I won't be going back 6/7/2008

I used to really like this place but due to our poor treatment tonight my friends and I will not be going back. We arrived at 7:30pm for my husband's 40th birthday celebration. With five of us over the course of 2.5 hours we ordered 5 sakes 5 beers and 3 cocktails at which point when having to request another round three times we were sheepishly told by the waitress that we were cut off and that there was a 5 drink each limit. We hadn't had 25 drinks so we were puzzled and asked for some clarification as to why this rule was in effect since we had been to Warabi several times before and had never been cut off like this. We were then told that some guy (the bartender or the head chef) felt that too much alcohol was going to our table. I don't feel we were being any louder than any other time and since there weren't any other patrons in the restaurant I couldn't imagine it was our behavior that brought about our sanctioning. My guess is that since it was a half an hour from their 10:30pm closing time they were trying to get us out of there so they could leave early. Cons: treated poorly more

Just not the same anymore :( 4/25/2008

My boyfriend and I used to love this place and come here all the time for happy hour. Best sushi around seattle! When we noticed the name change, we decided to give them a chance. One of the rolls we ordered was a fried shrimp tempura roll. I actually witnessed them MICROWAVING it!!!! Need I possibly say any more?! I would rather eat at Sushi Land, the Mc Donalds of sushi then the horrible overpriced food I received from Warabi. Cons: bad food, owner change more

DON'T EVER GO TO THIS PLACE SUCH A RIP OFF!!!! 4/14/2008

I love going to sush places, and for the most part, I'm ok with it. But, after trying Warabi or whatever this place is called yesterday, I was very very disappointed. The food was horrible and was very expensive. The portion wasn't satisfying either. I had some of the worst sushi rolls I have had in my life. It felt like a completely waste of money. I would never go back, and I recommend nobody to try their sushi and rolls. Find some other place that are better (which is not very difficult because anywhere else would be better) Pros: fairly good service, good atmosphere Cons: below average food, little portion, overpriced. more

WARABI's now 10/10/2007

I used to goto Yamashiro every week, but it has changed to Warabi. The food is a little different but still really good. I love the rolls and nigiri especially. I dont know if its a new owner or just a new menu, either way i will returning weekly as before. Pros: fresh fish Cons: location more

So yummy and so affordable, esp. for a japanese resturant 10/10/2007

This resturant used to be a different japanese resturant that I used to go to regularly, I was so bummed when I drove by to see something totally different. I heard good things about it so I decided to give it a try. I am so glad I did! The food is so tastey, you can tell it's high quality, but without the high price. The menu is different, it is bigger, but It has most of the dishes it did before, and a lot of good looking new ones too. Pros: It only has about 15 tables not counting the bars so it can fill up fast, I might make a reservation next time. And I think it has a couple larger rooms for big parties too! Cons: Parking, and location more

NEW OWNERS - WARABI 10/2/2007

My fiance and I live just locks away from what used to be Yamashiro and loved to go often for Sushi, Saki and a fun atmosphere. Tonight we drove up and noticed the name out front changed to ""WARABI"". The inside was exactly the same and otherwise looked like Yamashiro so we gave it a shot. Apparently there are new owners and we honestly could not have been more disappointed. The fish was seriously STINKY and the presentation was nothing short of sloppy. I wish I could give this place a positive review because I loved having a great sushi place near-by, but this change of ownership ruined this restaurant. We will never go back. Save your money and drive a bit north (Edmonds) or South (Greenlake/Fremont/Seattle) for much better choices. Pros: Saki Cons: Terrible service, messy presentation, old fish more

Best selection of rolls in North Seattle 2/26/2007

My husband and I eat at Yamashiro Bistro a lot. Their fish is always very fresh and they have a huge selection of rolls to choose from. Their Rainbow Roll, Aurora Avenue Roll, and Seattle Tempura Roll are our favorites. They also have a nice bar and the decor is professional, comfortable, and simple. We've reserved their private tables for business meetings a few times and everyone enjoyed their meals. The only downside is that it's in a tiny strip mall on Aurora, but when you're inside, you'll forget the strip mall. Pros: Fresh sushi, great roll and nigiri selection, nice bar Cons: Location more

A little bit pricey.. 2/23/2007

..but definitely good quality. I was very happy to find this great little place on Aurora of all places! A friend of mine had told me about the place, but it wasn't until driving by that I recognized and remembered the name. The parking lot can be tricky as there aren't a lot of spaces, but this is definitely a fun and pleasant place to grab a bite to eat. The Kobe burger is huge, and the sushi is prepared well. We re-invented the key lime martini they serve (which is just soooo tasty!) for Valentine's this year. If you haven't been, this is a great find that you must try out in the North end. Pros: friendly service, fun laid-back atmostphere, clean! Cons: parking more

Best assortment of Ahi dishes, rolls, and friendly, genuine staff!!!! 2/20/2007

I've had nothing but the best experiences every time I walk into this little hidden oasis on Aurora Ave. The staff and owner are extremely genuine and they serve the highest quality ingredients at an affordable price. The menu is wonderfully assorted and this is my favorite spot in town for seared ahi. The ahi trio is my favorite dish! Their signature salad beats any other in town with the addition of a lovely and generous portion of ahi. Although they are bec`oming more popular and steadily gaining a loyal clientele, it is still easy to find room there during most of the week and on Sundays. Weekends, like any other good place in town, requires more patience and ideally reservations. But hey, good food takes time anywhere! Love, love, love this place! Pros: large and unique assortment of rolls, fresh ingredients, wonderful staff Cons: don't forget to make reservations on special holidays and on weekends more

Be Prepared To Wait 1/29/2007

My wife and I recently arrived at Yamashiro for our 7:45pm reservation on Saturday. The restaurant was moderately busy, yet disgruntled customers were streaming out the doors. more

Surprisingly good 12/28/2006

Good sushi on Aurora??? I would have never guessed it. The ambiance was as described, kind of night-club-ish. The sushi was fresh. Surprisingly expensive and the nigiri came in single pieces rather than in two's. As for the previous comments re: ketchup bottles. I noted that on the menu they feature a burger. Perhaps that's where the reader thought ketchup would be appropriate???. I will definitley return, but with a bigger budget. Pros: fresh, good service Cons: rather xpensive (but not outrageous) more

My repeat visits go flawlessly... 10/20/2006

My friends and I make repeated visits to Yamashiro's. I found the staff friendly, prompt and helpful. The servers are informative, and clearly familiar with the menu, and do their jobs well. We get our meals promptly and accurately (in several visits with two guests, typically - sometimes four, and on one occasion nine diners in the private room for a party). We've been as pleased with meals from the kitchen or the bar - the Kobe Beef medallions are a favorite. more

Big disappointment 9/27/2006

From other reviews I was excited to invite 6 friends to join me for dinner. We had reservations at 6pm in a private room. Most of us arrived by 5 pm for happy hour and were informed that the only place in the restaurant that we could have happy hour prices was a small area on one side already crowded. We managed to squeeze in and when the bar bill was presented--we were informed that wine was not included on happy hour. We went to our private room (good space) and our experience evolved into a three stooges movie. Most ordered halibut and 20 minutes later were informed that the halibut was sold out (6 pm), some ordered sake and were informed (10 minutes later) that the house sake was not available. We received our order after waiting 45 minutes and one person never received hers. The food/presentation was above average except for the two catsup bottles that had 1/4 inch left in each bottle. We could only laugh as the night was a comedy of errors. Most of the evening the entire restaurant/bar had only one server. Pros: good food in the north end Cons: service and items not available on menu with limited choices more

Fantastic Sushi, Japanese Fare, and ambiance to boot! 9/1/2006

This sushi bistro is awesome. Love the ambiance (modern hip, but has tatami rooms in the back for the old school in us all) and the rotating menu on the flat screen tv by the bar. Very good sashimi, rolls were great too. I've tried the Kobe steak there as well and it's pretty much heaven. Enjoyed myself entirely. Pros: Awesome everything Cons: Location in Aurora more

OK Sushi But Great Chicken 4/5/2006

As a sushi restaurant Yamashiro is average at best but the real strength here are their cooked dishes. The salt and pepper fried chicken is incredibly moist and delicious with an addictive crispy brown skin. The Kobe beef steak comes cooked to perfection (get it medium rare!) with a side of wasabi mashed potatoes and pan sauteed veggies. Other good choices include pan seared halibut, teriyaki salmon and black cod kasuzuke. When ordering sushi, stick to their vast menu of inventive and fun rolls. Pros: fried chicken, Kobe beef, sushi rolls more

Excellent sushi rolls 3/23/2006

This is a great place to share sushi with a friend, especially after work. The Happy Hour specials are a good deal, and the rolls are incredibly tasty. The stylish decor creates a clean, inviting environment that is perfect for enjoying a cocktail and watching TV on the flat screen. The plate settings & stemware are modern & trendy - but the delicious food keeps me going back for more! This is a great venue in North Seattle with scrumptious sushi. Pros: Friendly service, Great sushi, Prompt seating Cons: Dark more

decent place 2/23/2006

For Aurora, this is a decent place. My only complaints are slightly pricey menu for subpar cuts of fish. Though 90% of my meal was fine, a few pieces still had skin on them.... Pros: location Cons: quality of some fish more

Best Sushi Confirmed 12/6/2005

After reading the chain of highly recommended, I was curious as to why someone gave it a poor review. Well, I agree with the majority! The service was prompt, the staff members were friendly, and the sushi was fresh and inexpensive. Give Yamashiro a try and check it out for yourself. Pros: endless roll choices, free parking, private dining rooms more

Not so 11/4/2005

Young inexperienced waitstaff was fine; sushi chef and owner sitting at bar was not. 25 minutes at sushi bar with no service was a sign of what to expect. I've been to to a lot of these places north of the City with the same experience. Perhaps just another purveyor trying to cash in on a fad in Seattle. Save your experience for a real Janpese owned establishment. Cons: Parking, Service, Service more
