I came in to correct a hideous highlight job I had done out of boredom at another salon that will not be named! I explained to Karen what I had in mind and she quickly put together a color that not only covered the copper streaks, but looked really natural and simply pretty. Everyone at the salon was very sweet and friendly and seemed to genuinely enjoy working with one another. I liked the vibe. more

I first came here as a brunette wanting to go blonde. After a thorough consultation with Janet, she proceeded with highlights. It is very clear that her goal is to send her clients out of the door as happy with their hair as they could possibly be. I have strayed from her salon once, opting for a cheaper place and regretted it. I ended up coming back to her salon for corrective color. I'm even blonder now (Sienna style) and love that even though my hair is light, there is still a lot of dimension (which I read is her expertise).\r \r Perks: her place is so cozy and they have yummy coffee. more

Sweet, friendly staff, nice color job for a brunette. My highlights didn't work out the first time and had to be redone, but they were very accommodating and took their time to get me the best results both on the first visit and the correction visit. I have always had a difficult time finding a stylist who could provide my curly hair with a cut that grows well or highlights that look natural. This has been a difficulty even at salons that cater to curly hair. Janet has been providing haircuts and highlights for me for about eight months. I have never felt as good about my hair and have never received so many compliments on it. more

the entire experience was lovely, she and her staff get along like a bunch of friends which really put me at ease, it was a very relaxed comfortable enviroment. more importantly - i left with the best haircut i've ever gotten. i absolutely loved the look she gave me that day and weeks later when it had grown out it looked even more fabulous. i continue to get compliments two months later and i tell all my friends to go to janet's. i can't wait to go back and see what she does for me next!! more

I've had my nearly black but graying hair colored twice by Loren, who suggested some subtle highlights, jto give more texture and life. I'm a very low maintenance, no-fuss kind of person who hates spending extra time in the chair, but I was totally convinced when I saw the results: shiny, rich, vivid but subtle, flattering color. I wanted it to be not too reddish brown, and Loren came up with the perfect shade that somehow manages to be both deep and cool. My husband who is a professional photographer and very picky said ""Wow, I love it!"" when he saw me from several feet away. Loren has me on an easy maintenance schedule so that I can alternate with single process, and the vibe at the salon -- friendly, efficient, comfy, no attitude at all -- is exactly what I'm comfortable with. It is slightly more than what I've paid before, but not enought to count -- I think it's great deal for Manhattan, quite honestly. Pros: great color, relaxed vibe more

I recently went to this salon where I had an amazing cut by Eugene and color from Janet. My highlights were in serious need of help (the blond had turned to orange) but Janet was very thorough and spent the time to repair. Eugene listened to all of my concerns and I was very happy with the results; he created a much more flattering but still natural look. I would highly recommend!!! more

I have been to a bunch of salons to get my hair cut & highlighted, but it was not until yesterday that I found someone to take the time to discuss what I wanted & what goals I wanted to achieve. Janet spent time w/ me before anything was done to ensure I left her salon happy. The staff made me feel at home. I felt as if I had been going there for years. The atmosphere is very relaxing. Since I moved to NYC three years ago, I struggled to find a good hair colorist, until I found Janet!! I tried several of the famous, expensive Madison Ave salons and was very disappointed by my hair color at each, especially at the cost of $600!! I resorted to only highlighting my hair when I was back home, across the country?until I finally found Janet!! Janet has highlighted my hair 4 times over the last 8 months and each time I am more satisfied than the last! She really listens to what you want and is great at achieving natural, mutli-dimensional color! Now, I get compliments on my hair color from strangers! Thanks Janet! Love Janet Rufin's parlor. John Gerard has been cutting my hair since 2003 when he 'saved' it from the worst haircut known to man. I have followed him to 3 different salons, and Janet's is by-far the best! It is a very casual atmosphere, yet up-scale in feel. I don't feel pampered in a phony way - just genuine. They really want me to look and feel my best.\r \r John is fabulous! I've never shown him a picture or given him much direction - he has taken the time to get to know me, my personality and my lifestyle and gives me a cut that works for my life (which has changed several times over the past 4 years). No matter what is going on in my life, I always feel great coming out of his chair - my haircut gives me a new lease on life and fits so well within my lifestyle it is just seamless. I can honestly say I have never 'fought' with a hairstyle he's given me, like I have with other hairdressers. \r \r Lauren does my color. She is the first professional colorist I've returned to. She also thinks about me and my lifestyle/personality and gives me something that fits. I once asked her for highlights in November and she categorically refused - saying that November is not the time to make your hair look sun-kissed. She is practical, with a sense of style (a great one at that). She has managed to create a formula that matches my original color perfectly (but better) while working in some appropriate highlights so that I don't look silly or out of season.\r \r I highly recommend this salon!!! i have recently started going to John for my haircuts. he came highly recommended through my sister. she was right. he does such a wonderful job on my hair. i finally found someone who i am happy with. i would highly recommend him and the salon in general is very down to earth and friendly. more

This is a really great salon with a really caring staff. Janet spent a lot of time discussing what needed to be done to make my color perfect, she even took the time to tell me the best shampoo and conditioner for my hair type. You never feel rushed, and the staff could not be more accomodating. I now get constant compliments on my color, and it looks healthier every time I go! I went to see Janet after reading about her in Allure magazine and then reading reviews on citysearch... I have had good luck with Allure's recommendations before so was hopeful... The experience more than surpassed my expectations. Janet took her time, asked lots of quetsions to figure out exactly what I wanted and while I did not do the best job of explaining myself, she managed to read my mind and give me the best hair color I've had in years. After living in NYC for 18 years and trying many salons, I finally feel that I have found the colorist I've been searching for. Thank you Janet. more

Janet used to color my hair when I lived in NYC. 5 years ago I moved to London, England. I miss Janet's expertise so much that I now travel back to NYC to have her color my hair. She is simply the best. Noone has ever come close to achieving the colors she has. I get so many comments when she has done it and am always very happy. I am so excited to learn that Eugene has joined her salon. He used to cut my hair and I cannot recommend him highly enough. He is so professional and has always given me the most amazing cuts. I've been going to Janet Ruffin's Parlor regularly for 7 months for cut and color- both of which Janet is a real pro at! First of all, Janet's personal manner and listening skills instantly put you at ease. And as for her cut and coloring skills, they are exemplary and some of the best in town!
