A Very Austin Place 11/23/2006

Chuy's is a great place to eat for anyone new to Austin (and is tired of eating BBQ). The restaurant itself is like a 50's diner meets Tex-Mex and is decorated so that the place sreams ""Elvis!"" Just like how the singer was great, the food served is great as well. There are so many great items to recommend, that I say go there yourself and you will definitely find something that yout like. You also have the option of enjoying this food outside as well. Of course, such a great price comes with the price of a great amount of time to wait to get seated. But people still come back, and you should check the place out and find out for yourself why. Pros: Great food and awesome decorations Cons: Long wait more

Different in a really good way 11/2/2006

So it seems like alot of people complain about the lack of authenticity at Chuy's but what can you expect? The whole restaurant is a tribute to Elvis! I think that the problem is most people go to Chuy's expecting the stereotypical Mexican food place and that is not what it is. It has a very different and original atmosphere. The Deluxe Tomatillo sauce is AMAZING and I love the ""Big as yo' face burrito"" (that is the real name). The wait can be really long but for the most part it is a really fun place to go with friends and hang out. And once again, the food IS good! Pros: Food, atmosphere Cons: wait more

Barely passable Tex-Mex 10/23/2006

I have been to three different Chuy's; two in Houston and one in Austin; and I have never has a really good meal at any of them. At best, it was passable Tex-Mex. My main complaint was the heaviness of their tortillas. There seemed to be more than a pinch of cement as an ingredient. The sauces were, at best, fair. I realize from experience that sometimes you have to try a place a few times to discover better entrees. But, there are way too many quality Mexican joints around with a proven track record for me to waste any more money on Chuy's. I gave 'em a fair chance, but they didn't come through. ADDENDUM! I wanted to add that I am completely baffled by and suspicious of the ratings system on this site. This restaurant had 86 reviews: 42 HR, 13 R, 13 A, 8 BA and 10 NR. For the life of me, I fail to see how that translates into a 9.7 average no matter WHAT scale you grade on. Pros: I always enjoyed the company of the people I went there with. Cons: Everything other than the good compamy! more

Best nachos in town! 8/28/2006

I just wanted to say that I am appalled by the review below. Chuy's is one of the best Mexican restaurants in Austin and my advice to torianne212 is to never go out to eat again. Any place you go out to eat you are served 'horrendous' proportions and enough for me to make 2 or 3 meals out of. It's up to the individual to choose proportions wisely. With that said, along with Chuy's great food and drinks (I suggest the Texas Martini) they have a friendly waitstaff and great atmosphere. I have never had a bad experience at Chuy's! Pros: great food, friendly staff, great Texas Martinis more

Yeah for fat asses all over Texas!!! 8/11/2006

This place is disgusting. The portions are HUGE. This is a perfect example of why Americans value quantity over QUALITY of food. It also helps explain why 30% of Texans are overweight.\r It doesn't matter how many chalupas/tacos/chips you give me per serving, it needs to taste like food, not like garbage covered in iodized salt. This should be illegal. The portions are horrendous and only contribute to the obesity epidemic in this country. Try cooking at home for a change, stop feeding your kids junk. Yellow cheese is not real food. Set a good example. more

Chuy's rocks!!! 6/11/2006

I'd heard a lot about this place and brought some out-of-town guests who wanted a truly Austin experience. We were not disappointed. The inside is kinda funky and it definitely looks like a fun college hangout. (Oh, to be a student again!) Self-serve chips and salsa were very much welcome and the choice of 2 out-of-the-ordinary salsas were both different and good. Each had their own little bite, but weren't excessively hot. (With a party of 8, we had an average wait, but it was fine just sitting in the bar with the chips 'n' salsa.) The day's special Golosa Enchiladas were probably the tastiest dish I've had in a long long time. They were really outstanding in presentation and in flavor. Spicy, like I like it! The prices are very very reasonable, especially for the kind of quality food one gets here. I definitely can't wait to make another trip out to this place! Pros: fantastic food, great prices, great service Cons: none worth mentioning more

the nachos rock!!!!!! 4/12/2006

I've been eating at Chuys for years for their nachos. They are incredible!!!!! I order the special nachos, or the panchos and the creamy jap dressing on the side is a must!!!! It's so good on the nachos. You won't be disappointed. The steak burrito with green hatch is really good, but as a whole have never like many of the other dishes. The chicken is very dry and bland. My kids even think the chicken tenders are gross. more

Great Place, Ok Food 1/31/2006

I have been a Austin resident for quite a while now. Chuy's is a great restaurant with a great atmosphere, but the food is mediocre at best. Anyone saying Chuy's has the best Mexican in Austin, really needs to get out more. Food's not bad, just not extraordinary. Go for the experience, margaritas, and the atmosphere, not the food. Pros: Atmosphere, Margaritas Cons: Food, Price, Wait more

Mmm mmm Good! 8/11/2005

I LOVE this restaurant. Yes, you usually have to wait however that is for a reason! Once you are seated the service is excellent and the food is wonderful! The chimichanga w/sour cream tomatillo sauce is to die for! It's so big all of you ladies out there will definately need a to-go box! Pros: chimichanga, service Cons: wait more

great food! 6/30/2005

I love their chicken chimichanga. It's worth going there for. Pros: great food, good service, nice ambience more

Great service, great food 4/9/2005

My family and I visit the north 183 location weekly. The service is always great and the food is yummy. Now that the weather is getting warmer the outdoor tables are a great place to dine or just hang out. Pros: Excellent service, Low Prices more

Favorite place 4/1/2005

My husband and me eat here once a week, if not more. We cannot get enough of the frozen margaritas and everything else. I am from a border town and know what authentic Mexican food tastes like. This food is not intended to be that. I think Chuy's is an Austin original and that is why it is highly supported. Go Chuy's!!! Pros: Jap. Ranch dressing, margaritas, green chilie festival more

The Chuychanga 3/24/2005

The Chuychanga is Chuy's version of a chimichanga. It is one of the best items on the menu. The Barton Springs location is a great place to meet for lunch, happy hour or dinner. The jalepeno ranch salsa is also great! more

Lance Armstrong's Favorite Mexican Food 3/24/2005

This is a favorite spot for Lance, and with good reason. Great margaritas, funky interior with many odes to Elvis. And just really, good, consistent Mexican food. No wonder other locations have popped up in other Texas towns over the years. Pros: margaritas, scene Cons: long wait more

favorite place to eat 1/25/2005

Chuy's is the best place to eat Tex Mex in Austin! Try the chicken enchilladas w/ deluxe tomatillo sauce or steak fajitas w/ wheat tortilla shells. Be sure to order the jalepeno ranch dip with your chips and salsa--there's no charge. They also have spicy and mild salsa--I like the mild one that's called 'table sauce.' When I first moved to Austin, we ate there and for some reason I didn't like it. I tried it again 1 year later, and have never been disappointed since. I was new to Texas and I think I didn't know how to order! Oh, and they don't add lard to their beans! Pros: fresh food, healthy options, best chips more

Don't hate on Chuy's 9/9/2004

All the Chuy haters just don't know what to order! Chuys is one of the best places in texas to eat good, hot, cheesy, yummy food. They have the best rellenos I've ever tasted. You gotta try the shrimp tacos...wow! ...It's about as good as cheap mexican food gets! Oh and Green Chili Festival rocks! Lots of spicy new dishes to tempt any taste bud. gotta have my weekly Chuy fix. Pros: great food, shrimp tacos, awessome service Cons: , need more parking, salsa is ok more

AMAZING 8/24/2004

Just a note-people with a clue do not come here expecting ""authentic"" Mexican food. It's good, not FANTASTIC, but good-Tex-Mex, plain and simple. The wait can be long on weekends, but I've never had less than exemplary service which more than makes up for it, and I love the atmosphere. Here's another hint for some of you:If you're looking for a romantic meal, go somewhere else. Most people over 45 or so probably won't get it. Chuy's is UBER-cheap, and anywhere that is as completely packed as it is most of the time can't be anything but awesome, obviously. Otherwise you'd get right in. Pros: CHEAP, friendly staff, GREAT enchiladas Cons: , long wait on weekends, salsa could be better more

Trash Mexican Food 1/13/2004

If people in Austin have rated Chuy's #1 for Mexican food then people in Austin really don't know what quality Mexican food should taste like. This chain-type food is really average and in some cases below average. If you want great Tex-Mex, I highly recommend Maudies. N. Lopez more

Chuy's....no. 1???? 10/16/2003

When they said ""Best of Austin"" I thought they meant it. I don't agree with all the choices really. The one I agree with is sadly last on the list (it should be in the the top 5 atleast). There are far better mexican restuarants in Austin..they may be little restuarants but they make up for the size in the great food. Rather than have a huge, over priced restuarant with low quality mexican food. To be honest there are to many small restuarants to name here that are by far better. But in the end this is just my opinion... Give the little restuarants a chance. more
