bad food, bad service?? 11/14/2007

NOT when i last dine there with my husband. waiting time was just right considering the size of the restaurant. after a long walk around to the 3rd floor, we were seated at a four person table and was greeted by our waiter .Our dinner was served after about 15-20 minutes after our waiter describe their specials for the evening. He recommended us a sake flight that blend very well with our apps and sushi and to get our sashimi thin slice for only 1 or 2 dollars more. fresh sushi and very tasty dessert. i recommend green tea tempura ice cream. Our check arrive after a pleasant dinner and short conversation with our waiter. He kindly ask for our valet ticket and our car is ready to go outside. We would recommend to make a reservations for the third floor. Nicely decorated, great food, professional and polite services . We will return in the future! more

Average sushi. Tasting menu disappointing. Will not go back. Much better sushi is found at Oishii in south end or Haru. more

Definitelly not worth the cash 10/10/2007

Im a pretty avid sushi eater, and I have been to Fugakyu upwards of 15 times. I think I go back for the abuse! The service is not exactly friendly, and they get pretty annoyed when you ask them about their specialty rolls. On a few different occasions I have had not so fresh fish, and the Shabu Shabu is certainly not worth the cost. I don?t have a problem paying for good sushi, actually there is a restaurant t in Medford, Yoki, that is very expensive, but its great, at Fugakyu this is not the case. It is extremely overpriced, and they have a bad habit of seating people on top of each other. I think I return each time hoping that it will live up to the hype, but it never does :( - skip it! Pros: Cool decor Cons: Sushi really just is not that great! more

Not so fabulous food and poor service. 10/4/2007

I was rather disappointed with the blocks of sashimi slabs they served when I ordered the Sashimi-Sushi deluxe Boat with my parents and husband. You can tell that the restaurant is not overseen by Japanese staff who should know that you cannot serve slices of tuna, salmon and other raw fish cut in 2 inch-thick pieces! We ordered the Deluxe Boat, thinking it would be a great specialty, but it was to our great disappointment and it was even grotesque trying to eat the slab of sashimi, feeling like you're really eating big chunks of raw fish. (And I love sashimi and sushi, too, so I know what they are supposed to be like.) We made reservations, and though we requested to be upstairs, they made us wait for over 30 minutes, and still we could not be seated. They eventually placed us in the first floor entrance row, which was not so pleasant, due to the noise of the reception and the hovering of the customers, looking over as to what we were ordering, as they waited to be seated. The girls do not smile at you, and it was overall not a very pleasant experience. The prices are high for the quality of the food and service. It is too bad since it is so close to my house! I recommend that they get a real Japanese sushi/sashimi chef who knows what it is to service real Japanese food, with service and politeness. Pros: The upstairs room with the screen view is somewhat different Cons: Overly priced, terrible sashimi, service, no parking, possibility of being seating in a gloomy room. more

ABSOLUTELY THE WORST 6/21/2007

As a foodie, I love trying out new restaurants and often find myself returning to the same favorite ones. Fugakyu is NOT one of them but we wanted sushi in that area so we ended up there. I read other reviews complaining about the non-Japanese staff factor. I already knew that this restaurant is owned and operated by Chinese people. So it's not 'authentic' Japanese (almost impossible to find in Boston), but I expect my server to understand the minimal English, as in, what I'm ordering. We ordered shrimp AND vegetable tempura(ONE appetizer). She brought us just the vegetable tempura. After we each ate one piece, we looked at eachother and asked, ""wait, didn't we get the shrimp & veg?"" When I asked the waitress to bring us just the shrimp tempura because she didn't get it right to begin with, she brought us what we ORIGINALLY ordered and gave us the attitude like WE messed up. NO, NO, NO. WE KNOW what we ordered. SHE did not speak good English, other items we ordered, we had to repeat them couple of times. more

Over rated restaurant. 6/16/2007

I don't understand why the people give them 5 stars rating each time when so many guests serious complained, it makes me sick... , if it is worth it, the marvelous service attitude and delight sushi should be served in the whole restaurant at opening time, not only for the specific area and specific waiter, meanwhile, shold I reserve the corner seat with a smiling waiter/waitress before I go in? NO, if you give them 5 STARS rating, then there should be less DISSAPOINTING OVERVIEW RATING on it, please, try to improve the disorganizing hospitality and sushi, then customers will give the fair rating, not themself. Pros: Location. Cons: Overrating. more

best sushi in Boston, fun atmosphere, open late 6/4/2007

I don't know what the reviewer below is talking about - this place has always been a consistenly great experience for me and one of the restaurants that I usually take friends from out of town to. I believe it's also open pretty late, which is nice. If you have to wait, there is a really fun little bar to the left where you can order some exotic cocktails while you wait for your table. I haven't been able to sit in any of the private rooms yet, but I enjoy the breezy Japanese atmosphere in the main floor of the restaurant (it's a little corny, but it's cool). The sushi is amazing - I love the Unagi and the Spicy Tuna here but there are a ton of other rolls and nigiri that are really good as well. Also, a good sake selection - last time I had a flight of sakes to try and it was great and each sake was a generous pour as well. I love this place and recommend it for groups or for out of town guests! Pros: great sushi, great drinks, open pretty late Cons: none that i know of more

The worst restaurant in Boston. 6/1/2007

Service is bad, I don't understand why there are so many people go to there, go somewhere else, save your money. Pros: Advertisement and food. Cons: The feeling that you have when your common becomes trash. more

Best Japanese dining experience in Boston 4/10/2007

For those of you who don't mind throwing around a little cash, this restaurant boasts an authentic Japanese dining experience, complete with your own person dining room (enclosed with Japanese doors and all), excellent food, and great service. What's great about my experience at Fugakyu was that a Japanese exchange student who i am good friends with was able to fully explain to me all the exotic dishes on the menu. Chicken, Beef, Pork, Sushi, Springrolls, Soups, and Noodles are this restaurants forte. Any of them are a good choice. more

Amazing sushi. Great service. What more could you want? 3/21/2007

I'm sure this is beginning to sound like a broken record... but Fugakyu really is wonderful. Not only is the sushi incredibly fresh, well assembled, and downright flavorful and complex (well, at least for sushi outside of the West Coast), the menu is a bit more diverse than a lot of sushi joints around here. I loved the Idaho roll with the sweet potato. Several other roles with teriyaki salmon and some good combinations of flavors really stood out on my last visit. The service is friendly and efficient. It's very professional and exactly what I want. Service for groups in small rooms has been as good as at tables in the main dining areas. When going out for sushi, it'd tough not to choose Fugakyu. Pros: Fabulous sushi. Great atmosphere. more

WOW! 2/25/2007

We just went to Fugakyu for the first time. The wait was not obscene, since we went for lunch. The Tatami booths are wonderfully delightful with an air of privacy. The appetizers were above average. The Kani Katsu was good. However, the SUSHI is the best. The Louisiana Roll is excellent but quite obscure. The Caterpiller roll is great for eel lovers. Dessert was excellent, being the Tempura Ice Cream. Their lunch specials are reasonably priced and tasty. Pros: Authentic Ambience, excellent food, good service Cons: I've heard about long lines..... more

Our wedding anniversary - next time we will find more ROMANTIC place, for shure!!! 1/19/2007

It was our 2-d year Wedding Anniversary, my husband just got a position at Harvard - many reasons to celebrate! So we chose Fugakyu for that. Husband dressed up in suit, I made beautiful hair - so, we appeared at the front door, expecting a friendly Japanese smile. This bi.ch at the front door didn't even look at us for about 3 minutes, even though she saw we just came in and we were standing there like some fools. And then she said how may I help you? After that, she ordered to the other servant to sit us, at a certain place and that woman was hesitant, and she almost yelled at her to do so. When we got to the place - we realized why, it was not romantic at all! In a little room were cramped 5 tables, and she put us in the middle - we were so exposed! Being in such environment - it is very not worth it. The whole atmosphere of service is very tense and reading bad reviews about service there I have to say it is very noticeable. If you are planning something important and don't wont it to be affected by such a ridiculous thing - as service, choose somewhere else to go. It might just spoil your mood. Sushi and food is good, and I a not discussing it here. BUT WHEN YOU GO TO A RESTORANT - FOOD AND SERVICE IS TO ESSENCIALS OF OVERALL EXPERIENCE, YOU CAN'T ENJOY THE FOOD WITH THE BAD SERVICE, AND YOU CAN'T ENJOY THE SERVICE WITHOUT GOOD FOOD. THEY HAVE TO WORK ON SERVICE - NOBODY WANTS TO SEE A MISERABLE FACE OF SERVANTS - THIS SHOULD BE AN EXPAMPLE OF AMBIENCE AND JAPANEESE HOSPITALITY. Pros: FOOD Cons: SERVICE more

Best sushi in Boston 12/17/2006

If I could afford it, I'd come here all of the time! Creative and great quality sushi. Nigiri is good but I think you have to take advantage of the many rolls that they offer. Service is great and I love the rooms with the sliding doors if you want a little more privacy. Pros: Great food Cons: Price, Hard to get in on weekends more
