Best

I do like their new happy hour special, better price and value. great drink........ :)!!!!! more friendly service & management.......... love this place..........

Worst

The food is decent, but overpriced and the customer service is just awful. Consistently awful, I'm not talking just once or twice. Who are they hiring? Pros: Decent sushi. ...

A little better than average 1/11/2008

OK- Here is the Deal. This is good sushi with some kind of techno-japanese atmosphere. The drinks are tasty, but sometimes it seems like the music is stuck on the same three chords. Be careful not to drink too much because the repetitve boinging sounds will give you a head ache. If you want to feel like a bouncing ball, its a great place. The happy hour menu has a lot of cooked food on it, which can be nice for a change. It's ok to check out, but don't tell them Big Tex sent you ( Gotta keep my rep!) Pros: Good Service, Good Consistency, A little romantic Cons: Boingy techno music - techo is ok, but don't get too boingy more

Will not return 12/6/2007

I have been a few times and enjoyed the sushi, even though the music is extremely loud and service has been sketchy. However, after this last trip, I will never return. I ordered my first glass of wine, and as the waitress left the table after setting it down, my menu tipped it over. I was charged for it, and even the manager refused to take it off the bill. He stated that he did not care if we did not return. I don't mind paying an extra $10 for a glass of wine, but the fact that a nice restaurant will go out of its way to do this surprises me. I have never been to another restaurant that treats its customers so poorly. The icing on the cake was the fact that I explained upfront that I was allergic to shellfish... and my salmon came out with shrimp (which was not on the description of the entree on the menu). VERY disappointed! Pros: sushi Cons: service, too loud to talk more

My 2nd home 11/26/2007

No, this place is not perfect, but we always have a good time and leave satisfied. The sushi has always been fresh for me, so I don't know what others are referring to. I come at least once a week with my boyfriend, if not more with friends. The drinks are usually great and served pretty strong. The service can is usually pretty good also, but with good company, you can deal with it either way. The atmosphere is great with the remixed 80's tunes playing. Can sometimes get loud, but no big deal. The only complaint I have is it's always FREEZING cold in the dining area. I have to remember to bring a sweater. We have tried several other sushi places and we always end up back at Zake. Pros: Food, drinks Cons: temperature of dining room more

Not Great Pretty Much Sums It Up... 11/24/2007

Have been here a few times now over the span of 6 months. The first time we went, it wasn't too bad, pretty average. Decent enough to return. The next couple of visits have shown a marked decline in food quality, service, and ambiance. The management seems to be under the impression that a dj with extremely loud dance music (could not carry on a conversation) and dimmed lighting make up for poor service, mediocre food quality, and pricey but not fresh menu selections. Last time we visited, the waitress visited our table twice, did not bring any soy sauce for the sushi, and never returned to check on us or refill our very empty drinks. Two different managers walked by our table over and over again, but ignored our empty glasses and raised hands requesting service. We finally had to go to the bar and ask a very pleasant, service-oriented bartender for soy sauce and drinks, and ended up leaving her the waitress' tip. We won't be back to Zake- Blue Fish House and Kubo's are calling... Pros: Location Cons: Food, Service, Quality, Ambiance more

I've been to Zake's probably a handful of times in the last three months and each time kept getting worse. I try not to judge based off of one experience so I gave Zake's a few choices...maybe one too many. The quality of their fish was literally STINKY. I ordered some sashimi and the quality was just awful - not fresh at all. The Nabeyaki Udon tasted like it was made entirely out of soy sauce and just water. And their Kobe Burger isn't Japanese Kobe, it's American, which is NOT the same thing. You might as well say it was just Angus and that doesn't come close to Kobe. No dessert offerings. Drinks are actually better than their food. This place used to be Royal Japan until they remodeled it into something...""trendy"". Same Chinese owner. Service is ok...unattentive at times. On the weekends they appear as though they can't handle high volumes of tables. Hostesses seem a bit airheaded. Pros: Drinks, next to Bookstop Cons: bad food, bad everything more

On the weekends they appear as though they can't handle high volumes of tables. Hostesses seem a bit airheaded. And what is the deal now? Anywhere you go all the sushi chefs behind the counter aren't Japanese. Some of them aren't even Asian. Traditional sushi chefs takes many years of training, not your two months and then you're in the door. Americans. What do they know. Come here only if you know nothing about sushi or Japanese cuisine (and don't care to learn any better), and if you just want something trendy. Try the sushi place down the street that just opened up across from Flemmings. Sushi grade is definitely way better. Pros: Drinks, next to Bookstop Cons: bad food, bad everything more

Won't Return 9/30/2007

I eat nigiri sushi and sashimi exclusively, so I can only speak of that. The nigiri tasted a bit off..not as if it had gone bad, but not as fresh as my favorite place, RA. The maguro and hirame had a weird aftertaste. The ponzu sauce was lacking, as well. Probably will not return. Pros: Happy hour price and ambiance. Cons: Sushi did not taste as fresh more

Good sushi, cool atmosphere 9/16/2007

I really enjoy the modern, trendy decor of this place. It can get a bit loud on weekend nights, so it's not exactly a date place, but great to go with a group of friends. The sushi is good, not incredible, but definitely good and tasty. The drinks are pretty good, but surprisingly vary from bartender to bartender. Good place for spotting eye candy and a fun social time. You should go check it out. more

Bad sushi, awesome drinks!!!! 7/19/2007

I?ve been to Zake twice and I have not been impressed at all with the Sushi. There is just something about it, it?s missing something. The taste is not all there. I must say they do have the best drinks I have ever had. It?s a cool place to go for happy hour, but not if you really feel like having good sushi. more

Disappointing service 7/15/2007

The service was terrible. I must say I have never had a waitress look at me in the eye & with a fading voice lie about an item on the menu. I inquired about a special I read on a sign posted at the entrance ""Louisiana Roll."" The waitress said that is something not served here. A guest at our table ordered the ribeye plate which comes with choice of mashed potatos or new potatos. We overlooked and did not mention when our order was taken. Only after inquiring about the side dish did she say "" well okay what do you want with the entre"". Pros: average sushi Cons: Bad service more

This is a restaurant with wait staff whose job it is to take care of the customer. Be very explicit and clear with the wait staff as to what you will order. If you are in the mood for shushi I do not recommend this sushi restaurant. Pros: average sushi Cons: Bad service more

Hip to Houston 5/2/2007

Don't come unless you're dressed to impress and ready to spend cash. Zake is fun and lively with delectable dishes and killer drinks. I love this place- I come here to get myself ready for night out on the town. Pros: music, crowd, location, ambience Cons: getting a table on the weekends more

  • In Short
A mix of couples and sushi devotees sit at the ample bar area at the front of the restaurant. In the main dining area, cozy booths reside alongside the rowdy hibachi section. Twinkling fiber-optic lights and throbbing dance music add to the modern lounge atmosphere. Popular appetizers include the zakeviche--snapper, tuna and salmon served seviche-style--and phyllo shrimp. Signature rolls like hot damn and the Soprano enliven the varied and authentic Japanese and sushi menu offerings.
