Vox Populi

I have only popped in and out of Vox recently and found that it seems to have emerged as cougarville. I think wit the growing vox-population of meat heads the cougars came fast. They do many private parties that are a blast and the place is always crowded. Vox is a great spot; Centrally located off he green line. Its for very hip spicy ladies who want to have fun and get a little loose. It is always crowded with just... beautiful people...? Tenders are great and very talented and usually at least one wins best of Boston and the drinks are deeelish. People will be surprised I'm initiating it in the cougar town lines but it is! Vox is somewhat of a hotspot for the 25+ which is a nice alternative to the younger ""frat house"" crowd at Pour House or Whiskeys. The martini menu is quite diverse and filled with top-shelf booze. The barstaff are happy to make substitutions or shake it extra vigorously if you like ice particles(like I do). I found that the martinis, however, are somewhat inconsistent; during the day I get a garnish and at night I have no chance. Overall its a fun place to go to if you're not in the mood for an Irish Pub. I find its best to start here first - before moving on to other less crowded places for the rest of your night out. Sitting at the bar is a great way to meet new people because then you can help them get the attention of the bartender and share some of your space, but only if they are worthy. Get the bar munchies? Try their french fries - it’s off the bar menu - small portion but enough to satisfy at least two people. Now for the best part, their drinks! The flirtini - I had to take a picture the first time I ordered because the color was exquisite - and just the right shade of pink. Vodka (a girl’s best friend), cranberry and pineapple juice, and a champagne float! Bring the girls (or the guys) and mix and mingle! I’ve been to Vox a few times and have only good things to say about my experiences there. \r \r The first few times I went were for parties – Vox is apparently very easy to schedule events with, because our class used to have events there each semester. They have two bars – upstairs and downstairs, and a great décor, though I guess you could argue it’s a little confusing to get to the bathrooms. It can also get cramped fast.\r \r In addition to our private parties I also attended Vox’s awesome Halloween party in 2009, which was a great time! One of the more affordable, fun Halloween parties going on that weekend. I’ve found the drinks to be good, the staff to be very professional, and the atmosphere to be a lot of fun. \r \r The bar touts their dozens of martinis, but they have a ton of drink options and I’ve ordered a few different drinks and never been disappointed.\r \r But this past week I went for the first time to actually eat something – their restaurant is running a promotion in February - if you go before 7 you get half off the entire food menu. I was pleasantly surprised with the food! I ordered the Sirloin Oscar and it was excellent, my friend had the goat cheese salad with salmon. Service was great too, with an attentive waiter and helpful staff. \r \r The atmosphere is great too, with lots of spacious booths, some TV's, and even a fireplace. Its a great place for dinner or a date, though its expensive when you aren't there during a discount time. Every time I am dragged to Vox Populi, it is against my will and usually the location of somebody else's birthday party. The bar scene on the weekends is always packed with men wearing too tight Ed Hardy shirts. Even if you ignore the scene, the bar staff is sullen at best and their cocktails are really poorly made, overly priced and way too sweet. I really don't understand why people love this bar or make it their regular spot. As for me? No thanks! I went for Restaurant Week and the food was amazing! I have been craving more of the gazapacho with crab meat. The mahi-mahi was also delicious. I went out on a limb and tried a drink with soju (which I had never heard of - I think it was called Tyku), mint and oranges. It was refreshing and a great accompaiment to my yummy meal. GIVE A RAISE TO WHOEVER MADE THAT BREAD PUDDING Great food, things need to be simplified a little bit on main courses with flavors. Portions can be a little small. Waitress' needs more charm. Had a great time Valentine""s Day! The broken heart martini with white and milk chocolate liquer and chambhord was delicious. It should be on your martini menu. The only drawback is we waited half hour for our table but the hors d'oeuvres at the bar helped pass the wait time. The wait staff (We had a waiter/server and waitress since there were four of us.) were very attentive. My husband enjoyed his oyster with the surprise cajun aioli. The lobster cake was delicious with visible claw meat coming out of the cake with a Bobby Flay-like sauce on the plate, since I have eaten at two of his restaurants, that was delicious and different then the mayonnaise sauces I usually have. The kobe beef, my husband ordered, was perfectly prepared as well as my Chilean Sea Bass. The chocolate trio was delicious. My friend was much enamored of the white chocolate creme brulee. I could have used more bread pudding but it was an acceptable serving since it was a trio, and it was a fourth course. We ate not far from the bar, but even with the bar full of patrons the noise level was much less then some Northend restaurants which we haven't returned to due to the loudness and cafeteria- like environment. I also greatly enjoyed the wine pairings that were perfect with each course. I will definitely return to this restaurant especially with it's great location in Copley. I want to try the Pumpkin Martini. I will come and bring friends. I really love this place. I have eaten here twice, the food was awesome, and we had the best waitor. Pros: Great location, great service, great food! more

I booked dinner here for my sister-in-law's bachelorette party in July and everything was fabulous. We had a private room that was beautiful, with our own personalized menus for the night. The staff both in making the reservation and once we were there were awesome. One of our waiters, Thomas, was simply the best. He was so fun and accomodating. Lastly, and most importantly, the food was great. There were 15 of us, so the odds that someone wouldn't like something were high, but everyone just raved about their meals from start to finish, and the bride-to-be loved her pistachio cheescake dessert. Highly recommended for special gatherings. The coordinator for private events, Jasmin, was a delight to work with. more

This week we visited around dinner time and ordered a specialty drink, soup and a main course. Although I was not expecting the best food in the city I was hoping for good Bar food. The specialty drinks came out and were all alcohol and no taste. The chowders were good. but were really the highlight of the dinner. My tuna came out as frozen in the center. While w my husband had a burger- not much to his linking a rodent came running out and stared at us. When we told the waitress she apologized and we asked for the bill. I had lost my appetite. The manager gave us his business card but did not offer to comp our check or any thing. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. I hope that the board of health pays them a visit . more

Ive been several times since Ive lived here. I first came with my girlfriend in November of last year. Atmosphere was great. My meal in particular wasnt though. Some kind of mushroom ravioli they dont seem to carry (I wonder why) Calamari was great BTW.\r \r Great place to grab drinks with buds during a game. Alot of good looking people there for you single folk. And you must try the clam chowder. more

First off, I went out for my birthday with some friends and was attracted to the crowd at Vox so we thought it had to be a great place. Wrong! We all ordered something different so we could sample each others dishes and needless to say that the food was completely tasteless which I can't understand how....IT'S FOOD! The booth wasn't prepared and after sitting for about ten minutes, we had to ask the waitress for menus and water because it didn't dawn on her to provide us with any type of service.....ironic huh? The drinks were okay as well as the atmosphere but nothing mind blowing. Overall, my experience wasn't great and worst of all, this was on a Friday night during ""Restaurant Week!"" Need I say more? more

The only great part of my evening at Vox is the atmosphere - I requested a quiet booth on a wednesday evening for dinner and was happy with the table, ambiance, etc. However, I came to Vox strictly for the menu options (looks great online), and my date and I both left displeased. We each ordered a mojito, a cup of soup, and an entree. The drinks were pretty good... almost worth the $12 each. My lobster bisque was tasty but was served luke-warm. My scallops were also served luke-warm, however, the veggie/rice mush in the center was piping hot. Sadly enough, the veggie/rice mush tasted similar to a frozen dinner. healthychoice's kung-pao chicken i believe.... My date's seared tuna was dry-looking and tasted like it was missing something - a sauce perhaps? All in all, not a horrible experience, but not great either. We choice to walk down newbury st. for another restaurant for dessert. \r \r I went to Vox for dinner a year or two prior and was very pleased with everything so, despite it's recent negative reviews, I hoped to give it another chance. I'm so displeased! I've been to a handful of comparably-priced restaurants in boston recently that were 10 times better than vox with the food/presentation. \r \r A good point - the waitstaff (despite bad reviews) were great that night. ....go figure.... My friends and I sat at the booths next to the bar and waited for 30 minutes to ge recognized. Our original intention was to order food and drinks. We finally decided to get up and order direct from the bar. Im from NYC, and I hoped to have Sam Adams on tap (octoberfest preferrably). Another big disappointment. As we ordered our drinks, the bartender walks away and disregards our ourder and proceeded to eat their own dinner behind the bar. Another 20 minute wait and we decided to leave unfed, thirsty,and unahppy. more

Nothing about our Sunday brunch experience at Vox was enjoyable. No hostess was present when we arrived. After a few minutes, a grumpy waiter seated us at the table nearest the door (which had a draft every time someone entered) despite the fact that there were many open tables available elsewhere. When the hostess did arrive she was inappropriately dressed in too small pants and a camisole, bra and spare tire exposed.\r \r The food was not good. We started with dry pastries served with frozen butter followed by rubbery scrambled eggs, burned pizza crust, overcooked hamburger, mushy home fries, and over salted french fries. Our waitress wasn't great but it could have been worse. \r \r While we were eating another family left before their meal was served because their service was so poor. Before they made it out the door their waiter called them back in and proceeded to argue with them right next to our table. We had no choice but to listen as the mother yelled that he had served them hot water and black coffee and not returned with tea bags and cream for 15-20 minutes. Neighboring tables had similar issues, no water or coffee refills, food served cold. By the end of the half eaten meal we were ready to get out of there but our waitress was nowhere to be found. \r \r When we first arrived I thought the place was a little empty compared to it's neighbors, by the time we left I understood why.\r Pros: No waiting Cons: Disorganized staff more

VOX has a great atmosphere!!! When we arived we were greated promply by the host, seated out bact in our own booth and subsequently greeted promptly by our waiter. A bald guy named matt was fantastic!! Personable, friendly, and funny! he brought our drinks, which were also fantastic. The clientel, bartenders, and staff were that of a Boston Hot spot!!! The Vox is attracting an interesting crowd - very young for a Back Bay restaurant. Upstairs, the service was terrible. The waiter was a bit rude and acted like we were a bother. The food was terrible. We have made our last trip to this restaurant. Our waiter recommended the steak with frites ""one of the better dishes with great sauce"" - when the meal arrived everything was cold and the steak texture was ""rubbery"" - the sauce - tasted like greece and water. The chicken dish came with all dark meat and tasted terrible. When the waiter asked how the meal was, we explained how disapointed we were etc. He then continued to ask if we wanted to take home the meal... And.. to top it off, he charged us for it. We are highly disapointed in the service and quality of our meals and we hope that as the Vox promotes and takes pride in their ""drink menus and nightlife"" - that as a Boston Back Bay restaurant, they start to take pride in their meals and the quality of their food as well. We will never recommend this restaurant until they plan to improve. more

After being moved from a very unfortunately placed table right in front of the door to a romantically cozy semi-circular booth, we were informed that the waitress in our section was slammed and not to be surprised if it took her a couple of minutes to get to us. Although it took them a few minutes to clean the table, they were very nice about out it and did not lose their professionalism for a minute. \r \r Despite being told to expect a wait for service, a very interesting basket of bread was promptly delivered. It included papdum with a sundried tomato spread, and oven warm rolls with garlic infused oil. Our drinks followed quickly after. We were given the proper amount of time to peruse the menu and then the very perky waitress took our order.\r \r Now I just recently had to go mostly vegan because of several annoying (not deadly) food allergies. I am still getting used to what's in what. So, some of the things I ordered I couldn't really eat, and the main dish I had originally wanted I had to change right before it came, but the kitchen had no problem as everything is made when ordered. It barely slowed the pace of our meal. \r \r THe food was relatively good. I think if you aren't a complete food snob you would be happy enough. Presentation was artfully delivered and well planned out. Be warned though, as it gets closer to ""night club"" hours the music takes a disconcerting turn for the worse. After having a very negative experience with a bouncer on a Saturday night at Vox, I quickly called and complained. The manager, event planner and owner all responded professionally to my complaints all separate of one another, within hours. I was very impressed with how they handled their customer service and never questioned my word against their employees. The customer was automatically right, which you don't see ofter anymore. I think VOX is a great, chill place with amazing martinis. You can always try something new and their seasonal list is always delicious. My favorite is Nina's Mango but when we go with a group we each order a different one to sample one anothers...you'll never run out of choices! You can stand or sit at circular tables on the first floor...great vibe, mixed crowd, terrific ownership customer service.
