Japanese Food with Chinese Twist 9/27/2002

Rolls are very creative and tempra is probably the best in Boston. Everything else is adequate hence either you have to know exactly what you're ordering or have a knowledgeble wait staff serving your table. I have had best dining experiences with a Japanese waiter whose uncle is also a sushi chef. He always brings my dining experience to a higher realm by telling me tiny tricks to make your food truly authentic. Except for a few staffs, the service is ""Chinatown"" quality. Pros: Food, Ambience Cons: Pushy Management more

Great, but maybe not the best. 9/26/2002

Fugakyu has very good sushi and other japanese entrees that anyone can enjoy. their decoration is very pretty and makes you feel like you are in japan not in boston. for the quality of sushi you get, it's relatively cheap for sushi. service could be improved. past few times i have been there it took them a while to take our orders and had to call over the wait staff to ask for refills on our drinks or water. i have not tried other sushi restaurants, but i think this one is of very good value and quality sushi. BTW, they only take reservations for 5 or more people. Pros: Good Food Cons: Bad Parking, Crowded, Bad Service more

Satisfies the most discerning sushi snob 8/25/2002

Eating sushi at Fugakyu is a delight. The restaurant which is located on Beacon Street near Coolidge Corner provides exceptional service and an ample and delicious menu. I would highly recommend their seaweed salad which is by far the best I've sampled and their A La Carte Nigiri selections. The Sake (salmon) Nigiri is consistently out of this world- Incredibly fresh with a smooth, buttery flavor and slightly sweet aroma. Heaven on a rice ball! more

Great Sushi 8/21/2002

Best sushi that I have had in Boston. Fresh and delicious. Great selection and great drinks. Service is okay. more

Darn Good Sushi 8/14/2002

Authentic sushi. This is not a Korean place that serves Sushi (no offense, but the Japanese do it best). Everything is good here and they have almost everything Japanese. Sushi bar is excellent and the tatami rooms are unique to Boston. Sushi chefs are engaging and add to the night's entertainment. Of course the downside is it's own popularity. Expect a 15 minute wait even after the meal rush. Note the extensive mixed drinks based on sake Pros: quality fish, fun atmosphere, authentic style Cons: slightly overpriced, long wait more

just two 8/7/2002

The best sushi ever!! Every time we go in... the hostess asks ""just two???!!!"" in a very loud voice... it is now a joke... but the food is AMAZING! more

some great points but overrated 8/4/2002

Fugakyu is very popular because of its stunningly beautiful sushi. However, on a recent visit it was disappointing and not worth the price. The server wrote down the wrong appetizer (from a different menu page) even though I ordered clearly and pointed to the what I wanted, and didn't care or do anything when I asked about it later. I got the worst ""cosmopolitan"" I have ever received. The tempura was good, but the overall experience was not good enough to justify the high check. Pros: beautiful sushi Cons: bad service, some bad drinks, overpriced more

worst service in town 7/30/2002

The food was good, but nothing out of the oridinary. Our apetizers arrived for dessert. We waited over an hour for our Sushi and helped ourselves to water on the bar. This was the second (and last) time we have been to Fugakyu and we were extremely disappointed both times. Cons: poor service, crowded more

A great place! 7/29/2002

This place always has the best and most interesting selections. I have been eating there for the last three years (since I moved to Brookline) and it is still my favorite place to go more

Fugakyu: Elegance for the not so elegant 7/29/2002

What I like best about Fugakyu is the atmosphere - classy but unpretentious. You can walk in with flip flops and your most casual outfit and it's no big deal. The sushi is consistently good - especially relative to competitors, and the variety of sushi entrees offered makes ordering off of the ""a la carte"" sushi menu an option and not a necessity. Wine, beer and sake selection is also a bonus. Great food, good service and worth the extra $$. Lunch offers a cheap alternative! Pros: Quality, Selection, Atmosphere Cons: A little pricey, Crowded on weekend, Service can be slow more

You call this Japanese? 7/2/2002

It is offensive to call this place Japanese, even worse that is rated the best sushi in Boston. I've been here twice and will never return. Fugakyu is beautifully decorated (although those nature videos are rather odd), has an extensive menu, and plenty of private party rooms. Unfortunately, the ""good"" ends there- on the last visit, I ordered an ""Unakyu"" off the menu. I received a salmon roll. After the waitress insisted that ""yes, you ordered an unakyu. That is the salmon roll."" It is quite unacceptable to not know unakyu is unagi (eel) + cucumber. Add that to mediocre-quality sushi, horrendous service (it shouldn't take 20 minutes for drinks to arrive!) and poor managerial response to a spill accident by the waiter. Go to Oishii or Sakurabana . Fugakyu may have the ""look"" right, but the so-called ""best of Boston"" food and service offends me, a native Japanese. Pros: Beautifullly decorate Cons: Service, Unknowledgeable staff, Mediocre sushi more

You want sushi, go here! 6/20/2002

It's definitely the best sushi that I've had so far in Boston. While pricey, its worth it. more

Great sushi, terrible service 6/4/2002

The sushi is some of the best I have ever had. However, the service is also among the worst I have ever experienced. After we were seated, we were practically ignored all night by the wait staff. It was difficult enough to flag our waiter down to take our order--getting our check was even harder. Our waiter never bothered to come back to pick up the payment for the bill. I had to walk up to the front and make the hostess take my payment. The sushi was good enough that I would go back the next time I am in Boston. However, I am prepared to be thoroughly disappointed by the service. more

My Favorite Sushi Restaurant 6/2/2002

I LOVE Sushi!! I've been to almost every sushi bar/restaurant in town and in my own opinion, I'd have to say this was the BEST! Beautiful Restaurant, the design of the restaurant is amazing! Good service, Great Atmosphere, Great Food and drinks. I insn't cheap, so I've only been there 10 times in the last year. But if I could afford it, I'd be there atleast 3 times a weak. :0) Pros: design, staff Cons: expensive more
