Make sure to schedule plenty of time to enjoy the meal. It's so great to see a local chef do so well and still working in the kitchen and walking the room. more

Fabulous 8/20/2010

I have been here for dinner a few times and on several ocassions have sat at the bar for a light meal. The food is always outstanding and they have some of the best bartenders in the city. By the way, the eggplant fries are great, but somtimes they have to be skipped because one needs room for dessert. more

fun presentation 6/25/2010

our second time there the host checked my beau's coat (we thought it was in a coat check secured) and turns out it was put up on a rack in the hallway near the restrooms. He went to get it and it was gone, car keys and all. Well the owner was there, he was mortified and paid for a locksmith, new keys and gave us a gift card, he was so nice and was willing to replace the coat. Due to his chivalry, i will return Pros: the drinks are interesting and food too Cons: well my beau's coat was stolen there more

Little bites of deliciousness 4/12/2010

Poppy is such a different dining experience from anything I have experienced before. They serve food in thali?s, which are small amounts of a variety of foods that pair together well. You get a big plate of an assortment of dishes. I swear, every time I go there the next dish tastes better than the one before it. How can things always be getting better? Is there no end to the deliciousness? I recommend having a reservation as they tend to be busy, but if you just stop by you can hang out at the bar and eat there. If so, I highly recommend the eggplant fries with honey! They have a great drink menu and the bar tenders are by far some of the nicest and most helpful I have ever met. They totally want to help you pick out the perfect drink and I so appreciate that. Some of my favorite dishes from New Years Even dinner there: Dungeness crab, avocado and shiso salad; BC scallops on sunchoke with Buddha?s Hand and taggia olives; mashed cauliflower with sumac and sesame; and the swiss chard gratin. This was not all that came on the thali, but they were my favorites of the night. Pros: Lots of tastes in one meal! Knowledgeable staff. more

Very Nice Evening 1/11/2010

We had a delightful evening, with a delicious array of unique foods. Service was very good and everything was prepared perfectly. We will return. Pros: Very Creative Cons: Parking is expensive more

Try it once 6/26/2009

Overall the experience was a strong middle ""B"". The menu offered many new flavor combos, which makes this a great place to try once. This is, however, a fusion restaurant, NOT INDIAN, as advertised. Don't go expecting Indian fare. The eggplant fries were great. The wait staff was friendly & professional. The prices were high. Pros: Bold Flavor Combination Cons: Too Trendy more

Absolute Perfection 5/22/2009

I am very critical,& this was one of the best dinners i've ever had.Thali for a long weekend-first hot crispy eggplant fries & excellent margarita. Then a very filling and generous thali with perfectly cooked duck breast & copper river salmon. The many pickles, vegetables, & soup were exciting and delicious.Fiddleheads with chile, parsley walnut soup, asparagus salad, cauliflower gratin,etc..etc... Flavors I will never forget, balanced and thrilling. Too full for dessert, so I'm going back soon to try the tempting warm date cake and house made ice creams.Very good prices, very good service, very nice evening! Pros: Food bliss/awesome veggie options/Quality bartender Cons: not a single con more

A Wonderful Melody of Small Bites 3/23/2009

I have been to Poppy many times and have continually been thrilled with the food and the ambiance - In fact, it is my new favorite Seattle Restaurant. Yes, the portions are quite small, however I have found the tastes to be so robust that I have never wanted more than what was served. I am always impressed with the incredible gastronomic pairings - a bit of one dish enjoyed at the same time as another creates quite a party in the mouth! I am also in love with their gewurztraminer grape juice, a delicious way to enjoy a glass of vino without the zip. Pros: Ambiance, portions, variety, price Cons: Parking more

Everything was the same color 3/13/2009

I recently took my partner here for his birthday with friends. We, too, were fans of the Herbfarm, but our Poppy experience seemed flat for us. When our thalis arrived it was confusing as to which each portion was relative to the menu description. The food was all about the same color and the portions were tiny. The best part of the meal was the teeny serving of soup. I also thought that the idea of having one menu clipped to a board at the table for 4 people to share at the same time seemed odd. I loved the interior and what they had done with the space, but expected something more impactful for food. I don't know if any of us would return as we were overall disappointed -- but not with our waiter who was great. We are hoping that the chef/owner can modify Poppy's menu from what was initially a novel idea to be more inclusive of people that maybe just want one main course. more

Am i enjoying my thali experience? 2/14/2009

No! And i'm even more annoyed that this place has an ego big enough to send a waitress over to our table to ask that question. Look, this place feels inviting. It's a fun, modern, low-key atmosphere that sets you up for an enjoyable evening. The question is, at what point in your meal do you see through all the fiction and realize that you're paying $80 for a meal for two (w/out drinks!), and your food was mediocre at best. Big thali plate for $30, small for $20+. The short rib was all fat, and was supposed to be the ""main dish"". It was two bites. The small sides were bland, and i spent about 3 minutes thinking the concept of having many plates was interesting before i realized that none of them tasted good. I'm from New York City, and to some people that might mean i'm a food snob. But i'm not. I'm simply a value guy. Because i can get GREAT food for reasonable prices, with the option of having exceptional food at high prices. Poppy is poor food at an unfair price. more

ditto on the other reviews 1/25/2009

the food is good but not worth the price. the highlight of the meal was probably the ""eggplant fries"" appetizer with honey. wonderful. the thali itself was good, the large plate had a large amount of food but still quite pricey and the flavors were decent but not over the top. i have a hard time remembering anything specific. i LOVE indian food and also generally love indian fusion but this did not stand out for me as excellent. on the plus side, service was attentive, the space is fun and festive and seems like a good venue for both a bigger group and an intimate dinner for 2. more

Good, but not Great Food. Worth trying once. 1/4/2009

As fans of the Herbfarm, we were eager to try Chef Traunfeld's new restaurant Poppy. Getting a reservation a week in advance was surprisingly easy (via the web site). Parking was not so easy. The staff was extremely attentive and knowledgeable about the food. However, the food itself was average to good. The starters (quite small) were delicious and the first few items of the thali (Green Gumbo, Mashed Cauliflower, Black-Eyed Peas) knocked our socks off. As we progressed through the thail, we were disappointed. The salads (Endive & Celery) were bland. The short rib and stuffed onion were OK. The bread was tasteless. We added the wine flight to our dinner and the pours were quite small. For dessert, we tried the lemon frozen yogurt which was good but not something I'd crave again. Pros: good service, delicious appetizers Cons: parking, some bland items on thali, not romantic ambience more

Wonderful thali, skip the dessert 12/26/2008

My wife and I recently visited Poppy because we are huge fans of The Herbfarm. The thali and appetizers were absolutely lovely, but the evening ended a selection of bland and uncreative desserts that we normally wouldn't expect from a restaurant owned by Jerry T. Although I do not recommend the dessert course, the thali is a delicious experience not to be missed. Thank you, Jerry for bringing culinary life to Broadway on Capitol Hill. Pros: Attentive service, great ambience Cons: Tasteless desserts more

Great Birthday Celebration 12/13/2008

I would reccomend this place to anyone that wants upscale restraunt cuisine at a quarter of the price. What keeps the price down, probably the modern- cafateria like ikeish atmosphere and cheep utencils (definetly ikea). While still more expencive then the typical capital hill eateries (Fixed $32 plate or $22) + appitizers and then Drinks-- the food is amazing and you get to try a ton. The fixed plate is a circular tray that has 5-10 different meals (changes weekly)- we had Quail, Shrimp & Scallops, Potatoes, 2 types of salad, etc... etc...Also- you can just go get drinks & appitizers (the Zuchini Fries are AMAZING!!!) Pros: Tasting Menue experience Cons: A bit slow on the service more

Poppy - short on ambiance and taste while delivering an overpriced meal 12/11/2008

We went to Poppy to celebrate a birthday with some friends, and were sorely disappointed by the food. While the concept of small taste-sized dishes is fun, the dishes themselves were bland and ordinary. The menu is limited - either a single entree item for $22, or a combination plate for $32 (per person). With drinks, expect a party of 4 to spend almost $200 with tip. Pros: Location Cons: Bland Food, High Cost, Poor Ambiance more

Lovely Restaurant, Shame the Food 12/3/2008

We were very excited to try Traunfeld's food and terribly disappointed. The setting and service were all great, but in the end, we go to restaurants for the food experience and frankly, it was awful!! There were only two choices for dinner, vegetarian or not. There was no harmony among the dishes and they made no sense to be served together and they tasted like they were prepared the previous day and just heated. Even the wine list was a mixed up and limited collection. In a city with culinary talent such as Scott Staples, Maria Hines or John Sundstrom, Mr. Traunfeld needs to up his game to be taken seriously. Pros: Nice Setting. Nice Service Cons: TERRIBLE FOOD!!!! more

Never Again 12/3/2008

I find it hard to believe that in the minute I arrived after my Asian friends that a table suddenly opened up. We spent the first few minutes of our evening talking about that... not a good start. The ""bartender"" brought our drinks to the table and split before asking whether I would like a drink too. 10 minutes after ordering another drink we had to track down our waitress, who we only saw maybe 3 times all evening, to see what had happened. Finally the drink came in a glass that was cracked from one side to the other. I was wondering if anyone was paying attention to their job. The kitchen did. The food was good, but I just can't get over how poor of an experience everything else was. The service was so poor for such a hyped restaurant and chef. I see no reason at all to go back. There are so many other great places to go and have the staff participate in my dining experience. Very very disappointing service. more

Great cafeteria 12/1/2008

The food here isn't terrible and sometimes quite good. But the cafeteria ambiance -- very noisy, tables close together (there's no ignoring your neighbors here) and overhead lights above every table -- makes it so unappealing, that the food would have to be sensational to make this place worthwhile. It isn't. While there were some standouts, the main entree -- quail -- was overcooked. One of the salads was chopped raw cauliflower. Many of these dishes you could prepare at home. Pros: interesting idea, good cocktails Cons: ambience, inconsistent food more
