Hello Richard,
What do you consider "modern"? Are you looking for chrome and pleather or simply less ornamental lines to the furniture? Babys R Us has a bunch of stuff that isn't on the floor on their store. Likewise, many "bare wood" furniture shops have fewer "whoopdies" and fancy curly-cues, and you have the added bonus of being able to paint or stain it any color you like (most will do it for you for a small charge). You can also adapt "adult" furniture to baby's needs. Remember that crib bars should be narrow enough that you can't pass a soda can through them. Ties should be less than 4" long. Nothing flamable or "kooshie".
