's made fresh there and is always good. The Palak Paneer is great comfort food. Have a Samosa on the side with their chutney. Be careful, they're filling. The food is so cheap, you can buy a bunch and refrigerate it for a week. I'm a working student, and during the school year I don't have anytime to cook, so I buy $35-40 worth of food and it lasts me a week and a half (lunch and dinner). This place is a steal, so definitely be open minded to trying it. If you've never had Indian before, get the buffet and try a little bit of everything. You'll adore it. Pros: Incredible food and value. Cons: The owners are curmudgeons unless they see your face often. more

Awesome value! 6/15/2006

My husband and I absolutely LOVE this spot!! We spent several months in South India in college, and the food definitely lives up to our memories. It is consistently hot, fresh, flavorful and spicy. Best of all, we can always find something for our somewhat picky two year old (he loves the lassis) and EVERYTHING is vegetarian. Pros: I love the atmosphere and music! Cons: sometimes hard to find parking - busy strip mall! more

Very bad service 7/26/2005

I was there to take a to-go. I asked a question and there was this rude lady behind the counter, said me to wait in a very unpleasing way. I am Indian, but I have never got such bad response from any restaurant whether in USA or India. I would say do not even step in this restaurant. Cons: Worst Service ever more

Delicious! 7/16/2003

I look forward to hitting this spot for lunch! It's the best plate of vegetarian Indian cuisine (amidst simple surroundings) that a 5 dollar bill can buy!! Pros: clean, variety, inexpensive Cons: not for the trendy more
