Best

I do like their new happy hour special, better price and value. great drink........ :)!!!!! more friendly service & management.......... love this place..........

Worst

The food is decent, but overpriced and the customer service is just awful. Consistently awful, I'm not talking just once or twice. Who are they hiring? Pros: Decent sushi. ...

Long time coming!!! 8/20/2005

Finally in Houston we now have a Sushi Restaurant that can be compared to those in other large cities. Not only is the food delicious, but the ambience will sure spake your taste buds!! more

Great Time 8/9/2005

I went here with a group of people and it was great. Everyone ordered a few different items so we could all try a little bit of everything. The zakeceviche was delicious and so was the zaketartar. I really loved the Japanese pumpkin tempura and the must try calamari. We were stuffed when the sushi arrived, but we managed to down the rolls cause they were equally tasty. We all had a good time and made friends with the server. I'll probably ask for her next time I come in. It was a good experience, oh and order the martinis, most are made with fresh fruit! Pros: Drinks, Food more

Please skip this place 8/7/2005

I had dinner at this restaurant and this place is awful. The sushi is not fresh, and the service is horrible. I had friends that waited 45 minutes for sushi and upon arrival, the sushi was old and not fresh at all. We brought this to the waitresses attention and she really didn't care. We brought it the manager's attention and he didn't care either. The table next to us also experienced long waits for their food. Our check was incorrect. In short, THE WHOLE NIGHT AT ZAKE WAS A COMPLETE MESS. more

The Best! 10/22/2004

I tried all the sushi places in the area and enjoy this one the best! The sushi and the rolls are amazingly tasty, fresh and prepared quickly. I have not gotten an overripe avacado or stale cold soft shell crab in their rolls - a common experience at other places. The spider rolls are perfectly made - and are large - for only $5.50. I couldn't believe it. Other places serve puny spider rolls drowned in mayo for 8 or 9 bucks! They will cheerfully make things not on the menu too, and tell you of any special items they have. They must have cleared up the service problems. It's been consistently attentive and friendly. Pros: Comfortable, Attentive Service, Great Sushi more

Great Lunch with Family and Friends 7/31/2004

Lunch at Royal Japan Steakhouse & Sushi with family and friends was fabulous. Appetizers were fried calamari and soft shell crab. Expect the special Japanese flavored crispy skin to be different from the usual flour coating. Sushi was fresh and delicious. Their fish/rice ratio was very desirable--less rice and more fish so you would not get filled after just eating sushi. What I loved about this restaurant was their specialty rolls. Personally, I have never really liked Japanese rolls. However, with a touch of originality and delightful combination of ingredients, their specialty rolls are more than special. The volcano roll was traditional Japanese rolls covered with amazingly tasty crawfish. The caterpillar roll was adorable both taste and appearance wise. Don't miss the rolls! The children really enjoyed Hibachi. Our chef put on quite a show with his flawless control over cooking gadgets. The filet mignon was great. Pros: Delicious Food, Delicate Cuisine, Relaxing Ambience more

great food - horrible service 7/27/2004

the sushi quality rates solidly in the top 10 in town. large fresh sashimi, creative rolls, superfresh handrolls. however, the service is deplorable. ive had 3 waiters in my 3 visits. one was just too cool to be bothered with our needs, one barely spoke english and walked off while we were placing our order and the third didnt know much about sushi at all. i have noticed a woman there who seemed to be in a GM/owner position and she seemed to know the score so maybe they will be restaffing soon... a lot of folks here have commented on the ambience. in my opinion its pretty much a carbon copy of every other mid-range sushi bar you'll find. but it's fine - warm and cozy... if you aren't hung up on service, i say drop by, you wont be dissapointed in the food! Pros: handrolls, sashimi Cons: , service more

If you want good hibachi, this is a good place to go, but their real hidden treasure is the sushi and sashimi. For those who've never had such food, this is definately the place to go try, because their sushi chefs are supurb. Any amateur place can have good hibachi, but it takes masters to prepare good sashimi and good sushi and this place has those masters. Pros: Inexpensive, Sushi, Sashimi more

I had heard so many good things about this restaurant that I had to try it out for myself. I was very impressed with the food and service as well as the pricing. I have a large appetite, and the bento box was a perfect satisfaction. Pros: good food, good pricing, good everything more

Royal Japan has a great atmosphere. The sushi is prepared by an actual chef who can make things not on the menu and is not just trained to make rolls. He can make some really good specialty dishes. I recommend the Tuna Tartar, just ask him to whip up something and he will. I don't see where the other two reviews went, but we obviously didn't dine at the same place. People who can't eat food other than Hibachi and then have to complain about fried rice, dipping sauce, and meat should just order take out or stay in! Pros: good food, reasonable prices, wait staff more

AVOID! AVOID! AVOID! 12/28/2003

I had been looking forward to trying this restaurant and was very impressed by its appearance when I entered. However, our meal was the most diasterous dining experience in many years. The ginger dressing was absolutely BLAND with NO TASTE WHATSOEVER. The chef (we were at the hibachi grill) ran out of ingredients THREE TIMES and had to stop the action each time and wait on more food to be brought from the kitchen (they appear to be obsessed with overserving by even one milligram!). He then served an entree to the wrong customer and, since he could not remove the food from the person's plate, we stopped once again to wait on more shrimp to come from the kitchen. We were repeatedly told they were understaffed, but isn't that THEIR problem? Go to Tokyohana or Benihana instead! Pros: Nice design Cons: Incompetent kitchen, Incompetent cooks, Mediocre food more

  • In Short
A mix of couples and sushi devotees sit at the ample bar area at the front of the restaurant. In the main dining area, cozy booths reside alongside the rowdy hibachi section. Twinkling fiber-optic lights and throbbing dance music add to the modern lounge atmosphere. Popular appetizers include the zakeviche--snapper, tuna and salmon served seviche-style--and phyllo shrimp. Signature rolls like hot damn and the Soprano enliven the varied and authentic Japanese and sushi menu offerings.
