Outstanding Food!!! 1/5/2009

I've been eating Mexican and Tex Mex for over 40 years in Houston, Dallas Ft. Worth,, San Antonio, Austin and a lot sof smaller towns all over the state. I'd rate Chuy's in the top 5 of all of them. The food was great, service was outstanding and although the price was a couple of dollars more than I normally pay at the majority of the other places the quantity was also greater. I was surprised at how busy it was at 4:30PM on a Friday but we didn't have any problem getting a seat right away. more

Good times.... 11/15/2008

If you want to have a little fun with a whole lot of energy then this is the place to go. I went on a Saturday afternoon and it was packed with families and college students. The wait for a table was 45 minutes long but, it wasn't too bad considering there was a self-serve chips and salsa bar and you could order drinks before your meal. It was fast and easy! Before too long, (or was it?) we were at our table ordering our food. The food was really good and the service was great, thanks to Jimmy G. a.k.a. ""Nancy"". I was torn to get a salad and had ordered the ""Chicka-chicka Boom-boom"" instead and the sauce is so good! Creamy and rich but, the cilantro and lime give it a fresh appeal and cuts the creamy-richness in half. The chicken inside was lean and flavorful and without the ""icky-chicken"" taste. The desert I had was recommended by our server, a mexican cake, was excellent and something I had never had! After all of that wonderfully loud food, it cooled and calmed my palate and made everything so satisfying, even though I was so full from my entree! My only complaint would be that the food is a bit salty and would like it to be toned down especially for the children's menu. Pros: High energy, tasty margaritas and tortilla chips. Cons: It was a little warm inside and the food was salty (salsa, beans and children's mini tacos). more

Not going back 11/3/2008

The only thing that keeps this place in business is its local charm. I watched 6 tables that came in AFTER me be seated varying from 2-4 person parties. I had a party of two. The hostesses are all high-school girls, and that's exactly how the place is run. I was given a cup of water which was half-full when I got my meal, and I didn't see my server (who appeared to be stoned off her a$$ the entire time) again. It wasn't until I finished my meal that I got a refill. The food was just as lousy as something I'd expect from Taco Cabana. If you're a local Austin half-baked-hipster, you'll love it because it's sooooo Austin. If you have any taste, I'd advise spending your money elsewhere. Pros: They serve food Cons: Everything else more

Best tex Mex in the country 8/21/2008

I have tried in vain to find a better Tex-Mex joint. This is the best there is period. Consistent, tastey and quick (once you get a seat). Well worth the wait. Pros: Best Tex Mex there is Cons: There is a wait. The decor is unique but cheesy more

Not so good.... 5/1/2008

I've given Chuy's two or three chances since living in Austin and have never had a good meal there. Not to mention - do they buy their margarita mix from a liquor store? It tastes like that stuff you buy off a shelf? What about real lime juice? \r \r I usually get cheese enchiladas and I'm pretty picky about them. They weren't good at all. They were so dry, it was awful. I think this place has history in Austin and that's what people like. It's a great place for kids, but not when you're looking for good food. I couldn't believe they didn't have black beans! What the? Don't think I'll be going back unless I have to :-( Pros: Fun environment, good service Cons: Food/Margs not so good more

Get the Elvis Green Chile Fried Chicken 4/23/2008

Love the food. Very delicious and inexpensive. I would recommend the fried chicken. Fried chicken in general has been my absolute favorite since I was a kid, so I can safely say with confidence that this is the BEST fried chicken ever! I also go to Chuy's in Houston and San Antonio for it. Pros: Food Cons: Don't know yet... more

This is TEXMEX! 1/17/2008

If you want the true Austin experience and love your Tex Mex, this is the place. \r \r Try the chili rellenos with the ranchero sauce--you won't be disappointed. And, always have the refired beans, they are the best in Austin! more

Average food with great PR 12/19/2007

The food at Chuy's is only average, but they have ""buzz"" and it's considered a hip place to like esp. among white people, who make up the majority of the clientele. This is not to say the food is lousy by any means, although I've always found it to be on the bland, greasy side. I'd just as soon head over to the east side for some authentic tex-mex that's cheaper and tastier. They do have funky decorations on the walls and hanging from the ceiling. Pros: ambience Cons: bland, boring, greasy more

The Only Place for Tex-Mex 12/12/2007

I have been going to Chuy's since I was a young child (we went to the Lamar location with the red fish). Now I live downtown and frequent the Barton Springs location at least once a week. The creamy jalapeno is amazing and I love to buy the dip for tailgating or parties. I will be moving to Dallas in 2008 and I am very excited that they have a Chuy's so I can continue my addiction. Pros: Amazing Mexican Martinis and Margaritas Cons: The long wait - but it is just more time to eat chips and have margaritas :) more

Best Tex-Mex Anywhere! 4/6/2007

My favorite dish at Chuy's is the Classic Tex-Mex. It's two cheese enchiladas smothered in chili con carne (spicy tomato-based chili sauce with beef) and comes with rice and beans. It comes sprinkled with raw red onions so ask for those to be left off, if you prefer. Get some of their tortillas, too. And make sure you order some creamy jalapeno dip with your chips, it's soooo good! Pros: Food, prices and atmosphere Cons: Long waits for a table :( more

They have earned best Tex-mex food in Austin in my book 3/25/2007

Great queso, knowledgable staff, fun location. Really good food. Best tex-mex in Austin! Long waits are worth it but be prepared if you have kids. Pros: Location, food Cons: Wait can be long more
