Big, spacious, plenty of room, never gets crowded. Great bands show up here, and there's even a vegetarian resturant in a closed off section (free from smoke). The black and whi...

RUDE SERVICE & HORRIBLE TICKETING SYSTEM 1/25/2011

I went to the Black Cat this past weekend expecting to enjoy the Little Dragon concert. My friend and I drove all the way from Baltimore to DC. I purchased my tickets at ticketalternative.com two days prior to the concert. I printed out one ticket which I brought with me the night of the concert. I presented my printed ticket and ID to enter. The young man scanned my ticket twice and asked me to wait. When he returned he informed me that someone else had already used my ticket. I showed him the ticket confirmation that was sent to my email. He then accused me of being a scam artist. He was loud and EXTREMELY RUDE. As I tried to figure out the situation, he got louder and louder. Calling me a liar, a scam artist that just got caught. His behavior was completely inappropriate. What is even worst HE was the MANAGEMENT! It was a huge inconvenience. My friend and I had to return to Baltimore because she is not going to leave me in a car while she attends a concert for 3hrs. We were both out $18.00 a ticket and EXTREMELY disappointed that we missed Little Dragon. If I showed him verification that the ticket was purchased by me, isn't it obvious that the scam artist would be in the concert. How effective is a policy to show ID with the ticket when someone got in with a ticket that had my name on it? I was HIGHLY offended and embarrassed to be called a scam artist when I had ALL proof including receipt that I purchased the ticket. Not to mention I missed one of my favorite bands because of your staff's inability to check IDs when scanning tickets. Even after calling ticketalternative.com, they sided with the venue because "they are their clients". So, it doesn't matter if you purchase your tickets honestly, it doesn't matter if you have your ID AND receipt of purchase, any ole person can intercept your ticket and simply arrive before you and you're labeled a scam artist... Meanwhile some hacker is gonna get in on YOUR MONEY. more

Black Cat 3/31/2006

This is one of the better concert venues in the area. They get some very god acts here. I love when they have brit pop nights here. The music is so great and it is something you don’t hear at a normal club or concert venue. This venue is located on 14th street in DC and is one place a local should visit at least once while living here. more

The theme nights are great 1/12/2006

The Black Cat is a hip concert/dance club/restaurant all in one. They often have theme nights such as indie pop night, brit pop night, etc. which are great. The food is good as well. The neighborhood is not the greatest and there is a lack of parking. It would be much better if only in a different location. more

Great place 9/21/2005

Big, spacious, plenty of room, never gets crowded. Great bands show up here, and there's even a vegetarian resturant in a closed off section (free from smoke). The black and white tiled floors are a nice touch too. Doesn't cost much, and there's plenty of free parking! more

Every City Needs One 8/18/2005

Every city needs a Black Cat. It's a hole in the wall-ish concert venue that attracts local and regional bands playing all types of music. While shows at slightly larger venues like the 930 Club and large venues like Wolftrap or MCI can be relatively subdued, you're always guaranteed to have a good time at the Black Cat because the crowd is always psyched to be there and there to listen to the music. more

Right Music, Right Price 8/15/2005

With two stages, one featuring more major indie rock bands for an average cost of $15 and the other featuring rising stars and old stalwarts with an average cost of $10, the Black Cat has something for everyone looking to expand their musical horizons. The neighborhood location leaves a little bit to be desired, so be sure to bring a friend along and most shows are 18 and over, so even you underagers out there can catch a show here. more

Editorial
  • Local and international bands play The Black Cat nearly seven nights a week in an unpretentious atmosphere. Two performance spaces--the checkered floor Mainstage and downstairs Backstage--allow for multiple shows or events per night. Familiar names--like Camera Obscura, Diplo and Ted Leo and the Pharmaciststs--appear alongside local acts and themed DJ dance nights like 80s alt-pop and Prince versus Michael Jackson. For something low-key, patrons grab a bite in the Food for Thought Cafe or a drink in the Red Room, the establishment's no-cover bar, which features PacMan, a pinball machine, a jukebox and pool table. Other events have included vintage zombie movie screenings and performances by Girls Rock! DC.
