Either Excellent or Horrible 4/5/2007

My friends and I usually attend the Happy Hour every Thursday after work. At first we had a great time. I think that was due in large part to our server. He's a skinny dude with a great smile. Every time I came in he would always say hi. He always recognized my boyfriend and I because we ALWAYS go there and we're usually disappointed if he's not our waiter because we usually have this other girl who has no business being a server. I thought it was because we were a large group and were a bit out of control sometimes. This past weekend I went with just my boyfriend and the bartender (who was a friend of a friend) had to tell her that we've been waiting at our table for like FIVE MINUTES without anyone greeting us. A minute prior, she walked past our table without saying hello. I think this would be a great place...if I never have her as my server ever again. I think would go out of my way to get someone else. Pros: atmosphere, the DJ's (Bjorn is awesome!) Cons: horrible waitress! more

BAD SERVICE WITH BAD SUSHI 2/20/2007

This place I really dont understand it. How can it get a rating of 9.1 on this website? did the owner had to bribe some people to get it. I visited this place a few times and always the samething happens really bad service with average sushi with its high prices. To my understands this place is just a hype and when the hype comes down everyone would notice that this place wasn't even that great. sushi chef was very ruthless and rice was too dry along with poor fish quality. The owner needs to get a completely new staff Pros: I dont think there is any, no wait there paper napkin was clean Cons: BAD SUSHI, WITH REALLY REALLY BAD SERVICE would not recommend more

I can't stand the service here. always slow, always ridiculous. Be careful when asking for something you ordered didn't receive they may reorder it for you instead of just getting it. I love the food and the atmosphere but wouldn't go here if my friends didn't like it so much. Pros: Good food! Cons: Non-existant service more

Cheating on Gratuity 2/12/2007

I've been a regular client to Zake for a couple years. I've always enjoyed the sushi, but the service keeps getting worse that I will no longer eat there. The last time I went, people that ordered hibachi meals were done eating before the people that ordered sushi even received their food. By the way it wasn't even a busy evening. Cheating on Gratuity 2/12/2007

I've been a regular client to Zake for a couple years. I've always enjoyed the sushi, but the service keeps getting worse that I will no longer eat there. The last time I went, people that ordered hibachi meals were done eating before the people that ordered sushi even received their food. By the way it wasn't even a busy evening. We had to request water at least four times before it was ever received. The worst comes last.... We received our check and since we had more than 8 people, our gratuity was included. I asked the waitress to take all the cash I gave her and put the difference on a credit card. When receiving it back I noticed that the gratuity that was already added was placed in my original total and another amount for the gratuity was added AGAIN!! She was trying to earn a $70 tip! I spoke with the manager and he fixed it, but never even apologized for such a huge error. Pros: Good Sushi Cons: Horrible Service more

It's obvious Zake can't handle a crowd. I went for happy hour and was pleased with both the food and service. So I decided to return on a Friday night and nearly walked out before getting a drink. I sat for 15 minutes before a waiter came to take my drink order...and he wasn't even my waiter. Then sat even longer for my actual waiter to show up. When she finally did, the first words out of her mouth were "It's not my fault." The food is good but that isn't enough for me to go back. it's probably one of the better sushi restaurants i've been to in houston, ambience-wise. very trendy, yes, but unlike any other sushi place i've been to it provides a somewhat romantic atmosphere: cloaked in darkness, candle-lit tables, small spaces to create a niche ... the loud trance/techno music on the other hand also gives it a pseudo-clubish feel, which may not be ideal to carry on a conversation. although it's pretty cool to see the dj in action in the upstairs booth, viewable from below whilst you dine. the sushi is not bad, in my opinion, it's just like any other trendy sushi restaurant. interesting martini choices, like the lychee martini and wasabi martini. great place for pre-drinking or dining before painting the town red.* Pros: ambience, great for pre-drinking Cons: parking, loud music more

Too trendy for a casual dinner 10/27/2006

This place is just down the street from my place so I decided to hop over for a quick casual dinner. It was a Thursday night, and they had a DJ spinning right when we walked it. It was very loud and very dark inside. It looks like people gather at this restaurant before hitting the clubs later. We felt very underdressed and decided to sit outside to avoid some of the clubiness. Food was ok and services was below average. We were overlooked sitting outside. Next time I come here, I'll dressed for a night out. more

Bad for Groups 10/17/2006

Went to Zake with a group of 15 friends. Service was AWFUL. Obviously the waitress decided that since they were including 18% gratuity to our tab, she was not going to work hard. She took two of our orders and then walked away. She messed up one order and blamed us for it, and because we all ordered at different times we all ate at different times. The food was good, and the bar was great, but I will never be eating (or drinking) at Zake again. Pros: Bar Menu, Sushi is ok Cons: Service, large groups are treated badly. more
