For everything from $1 drafts to trivia nights to pool tables to juke boxes to intriguing locals, My Brother's Place is great for whatever type of mood you might be in. Without any trimmings except bar stools, tables, and chairs, some may call this place a dive, but I prefer to call it one of my favorite places in DC.

If you're now or soon will be a DC resident and are looking to get politically involved in your local community, DC Vote is a volunteer organization fighting for Congressional representation for DC residents. My experience has been one of email listserves and occasional events, but you can get as much or as little involved as you would like. Great opportunity for people interested in learning about the District, our nation's political process, and local and national politics.

Free from the superficial trappings of the neighborhood it's located in, Pete's Diner it a no frills grill joint where you can get a full breakfast for two for under $11. Other than your standards of eggs, bacon, and pancakes for breakfast and reubens and grilled chicken sandwiches for lunch, occasionally you'll find something more exotic if it happens to tickle the chef's fancy. Weekdays, the diner fills up with Hill staffers at lunchtime and on the weekends, it fills up with locals for breakfast and lunch, but a seat is never more than a few minute wait away.

Located on the burgeoning Barracks Row in southeast DC, The Ugly Mug is a new type of DC bar with good lighting, open spaces, and classy furnishings. Be sure and bring a groups for their pitcher specials, and not any old pitcher, but glass ones to boot. With reasonable pint prices, a full bar, and decent bar food, this is a great place to sit down, have a drink, and relax with a single friend or a larger group.

With menus posted in large print across the walls, the lunch lines walk through a choose either rice or noodles, a meat or veggie topping, and a sauce. The bowls all come to around $5 or $6 despite the topping choices. Meals are ready in about 5 minutes and plenty of indoor seating makes for a great, casual lunch spot for singles, doubles, or large groups. With flavors can be a bit unpredictable at times, my experience over time with this restaurant has been overwhelmingly positive.

The restaurant's slogan (subject line of this post) is accurate most of the time, with wraps, sandwiches, salads, soups, and their city-famous sweet potato fries available with any entrée or as a side. Every day of the week, they also have a discounted blue plate special, and for the vegetarians out there, a green plate special as well. Weekends around lunch can get pretty crowded, but it's never been more than a ten minute wait for a table, and perhaps a bit longer for their outside patio.

With at least six traditional Irish beers on tap and great Irish pub food, Biddy's is a great place to meet friends for an after-work drink when you want to sit and have a conversation at a nice bar with a relaxed atmosphere. Frequented by young and old professionals, Biddy's also has a great wall of windows that looks out over Dupont Circle, providing some of the best people-watching in the city.

Any time I've been to the Velvet Lounge, I've gone just on a whim or because they're offering one of their free beer nights (check out their website for more info), the music has been good sometimes and bad sometimes. The lounge itself is dark, smoky, and can be claustrophobic, but only for the biggest of showings. Most other times, it's a great place to hang out, grab a drink or two, and maybe discover a pretty good band you never would have heard of otherwise.

Widely recognized as the best music venue in DC, the 9:30 club is just as good as you heard it was. I've seen groups from Ben Folds to Guster to Sufjan Stevens to The Decemberists there, and every intimate show (with only a few hundred guests) has been great. Downside: there's only very limited seating and the vast majority of people stand in the floor. If sitting is a big deal for you, you'll have to get there quite early and head upstairs to the balcony and enjoy the show from up there.

With two stages, one featuring more major indie rock bands for an average cost of $15 and the other featuring rising stars and old stalwarts with an average cost of $10, the Black Cat has something for everyone looking to expand their musical horizons. The neighborhood location leaves a little bit to be desired, so be sure to bring a friend along and most shows are 18 and over, so even you underagers out there can catch a show here.
