My hair looks as beautiful as any painting hanging in the museums of New York. Janet is a true artist when it comes to highlights. \r \r I initially stumbled on her and the salon earlier this year while in New York for business. I had been desperately trying to get out of the highlight cycle and stopped in to ask if someone at the salon might be able help. I found that I had been talking to Janet herself! \r \r Even as my highlights from my first visit grew out my hair looked more beautiful than it ever has. After my most recent visit, I am convinced that if Janet put her work on a canvas it would hang in a museum.\r \r The staff at the salon is particularly helpful. She surrounds herself with very talented practitioners. This time Robert served as her assistant. He was a joy to work with and did a great job blowing out my hair at the end of my visit. \r \r Seriously, if you find yourself in a crisis over your hair color and highlights, whether by subway, train or plane get yourself to Janet's parlor! I went to Janet's for my wedding updo, and she is my hero! Every hair stylist I've gone to has commented about about my hair's unusual texture--thick, heavy, long, resilient, and glossy/slippery. Nice hair, but very difficult for an updo. In the past, I've gone to many reputable high-end salons in NYC whenever I needed an updo for a special event. The outcome was always a tightly pulled back bun with many many pins to try and hold the look in place. Ouch, and not particularly interesting. Janet was creative (and patient) in the design of the updo (better than anything I've seen in magazines) and how she used the pins. I was so impressed with her skills and the genuine care she took to helping me look my best on my wedding day. Thank you, Janet! I left (not looking like a made-up doll which is what usually happens) but rather me plus plus. I didn't know I could look so good. It was really a transformation. At the wedding, I received almost more comments about my hair than my wedding dress! I'll definitely be coming back!\r \r Pros: Thumbs Up!! Cons: Not One!!!! more

I have had my hair done all over the city, and it has always come out nice. I've always got nice blonde highlights and a pretty hair cut. I never really believed you could get ""Perfect"" hair. Then I saw Karen and Veronica at Janet Rufin's Parlor! I am never going anywhere else. My previous hair colors always looked a little too ""highlighted"" and ""bleachy"". My hair cut was always ""bland"" and ""average"". I always thought that was all I could get without spending a fortune, now I know better. I now have beautiful, perfectly colored blonde highlights, and a hair cut that bounces and swings. This whole transformation to perfection cost me just under $300, which is less than I was paying for average hair. These girls are worth every penny and more. Make an appointment with these two now!! \r I had long dense dark hair and was tired of being suffocated by the summer heat. Decided to do a search on the web, hoping to find a good stylist verses the bootleg one I?ve been going to in Chinatown. I found this site like you the reader, read comments and was convinced Janet was that ?raising star? When I arrived I met Janet very down to earth individual who listened to what I wanted and assured me that the picture I had brought would complement my features. \r \r She started snipping and I wasn?t nervous about losing three inches because I honestly believed she knew what she was doing. After twenty minutes I noticed Janet has no technique. She?s not very confident with the scissors as the China man I?ve known for years. I sensed her nervousness and I started to fidget, her conversations started to become more personal guess she was trying to compensate. I started wondering where this hair cut was going because it did not resemble the pix. I left with a blunt hair cut I could have gotten from a barber shop, or a novice who finished a course on haircut 101.\r \r Once the cut was done I was hoping that blow-drying would give it volume and texture, I have so much hair it was definitely possible. She started the blow-drying soon enough she called one of her employees to do the task. She chooses to clean the empty parlor and answer calls. The young chap had no clue how to hold the dryer he would aim the nozzle at himself, feeling the hot dry heat at his eyes and lips.\r \r At first I thought my expectations were too high, but then I realized I pay MY China man $40 and I paid her $140? If I?d been given the option to pay her what I believe was hard earned it would be $30. \r \r Makes me wonder if any of these comments are real.\r Pros: Very down to earth Cons: Pricey more

I have been going to Loren for several years and my color always looks rich and shiny. I am a swimming coach on Long Island and I swim four days a week.The Bathing cap I wear doesn't prevent the chlorine water from getting in and it takes a toll on my hair. When I sit in Lorens chair not only does she touch up my roots she puts a gloss on the ends which adds rich tones and lots of shine. Loren completely corrects all the damage the chlorine does to my hair. She is a life saver, Thank you Loren!!!! Pros: Great location. the best colorist more

I decided to splurge on a haircut and they booked me with Janet. I was very clear on what I wanted, and brought pictures, etc., but Janet just did what she wanted and I HATE my haircut. I'm in a wedding next weekend and my hair looks terrible. The cut took twice as long as necessary, too, because since Janet's the owner she had to keep stopping to deal with phone calls and questions from her employees. It's insulting to keep having your stylist throw down her scissors to give her attention elsewhere. Right as she was finishing my cut she decided she had to take three employees in the back to bawl them out for bad behavior. I had to just assume we were finished, as I didn't get a goodbye or get asked how I liked my (horrible) cut. I wish I had my $150 back. Avoid Janet Rufin. more

In this comfortabele and relaxing evironment, I was greeted with a warm, caring, and knowledgeable staff. Be very clear though when you book your appt. if you are getting more than one service, so that when you get there you won't be there for 4 hours because they only booked you for one. \r \r Eugene fixed my awful haircut that I got from another salon....and it styles so much better! He was very meticulous! My hair is tough to get color and highlights right; but for Janet, it was a breeze and she did not leave my hair too ashy, gold, or unblended with color....it looks natural and perfect! She knew exactly how to do to brighten me up! You pay a pretty penny, but it is worth it! I will definitely be back soon! \r Pros: detailed, warm staff, great hair! I have been coming to John for at least 6 or 7 years. He gives me the best short haircuts around. I travel from Staten Island just to see him. There is nothing better then leaving with a beautiful haircut for short hair. The compliments soon follow. Janet Ruffin's parlor is the best salon in NYC. It has a great, casual atmosphere, everybody is super friendly and Janet is a genius. I went there not satisfied with my hair color -it was not that bad, just not exciting. Janet listened to what I wanted, was very kind about the highlights I already had and announced that she had plans for me! A couple of hours later I emerged with sunny, bright, wonderful highlights, she had completely understood what I wanted! Also, Veronica is excellent, she gave me a fabulous haircut.\r You will not be disappointed; it is a very high-end salon with a cool and super friendly attitude!\r Pros: Genius hair color, great cut, very friendly and nice. I wrote a review about two months ago exclaiming over the quality of the haircut I got from Eugene and the color work Janet Rufin did, but complaining about sticker shock and the time it took to get this wonderful look done. I didn't know much about salons in New York at the time, and really mistook the professionalism and perfectionism of Janet's staff for coolness. I was wrong, and want to say so. I haven't had so beautiful a cut or color since. You really do get what you pay for at this excellent salon. \r \r So, I apologize for my earlier review. It was an ignorant thing to do. First of all, I must say that I am insanely picky about my hair. After being dissatisfied with the results of many of the hyped salons in this city, I decided to give Janet Rufin?s Parlor a shot. I ended up getting my hair colored by Janet and cut by Eugene, and it was the best salon experience I?ve ever had. What truly set this experience apart from all others is that Janet and Eugene each took so much time to listen to what I wanted done with my hair, and provide suggestions about the look I was going for. I have NEVER been to a salon that took so much time for the consultation, so this was a wonderfully unique experience. I ended up getting the best hair cut I?ve possibly ever had, and received numerous compliments about my hair and questions asking which salon I go to. Bottom line: I highly recommend Janet Rufin?s Parlor if you?re tired of the same ol? rushed, unsatisfactory service that the majority of salons provide. Word! I'm new to Manhattan and very fussy about my hair. I like to keep it long, which can be tricky since I also like it much lighter than my natural color. After little success at Arden with a ""highly recommended colorist"", I decided to give Janet a try. I am so glad I did! She did a fantastic job! She is meticulous, fun, and honest. John Gerard Griffith has been cutting my hair for two years now and after searching throughout New York for someone who ""gets it"" or rather gets what I want and what's best for me - he hits the mark! The salon is sweet, the people charming, and the best shampoos in town. It's more massage than shampoo. Then the haircut. GREAT! Love it and so does everyone else. more

I am so glad I found Janet Rufin's Parlor! My sister recommended me to the Parlor for my Japanese Straightening and I truly am grateful. I have been getting my hair straightened for a few years now and no place I have been to even compares with here. The Parlor itself is provides a comfortable, relaxing atmosphere. Everyone is very friendly and the staff is very accomodating. Great place!! more

I've been coming to Janet Rufin's now for the past year or so, following my favorite haircutter Jon Gerard all around the Flatiron neighborhood. I'm so glad that he has decided to set down roots here at this salon since it's also a wonderful experience. Unlike so many other places, it's quiet, sensual and soothing.
