If you go on a free haircut Monday, ask for Stacia. She cut my hair today and absolutely NAILED IT! she gave me exactly what I asked for only better, I have bangs with long layere...

Worst

I was hoping to get a great cut here but it was the 2nd worst haircut in my life. My bangs are much too short, much shorter than what I asked for. My hair is cut in a way that it ...

Stylists may have some vision or memory problems? 9/23/2006

I even brought a photo and showed it to my stylist, but he just said ""okay"" and turned out to be just different. Okay, it doesn't have to be exactly the same. But doesn't he have to remember at least what I showed less than 5 minutes ago? I wonder what he was thinking while doing my hair. Probably nothing. My hair turned out to be just different from what I showed. And worse, he didn't even style my hair after shampoo because he already started working on other client. Just said ""Oh, it's pretty, this style SHOULD be good as it is."" IT WAS NOT! And I had to go home asap to shower and style my poor hair by myself. If he has no idea what he was working on, don't pretend to be professional. Its atmosphere might be cute, but it doesn't mean that person works for there has the same taste or even has the normal professionalism. Pros: building? Cons: PEOPLE more

bad experience with front desk staff sine qua non salon 8/26/2006

My experience with this salon is so and so. This review apply at lakeview and lincoln park. My experience in the lakeview area was ok, I liked the hairstylist but the front desk staff did not offer if I wanted something to drink, but people who went in after me was asked if they wanted something. So that was not very impressive. I decided to try the lincoln park locations, same experience with the front desk. It was very hot when I came in and it was also hot inside, but they did not offer if I wanted something to drink, and people who came after me was offered something. My hair cut was ok, but I liked the color. For me the front desk staff need to be more customer service oriented, first impression was bad. I decided not to go to this salon anymore. Pros: good hairstylist Cons: bad front desk staff more

Great Mens Cut 8/12/2006

You hear horor stories about how some salons treat guys as second-class citizens. I decided to try this salon based on the other recommendations on this site. I was welcomed as I walked in the door, and given a much-needed glass of water (and refill). The receptionist was very nice and engaged in conversation with me. Kimberly (on time) gave me a great cut at a price that won't break your back compared to other salons in the city. I will be going back. more

Great Salon 7/28/2006

Okay, here's the deal. I was just cruising my favorite spots on the web when I came across a couple bad reviews of Sine (BTW, that's what the cool kids are calling it these days). Alright, I can accept a few people that aren't pleased with their service; it's not a science, it's an art, people. I ALWAYS take bad reviews with a grain of salt and see them as isolated incidents. Anyone and his grandfather can post a review on this website and who's to say that they aren't jealous competitors (or, in a positive case, employees)? The fact that no one seems to remember the name of the person that ""ruined"" their hair seems suspect. Beside that point, I have been going to SQN for 3 years and despite the fact that I have no complaints, I know for a fact that if I did, it would be taken care of promptly and without attitude. I, personally, allow my stylist, Ken, to do what he feels is appropriate and I know that if I am not happy with it, for whatever reason, he will make himself available at any time to ammend the situation. I could not be happier. One caviat, however: the name ""Sine Qua Non"" makes them sound a lot more snobby than they actually are. You will not find the stereotypical ""DIVA"" here. If that's what you want, go back downtown. Pros: Friendly, reasonable pricing Cons: hard to get appointments around my schedule more

best haircut ever 7/27/2006

I have been going to this place for a few years and am always calling last minute for an appointment. because of this i have often had to go with someone new to cut my hair. I have gone to Sam, Susan, and Sheba and they have consistently given me an awesome cut. being a rather hip place i am always impressed with the lack of pretension the employees have, from the friendly reception to the stylists themselves. I hate to give a good review as i don't want it to be any harder to make an appointment! But it's the truth, this place is top notch! more

Finally found a great salon!! 7/24/2006

Let me just say that i have been to a great number of salons in Chicago, and i feel that finally i got exactly what i wanted without having to explain it to death! Not only did i get the highlights that no other salon has been able to accomplish in three years, but my cut turned out great too! I get compliments all the time, and i actually like doing my hair in the morning. The whole atmosphere of the salon is hip, fresh, and relaxed, and i am a devoted new client of Sine Qua Non! more

Ugh..... 7/20/2006

I'm pretty disappointed with my experience at Sine Qua Non. After I read so many positive reviews, I felt pretty comfortable going there, but still wanted to play it safe and get a trim only since I have just finished growing my hair out from a nightmare haircut (oh put layers in your hair) experience. I explained this when I went in and the stylist said he would freshen it up only. When I left I had more layers than the awful haircut I had before. My hair is impossible to work with now and is a million different lengths. The stylist was a super nice guy, but absolutely didn't listen to me. I am so upset about my hair. I will not be back. more

Biggest waste of 90$ 7/12/2006

I'm new to Chicago and I have curly hair. I'd just had a cut at another salon, which didn't turn out very nice at all so I decided to try another salon for colour. I chose to go to Sine Qua Non after reading reviews. I must admit I was 30 minutes late for the appointment as I had mixed up the time (I'm pregnant and I get brain freezes!), but the stylist I was scheduled with said it was no problem. He recommended a demi-permanent colour, which I had had before since it's better for curly hair and it had turned out very nice. I had highlights and grey hair that I wanted covered, and he said that the demi-permanent colour would blend everything in. \r I didn't see my colour until I got home because the stylist wasn't able to style my hair! I looked as if I had put my fingers up an electrical plug! He sais next time, to go see another stylist as he wasn't good with curly hair, then charged me the full price anyway! When I got to see the colour, it was much darker than what we had discussed. But after each shampoo (and I only shampoo every 3-4 days), it statred fading so much that my grey hair and blonde highlights satrted showing through after only 3 weeks. It's been 5 weeks now and I look as if I never had a colour done. more

Great for Curly Girls 6/5/2006

I got my hair cut by Amie a couple of weeks ago, and she did a fantastic job. I'm always nervous having my curly hair cut by someone new, but she did a great job, and she really knows curls. I'll definitely get my hair cut by her again. Pros: Great hair cut, Nice staff Cons: Parking more

My hair never felt healthier! 4/7/2006

I always love the cuts I recieve from Sine Qua Non, however, I was pleasantly surprised by the conditioning treatment. when i booked my appointment, the receptionist asked if i'd like to add on an extra treatment and i said ""ok"" without really knowing what it was. well, my formerly dry and brittle hair feels dramatically softer and less damaged (i'm a color junkie). i would recommend it for anyone with dry or chemically treated hair. i hear they have one for scalp issues too. it's only 7 bucks and totally worth it. Pros: relaxing yet fun, good music, pleasant staff Cons: sometimes bad tunes more

thank god for amie! 4/4/2006

after a slew of bad haircuts and mishapen curls, i've found my coiffeuse: amie reda. she listended and understood my hair problems because she has curly hair! she's cute, fun and has great style, which instantly made me trust her opinion. i would recommend amie to anyone who's reluctant to try something new because she will not disappoint you! Pros: fun atmosphere, great music, friendly staff Cons: parking more

Brilliant salon 2/18/2006

I've been getting my hair cut and colored at Sine for almost 8 years now & I have NEVER, not once, had a less than pefect doo. I trust Laura so much, that I just let her work her magic without much direction (but for a few personal basics, e.g. no mullets). Hilda gives the best ever wash and scalp massage & is sweet as pie. Jennifer is the soothing godess of the salon, giving great massages & amazing microdermabrasion. Friendly staff, great music (mostly) & Bumble & Bumble!! more

i've found my salon solemate 11/14/2005

i had a great time at sine qua non. i've been there 2 times now and have recieved the best wash/scalp massage from hilda and amie--so relaxing that i nearly fall asleep! trisha is a great stylist and always listens attentively to what i envision and then makes my hair dreams come to life! everyone there is so cheerful and happy! i'm glad i found this salon! Pros: super friendly staff, good music, great service Cons: meter parking more

Terrible Staff 11/13/2005

The staff at the front desk didn't even take notice of me when I walked in for my appointment. My hairdresser was 10 minutes late. He rude and snobby and looked down upon me when I told him I was just a student. Pros: rude snobby staff, uncomfortable sinks Cons: nice interiors, good products more

A fun, funky salon 11/11/2005

An offbeat salon that still manages to cater to the Lincoln Park set, you can go to Sine Qua either to get the typical long layers with highlights or to get something totally funky. You do need to tell the stylists if you want to go funkier, but they can certainly do it. Holly is my stylist, and she's wicked with the razor cuts and doesn't push products on me. I'd be fine with it if she did, though--the place stocks a full selection of Bumble and Bumble. Bang trims are free between visits for regulars, and it's not too far from the Brown Line. more

Friendlier greeters please! 11/7/2005

I was really impressed with the reviews for this salon so I decided to check it out. The atmosphere is ok but I had to wait for 15 minutes until my stylist was finally ready for me. This wouldn't have been a problem but the blonde receptionist was so rude to me when I asked her how much longer I'd be waiting. Also, I watched as she offered everyone but me a beverage. Not that I really need a beverage but I was sitting there for 15 minutes! I was also confused because the rest of the staff seemed friendly and stylish but this receptionist was wearing a monkey t-shirt with some ""witty"" phrase on it. Bleh. My stylist was great and i like my cut but my first 15 minutes at the salon really turned me off. Pros: nice salon, good cut, easy parking Cons: rudish, busy more

Sonia is fabulous 10/12/2005

I never know what to do with my hair. I need a stylist who will listen to my concerns, evaluate my features, hair texture and lifestyle and create a style for me. Sonia did just that. She wove together several colors to give me a natural hair color, perfect for my skin tone. She gave me a carefree haircut that looks as fresh after four weeks as the day it was cut. The best thing though is that Sonia created a style that is uniquely my own with a hair color that accentuates the texture of the style. Pros: cozy salon, trendy, friendly staff more

NYer relocated to Midwest 10/4/2005

Sine Qua Non is a godsend to Chicago. I moved to the midwest several years ago, and got several BAD hair cuts/color. And then it happened, I found Holly Emling, not only is she super cool, but she has great taste in music. I have brought many friends to SQN and everyone has always been pleased. And I think my hair look better than in the NY days! Pros: affordable, staff is well trained, great atmosphere more

i'm first 9/29/2005

i always feel like a million dollars when i leave sine qua non. after learning how to pronounce it (thanks front desk gals!) i was able to refer several of my friends and a couple of girls in the desk pool. sine once again returned the favor. my reward? awesome hair and for referring some friends (as if it was hard after they saw the fantastic job that trisha did!) i recieved a free facial! while they are extremely busy, if i have to leave a message in order to book an appointment, i am always called back promptly. go sine, you rock my world! p.s. jennifer does an AWESOME facial. Pros: great atmosphere, worth every penny, outstanding skill more

Need Better Appointment Setters/Receptionists 9/13/2005

I've been a client for a few years, but recently I discovered I get voicemail basically every time I call. Its really annoying. Their message says, ""We're busy helping clients or closed."" What are your hours? When should I call back? I am one of your clients, you should be busy with me. Its a little stuck up, but my stylist is very nice and I keep going back for her. I'd move salons if she left. Pros: Not too Pricey, No hard sales, Good products Cons: Snobby, Not customer focused, Loud music more
