Best

Make sure you make reservations... This place is usually crowded, so if you have kids, the wait time can go to an hour if you don't have...

Worst

Got a spinach & feta egg 'white only' omelet. They wanted to charge me a dollar more because it was egg whites only..WTF? Thank god the cook overhe...

waste of hard working money. 8/20/2006

The food was retively cheap but there was no quality in the food. Our server was very unprofessional, she complaint to us about the owner (we were there to enjoy our evening). Trying to be upscale Vietnamese restaurant in town. The ambience was not as fancy as everyone said. The retaurant was in a scary neighborhood (I don't recommend to go there after dark). Pros: cheap Cons: bad service, low quality of food, trying to be upscale more

Food is okay, ambiance keeps me coming back. 8/13/2006

This place is hidden in a corner of the Viet Hoa plaza. The food is typical vietnamese. Pho, rice plates, fried egg rolls, and spring rolls. They do offer a cool 7 course beef meal for 2 people at only $18. Can't beat that and it's worth at least one try. So if you try it, bring a big appetite. The ambiance is what keeps us coming back. It's decorated very trendy and has a cool firepit. If you sit at one of the tables that flank the firepit, beware as it gets really hot and your eyebrows and nosehairs might get singed. Will definitely revisit! The food is priced at about a dollar or two more than a typical vietnamese restaurant that serves pho and rice plates. But paying the extra dollar or two for the cool ambiance is okay by me. Pros: parking is easy in the evening; cool setting Cons: food is just okay more

Great food, Friendly service and Nice decor 7/31/2006

Tamarind tree is hidden in the back of a rather funky parking lot in the International District. This helps to keep it slightly secret. Once you make it in the door, you'll be suprised at what a beautiful place it is. Drinks are carefully crafted and include things like Ginger Cosmopolitans, Lemongrass Martinis and Tam's Mojito. Food is delicious, although I woudn't be sure that it was ""authentic"" Vietnamese, that's not important because the flavors are wonderful. I recommend the boneless fish broiled in coconut milk which comes in its own little container. Also, for appetizer the Tamarind tree rolls are great. I usually go on a Monday night because if you go on the weekend, you'll be waiting for a table. Pros: Tasty, different, obscure location Cons: Parking more

Best Vietnamese in town 7/24/2006

I eat here almost every week, so needless to day, I am a huge fan. The menu is extensive and consists of many provincial/traditional Vietnamese dishes. (I was born in Vietnam.) The appetizer selection is great, especially the tasty spring rolls and green papaya salad. The entrees are solid, try the noodle bowls, crepes, or seven courses of beef (which is a lot of food!). The cocktails list is varied too, lots of options for martinis and cosmopolitans. The restaurant decor and atmosphere is nice and upscale; food presentation is very pretty; but the service is average. Tamarind Tree is popular every single night of the week and the place is packed! As such, the wait staff rushes from one table to the next. Despite this one shortcoming, I would highly recommend Tamarind Tree for those looking for a charming Vietnamese restaurant with tasty food, unbeatable prices, and low-key ambience. Very fun for large crowds, but be prepared to wait about 20 minutes for your table. Pros: Excellent food, unbeatable prices! Cons: Service is average more

great, casual place in the ID 7/21/2006

The Tamarind Tree is a wonderful place in the ID for Vietnamese food. The menu has a ton of interesting things to choose from and the flavors are incredible. Parking is terrible and you may have to wait but it's worth it! Pros: food Cons: parking more

Great food, atmosphere, value 7/19/2006

We recently had a party of six at the Tamarind Tree and had a wonderful time. We sat outside by the waterfall. We ordered family style with plenty of dishes to share and very reasonable prices. I would definitely go back. The decor inside is very chic and even the sinks in the restrooms were cool. Thumbs up for this little ID hideaway! Pros: great food for the price Cons: they don't take reservations after 6pm more

Very good vietnamese food 7/9/2006

Tamarind Tree has really good Vietnamese food. It's also very vegetarian friendy, one of the few Vietnamese restaurants that provides vegetarian (no fish sauce) sauces. Pros: Tamarind Tree Rolls, Cocktails Cons: Too busy now. more

Not authentic! 6/7/2006

All the good reviews about Tamarind Tree are SHOCKING! First of all, it's located in this weird ally... be careful of beggars and thieves. Lock your car doors! Next, the food is extremely overpriced for Vietnamese cuisine. You can go to a lot of places in (and out) of Chinatown where you can get the same stuff for less than $5. The food is not even good here. My porkchops were dried and flavorless, and the portions are small. It's not authentic at all--you just think it is because it's ""different."" But like I said, there are good, authentic Vietnamese places out there that are cheaper. Oh, and the wait staff? It takes forever to get their attention, and when you do, they rush you. The only good thing about it is that it has a really nice, classy atmosphere. Oh, and the fact that they have a bar is good too. You can get drunk and forget about how bad the food is. The bottom line is, if you've had Vietnamese food before, you will be disappointed by Tamarind Tree. Pros: Nice atmosphere Cons: The food more

Great Cocktails! 5/5/2006

This stylish, cozy restaurant portrays a festive environment with fresh asian-inspired decor. The waterfall and candles on the patio create a soothing ambiance for chatting over drinks -- drinks that are great! I highly recommend the Tamarintini, for those who prefer a stronger, not watered-down cocktail. The food is pretty good and adventurous, and the service is ok. It's a little busy on weeknights, and my food was a little cold when I got it, but our server was really busy. But this is a nice place to enjoy some dellicious drinks and satisfying food. Pros: Great drinks, Good value, Parking more
