OK, I am probably one of the five people in this town that doesn't actually drink coffee. However, I consider myself something of a hot chocolate connoisseur, and I learned about this little gem on First Hill from a colleague back when I used to work in the neighborhood. One sip of the delicious hot chocolate (made with grated Swiss couverture, the same used in the mochas here), and I was hooked for life! The owner, Hans Riechsteiner, is a wonderful character (he also used to own the Arosa Café in Madison Valley), and his wife supplies the homemade batter for the wonderful snack waffles that gives the place its name. The small but tempting menu is rounded out with a selection of five different panini sandwiches, including a couple of vegetarian choices (my favorite, however, is the Black Forest Ham).
Oh, and as for the coffee? Well, I can't speak to that personally, but my java-loving friends whom I've introduced to this spot all say it's far superior to the McCoffee variety. You'll just have to confirm that for yourself.
