As a contractor, I should have been more diligent when hiring somebody to replace my furnace. Doing business as Emerald City Heating, Mr. Alan Chambliss presented himself and his company very well and offered my wife and I a competitive estimate. He called us a week after to let us know that he had our furnace unit currently in stock and that he had a window in his schedule. He also told us that if we scheduled for that day that he could knock $300 off of his original proposal. A great deal for everyone, right?
Things got "funny" when he told my wife half-way through the project that he needed to be paid cash for us to receive the discount. Then he told my wife that he decided not to acquire permits from the county for the work he was performing. This raised loud alarms in my head when I found out that night and I investigated him further than I had previously, only to find that his contractor number is bogus and that he's not even a legal business after all!
With concerns about the work performed, we contacted AAA Heating in Kent to inspect Alan Chambliss' work and found that an additional $700 worth of repairs would have to be done to make our "new" furnace safe. As well, the humidifier Emerald City Heating installed is a used unit and the motherboard of the furnace was defective.
If you have any information about this company or Alan Chambliss personally, you can contact Bob Esparza at the Washington State Department of Labor & Industry - Fraud Investigation Unit at (206)835-1058. IF you have had work performed by this man or his company in the past two years, please provide that information to Mr. Esparza so that scam-artists like this can be driven out of the marketplace.

I asked the nice people at Molbak's in Woodinville the same question two weeks ago. The advice I got was mixed but many people seem to be pleased with their results from using the repellants with castor oil in them. Moles don't like the castor oil and it's not toxic for your soil. However, one helpful Molbak employee told us that she had spectacular results from collecting the "doggie dumplings" from her yard and inserting them into the tunnels. She said, "The moles leave because they don't like it!" My reply, "Wouldn't you, too?"
Best of luck

Hello Richard,
What do you consider "modern"? Are you looking for chrome and pleather or simply less ornamental lines to the furniture? Babys R Us has a bunch of stuff that isn't on the floor on their store. Likewise, many "bare wood" furniture shops have fewer "whoopdies" and fancy curly-cues, and you have the added bonus of being able to paint or stain it any color you like (most will do it for you for a small charge). You can also adapt "adult" furniture to baby's needs. Remember that crib bars should be narrow enough that you can't pass a soda can through them. Ties should be less than 4" long. Nothing flamable or "kooshie".

For a really good meal on a budget, check out Chows. "Chow!" on Church Street in the Castro District and "Park Chow!" on 9th Ave, right near the Strybing Arboretum in Golden Gate Park. If I was taking my children or visitors from out-of-town I think I'd use Park Chow as a lunch stop while enjoying Golden Gate Park and the amazing Arboretum there. The de Young Museum has just been re-opened also, so you've got that too.
For late night meals, I don't think you can beat "House of Gnocci" in Northbeach and follow it with a coffee and desert at the "Steps of Rome".
Don't forget "Mama's Cafe" at Columbus Park for breakfast. Be prepared for a wait and a not-so-cheap meal that will be soooooooooo worth it.

My wife and I just purchased a new Legacy through Chaplin Subaru in Bellevue. Last week we had a tire blow-out, due to driver error, and I needed to replace one of the 1,500-mile tires. Yokohama isn't selling these on the open market yet (very new tire design) and I had a terrible time tracking one down. The service people at Chaplin Subaru in Bellevue were completely UNHELPFULL and simply brushed me off when I went to their service desk looking to buy the tire. They handed me a DEX and told me to call tire places, which I'd already been doing all morning. When I asked questions about warantee, they told me "Call Yokohama". Six people standing around in the Service and Parts Department chatting with each other and nobody had the time to explain to me how the warantee worked or even how it wasn't covered by Subaru.
The manager of Les Schwab Tires in Renton took the initiative and called Yokohama directly, on my behalf, and persuaded them to release a single tire for retail sale. IF I'd recieved that sort of service from Chaplin Subaru, I'd probably be a customer for life. Instead, I don't believe I'll be giving them a second opportunity to piss me off.

The Pratt & Larson showroom, located next to Smith & Hawken, is spectacular. This is what tile wants to be when it grows up! While presented in an informal setting, the tile they choose to show is elegant, durable, and uniquely expressive. If all of my clients had the budget to afford this exceptional material, the world would be a much more beautiful place.

I was surprised by the high quality of the tile represented in this showroom. I've come to expect something "different" from discount stores and "Tile For Less" is the exception to that rule. While their prices are very low, the quality of their porcelain, glass and stone tile is far above what you would find at a chain or "big box" store.
