Beautiful and delicious food 12/8/2006

My boyfriend and I have tried almost every Japanese restaurant in the immediate Boston area. This was our first time at Fugakyu. Overall we really liked it. I got several pieces of Nigiri, a house special roll, seaweed salad and miso soup. He had shrimp and veggie tempura and soup. First of all, portions of the salad and soup were miniscule, tasty, but nothing particularly special. The Nigiri were huge and really really good - loved it. The tempura was incredibly beautiful, colorful, plentiful, and super flavorful. I have not seen anything like this anywhere else in Boston. They also have a nice selection of Sake. A couple things bothered us, though. First, the undersized portions of the appetizers. Secondly, our server seemed skeptical of our original order and suggested we get more food. We ordered a little more and ended up with way too much food. We are big eaters, too, so I don't know what that was about. Pros: Beautiful presentation of delicious food Cons: Not a great value for some smaller items more

Delicious, and not too expensive! 11/20/2006

I really enjoyed Fugakyu. We sat at the sushi bar, but didn't pull anything off the boat line. I especially enjoyed the torchons. Overall, I think it's the best sushi in Boston. Pros: Great sushi Cons: Expensive more

best sushi in the city 10/18/2006

I really hate to do this but I have to give them a 10, if for no other reason than Fu has consistently had the tastiest, freshest sushi I've had in Boston. I don't care if the restuarant is operated by Chinese, Japanese or whoever else...the food is great. Well, let me clarify that...the SUSHI is great. Aside from a few of their appetizers, I've never ordered anything but sushi there. (I keep meaning to, but the sushi is just too good to pass up.) I've also heard lots of poor service complaints from friends, and occiasionally I pick up an attitude vibe from the people at the front desk, but more often than not our waitresses have been pleasant and friendly. Perhaps we've just been lucky, but I find that if you make a little effort to be friendly with them, the service improves. My boyfriend and I have gone on kicks where we'll eat there every week (sometimes it's been twice a week) for months. It's addictive. As for the prices, they are defiantely on the higher end for sushi, but by no means astronomical. I've spent about the same $$ elsewhere on sushi that was horrible by comparison. All that being said, I dont regard Fugakyu as a ""special occaision"" restaurant. The ambience is cool at the sushi bar and in the tatami rooms (in that ""theme park"" kind of way), but its too loud and packed to make it a special night if thats what you're after. If you get there early, like between 5-6 there's little to no wait. We've gone in early just the two of us and asked for a tatami room and gotten one, so they can be accomidating when it suits them. And they do take reservations, so you can avoid the whole wait thing altogether if that's a concern for you. But if you should get stuck with an hour wait, (cus you're like me and start craving sushi later in the evening and want it to be worth your $) park your butt at the bar for an hour and chill out, that's what its there for. Pros: sushi is the best in the city Cons: noisy more

food great, service can do better! 9/27/2006

I have gone to fugakyu for 6 years now, ever since I discovered it my freshman year of college. I take people out there for special dinners and up until this year I have gotten pretty good service. Don't get me wrong - the sushi is just fabulous and the ambience AMAZING. But the service could be better. First off, the people at the front desk have ego's bigger than the size of the restaurant. I made reservations the Friday before Labor Day for Four people for my brother's going away dinner. We unexpectedley had another guest who was coming, so I called about an hour ahead to see if we could change it to five people. They told us to come into the restaurant so they could see what they could do. We arrived half an hour early and were told that since we had five people we would have to wait a whole hour and a half to get a seat. I made reservations specifically so I could avoid the mad rush. I asked him if there was anyway we could just pull up one more chair, we don't mind being cramped but I really wanted to take my brother here. They refused, saying they couldn't change it. So we were about to walk out and suddenly the host changed tune saying, you know I can get you seated in probably 30 minutes. but you will have to come back and check. so we checked in half an hour and he said we had to wait another hour. We left because it was too long. I went back last week with a group of people and it was great. We were seated in a private room, with a nice waitress. The only thing was that she only came in to bring us food or drinks, she never asked how we were doing, and we could never flag her down bc she never came by. For a ""house of exquisite elegance"" you would think that they would do better to standardize their service at the front of the house. I will keep coming though because I love the food and am convinced that the service can only go up from here. Pros: food, ambience Cons: service, service, service (and parking) more

Offensive Service --- I will never return- They film you while you eat! I was a regular-- UPDATED 8/31/2006

Id like to update my post. Fugakyu generously rectified the situation and quickly. The management was courtious and understanding. They deserve credit for making the situation right. As well the informed me they do not film people while eating. Do note that although we were treated horribly..the food as always was perfect. more

Pricey, but good! 8/8/2006

Of the various sushi places I've gone to in the greater Boston area, there aren't many I am particularly impressed with. Fugakyu is one of them. Service is great - friendly, courteous, and timely. Pros: food, service, ambience Cons: price more

Very good food, very expensive 7/14/2006

The food here is very good. It's a beatiful restaurant too. I recommend sitting by their cool sushi bar. Service here is very good, but with all this good stuff there comes a price you must pay for to get it. Pros: Good food Cons: Very expensive more

yummy but pricey 6/27/2006

This place has delicious appetizers and sushi. The fish is extremely fresh that it makes it hard to go back to cheap sushi. Other appetizers that are good are the unagi sandwich (for the eel lovers), spicy seafood or tuna salads, all the kaiyakis are quite tasty. They also have a wide variety of sushi rolls. Pros: the wide variety of maki rolls Cons: price more

Great food, service is absolutely HORRIBLE!!! 6/13/2006

Last weekend, I went to eat there with my husband. The food was excellent, as usual, but I never thought their service was up to par. I never really cared or did anything about it because all I wanted to do was go there to eat. However, something happened in the restaurant that completely shocked me. It really made me change my perception of the management team within this restaurant. As I was eating, I saw 2 waitresses, one of whom was my waitress that night, got into an argument with some customers. My waitress decides that it would be okay to swear at the customers. She screamed at some customers right in the middle of the restaurant. I was shocked and appalled that she would even think of doing something like that. It was completely inappropriate and absolutely inappropriately. All the other customers around me were shaking their heads in dismay. Now here's the part that made me furious: after the dispute was over, she walked over to my table and said, ""what the hell at you starring at? It's none of your business."" I was speechless and decided that it was not worth my time to get into an argument with. What horrible service! The management team really needs to fire this employee and find ones who will provide the appropriate service that customers pay for. Pros: great food Cons: horrible service more

Good sushi that's well priced... 6/4/2006

As a native Californian, I am usually very particular about sushi... having said that, FuGaKyu is pretty good and well worth their prices. The atmosphere and decent service only add to the value. They don't seem to offer the usual complimentary appetizers (miso soup, edamame, etc.) but the only major con is the wait and this is usually indicative of how good the place is - definitely recommend making reservations (especially on a weekend night). Pros: good sushi, nice atmosphere, good service Cons: long wait more

One of my all-time favorites 1/19/2006

I've been to FuGakYu 5 or 6 times, and each time I try something different, I am not dissapointed. The food is absolutely amazing, though the menu can be pretty daunting the first time you look at it. The unagi (eel) sounds frightening, but it has become my favorite. Service has always been very good, although it can be alittle slow on particularly busy nights. Expect a very long wait (of up to two hours) on weekends and some weeknights! Fortunately, the wait is worth it. Prices can be pretty expensive, but Japanese food is usually very expensive anywhere you go. There's a tiny sushi place around the corner with very similar prices to FuGakYu without the atmosphere. The decor is absolutely beautiful and authentic. Pros: amazing food, perfect atmosphere, good service Cons: 2 hour wait (nights), crowded, expensive more

AMAZING!!! 12/10/2005

I have lived in Japan, and I can vouch that this place has wonderful sushi! The salmon sashimi is simply THE BEST I have ever had (really, even compared to restaurants in Japan!). Yellowtail sashimi is also great. The pieces are big, juicy and FRESH! I also always get the Alaskan maki. As for appetizers, Sake Kinuta Maki is perfect -- I highly recommend it. The shitake soup or the lobster miso soup are a must! Also, for the brave, ankimo special is delicious. Also, their special drinks are really good. Try the Traffic Light -- it's really awesome. Bottom line - my friends and I go to Fugakyu all the time, and we haven't been disappointed yet. Yes, the lines are long (although not if you come on Sunday or earlier in the day) and the service is lacking sometimes. But the food is WORTH IT!!! Pros: Sushi!!!, Atmosphere, Appetizers Cons: Crowded, Long wait more

ban fugakyu 10/29/2005

I went there ""2"" times, and that's enough. The service is recommended, but the food was NO way worth it!! Two tries way more than enough!! more

Go somewhere to spend your money 10/21/2005

SEA BASS -- miso glaze was boring, served with boiled carrots and veggies that made no sense. GLAZED DUCK -- Japanese?? The poor fowl is wondering why it had to surrender its life for this dry, bland, unconvincing duck dish. UDON -- Here's where I'm mad. The broth was horrible and the noodles came out of a plastic bag (you can't fool me.) SASHIMI -- too expensive and the uni (sea urchin) was horrible. The ama ebi (sweet shrimp) was so so. Anyone notice how long their menu is? It's like an upscale Chinese take-out, no? (Take-out style: 10 folds in the menu with 200 choices.) Owned by Chinese people (like myself) No respectable restaurant has menus that extensive. The restaurant has no focus, no theme. Cons: Price, Service, Quality of food more

needs more bang for the buck 5/29/2005

i used to equate the prices with the quality of food and service i received at fugakyu, but lately, i dont feel the justification. an unhappy host and a waitress who barely spoke english make for an uncomfortable meal. the manager, joey, is absolutely wonderful. he can give suggestions for the whole meal from appetizers to desserts and can tell you the difference between each fish and the most tasty way to enjoy them. he is friendly and made me feel welcome and at ease while the rest of the waitstaff made me feel as though i had rudely stumbled upon their secret meeting of angry people. the food is still pretty pleasing, but given the whole experience, i'd expect more for my money - especially from the service team. even though it's further away, i recommend blue fin - less pretentious, pretty good japanese food, and definitely better service. more

Great Food & Fun atmosphere! 4/19/2005

This is a really fun night out. The atmosphere is unique and the food is terrific! We had to wait quite a while for our check but all in all we had a great time from the minute they closed the doors of our private eating area to the minute they opened them up for us to leave. more

A bit overrated 3/17/2005

This place has fancy Japanese food, but it is a bit overrated and overpriced. The entrees are good, but sushi is expensive and not as good as you can get elsewhere. more

Not Recommend At All 3/16/2005

Watch Out! FUGAKYU is not Japanese Restaurant. No Japanese sheff and no traditional food. We never eat such a big Sushi. The food cooks by Chinese is totaly wired... more

Best Sushi in Boston 3/4/2005

Fu has the best sushi around. They have amazing originals and some really interesting and tasty specials. Try the shrimp tempura maki, the spicy tuna maki and the pine tato maki (grilled pineapple and fried sweet potato) as an appetizer. more

Not happy. 7/21/2004

The service was hasty and poor. Our server could not understand or communicate with us in English -- ordering was a game of charades and not fun at all. The service was rushed and sloppy. The ambiance was like a cafe/cafeteria UNLESS you are fortunate to get seated in the shaded booths. The food was an unpleasant surprise -- nothing that we communicated arrived correct. It was just a very overpriced shoddy experience. Cons: , crowded, expensive more
