Mayuri is the best place in the Seattle area to get chaat. They also have a huge selection of hindi movies on DVD or VHS. The deli has all kinds of delicious chaat, samosas, bhel puri, pani puri as well as fresh chapati and a huge counter full of sweets. The jelebis are great. They also make cakes to order, and a few Indian desserts that I haven't found anywhere else in the area.

On 15th Video is a great independent rental store housed in a charming old firehouse. Their movies are well organized, and they have a good balance of DVDs and VHS. The staff is very knowledgeable about what they have and where it is. The store also sells new DVDs and videos as well as a few kinds of candy. Prices are comparable to other rentals, though they do charge steep late fees.

Cafe Bengodi is a cozy little italian sidewalk cafe in Pioneer Square. The menu is simple but thorough, a large variety of pasta and pizzas with wine, appetizers and salads. The service was excellent, and our food was amazing. The prices were slightly higher than I would have expected, but we got two servings out of each entree. Appetizers were also generous. We had no problem getting a table, but a party of four or more might do well to get a reservation for the weekends.

Coastal Seafood is a hoppin brunch and dinner restaurant on the quiet side of capitol hill. Weekend brunches (or blunches to the regulars) are packed, but the food is good all the time. Every three months the restaurant focuses on a different coastal cuisine. The funky art on the walls is local and generally available for purchase. There is a patio in back for the warmer months, but even the tables inside have a very light airy feel. Servings are huge, so don't over order. The wait on weekends can be long, but there are plenty of interesting shops nearby to keep you busy while you wait.

Rosebud is an excellent restaurant for brunch in Capitol Hill. They have a decent menu, with both sweet and savory options. The wait staff was extremely accommodating to our requests for slight changes due to dietary restrictions. The french toast is amazing, and our omelets were fluffy as can be. There's a gorgeous little terrace in the back, though you have to deal with very small tables back there. Since it is Capitol Hill there can be parking problems, though a number of buses stop nearby. We will certainly return to Rosebud.

Galerias is a wonderful mexican restaurant on Broadway. Their menu is innovative while still offering traditional fare for those who aren't experimental. The mole is always excellent, and there are ample choices for vegetarians. They have a huge selection of top shelf tequilas as well as delicious margaritas and sangria. The decor is crazy and unique. Weekend evenings have a live harp player. Prepare to eat a lot, the servings are large, and the chips and salsa are endless. When the weather is good you can sit outside on the sidewalk and watch Broadway pass by.

My husband and I somehow always end up at Burrito Loco when shopping at the U-Village. The restaurant is small but friendly, with a nice menu and selection of non-alcoholic drinks, plus great sangria. The dishes are delicious, not too oily or too cheezy, and very reasonably priced. They don't give you too much food, but you certainly won't leave hungry.

Urban Outfitters usually has an interesting selection of t-shirts. Granted, they are trendy, and you're likely to see someone else wearing the same shirt on Capitol Hill or in Belltown, but some are pretty funny. They also have some that you wouldn't wear to your grandmother's house. Prices are a bit higher than average, but the shirts are sized right and fit well.

The Off Center Opera is a new opera company in Seattle, started to highlight operas that don't usually get performed as well as provide performing experience for local artists. Their most recent show, Mozart's Il Re Pastore, was an excellent show! The singers were all very well versed in their parts, and the orchestra was played beautifully by Susan McDaniel. The show was very simply staged in the basement of Town Hall, which provided a lovely, intimate setting very appropriate for the show. And at $18 a ticket, this is quite a good deal for live opera. I will certainly be attending all of their future productions!

My husband and I recently too the Royal Argosy dinner cruise. We thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and the views, but the food was substandard. Their website and menu tout food from the same restaurants as the Metropolitan Grill and Elliots, but it was nowhere near as good. The food certainly wasn't bad, but it wasn't worth the price, especially since the pre-paid dinner was actually quite limited. Half of the menu items required you to pay over and above the ticket price, which I think is a pretty sleazy thing to do. The drinks were expensive and average. We did enjoy our evening, in part because we were celebrating our anniversary and were determined to have fun, but in the future we'd choose a plain old sight-seeing cruise instead of this overpriced dinner cruise. Our waiter was extremely inattentive, to the point that my husband's soup was tepid and our bill didn't arrive until the boat had already docked.
