I had read about Artisanal Bistro in a travel magazine and it was great!! The Onion soup was exceptional! It was just as good as the onion soup my mom makes up in Quebec! The ambience throught the resturant was spectacular and the servie was quick and efficent! I would say congradulations to them on a great buisness! I will definitely go back!!!!! more

huge disappointment 1/29/2011

I was looking foreard to try Artisanal during restaurant week, but was disappointed by the meal. The beef was a lump of stringy overcooked mystery meat. The salad?s greens were fresh and flavorful, but it was a big bowl of lettuce with nothing else. more

Great dining experience, but.... 12/28/2010

I've waited for just the right time to experience Chef Brennan's Artisanal (being a huge Picholine fan), and overall, the experience was absolutely wonderful. The folks at the door were gracious, the decor was warm and inviting on a cold, winter's day, and the cuisine was exceptional and perfectly presented. My guest and I both believed that the fondue du jour was the highlight. Bravo Brennan!! With all this going for it, why does management appear to hire dour waiters who all seem like they would rather be someplace else? Requesting another glass of wine (or in our case, several glasses) seemed to irritate not only our waiter, but also a fellow waiter or manager when our waiter was no where to be found. I understand shift changes, but hey, we were still there enjoying every other aspect of Artisanal. That said, we won't be denied Chef Brennan's experience and will definitely return. Maybe we just caught all the waitstaff on a bad day.... more

Definitely reconsider!!! 12/17/2010

I am a regular customer of Artisanal and always had a good experience. This restaurant should be a clear choice to invite a large group (11 people) for a holiday lunch. Think again! - it is a BAD decision. Apparently a comfortable table for this size group starts at ?12? (not 11) - so we were all very cozy around a round table. And, the service for a big group is non-existant. The wait staff was extremely unattentive and slow. But you will pay for it anyway with an 18% gratuity (which was underlined twice in red pen on our check - very subtle!). A normal lunch (3 courses) took more than 3 hours - in fact, our waiter left for the day and another shift took over! Ten out of eleven of our group ordered steak frites: the flank steak was hardly recognizable, extremely small and looked like something ?left over? from the kitchen. The filet mignon was better, but had to be sent back to be cooked as requested (medium) - it was finally presented after re-heating it, and tasteless. Maybe that is why we provided an endless supply of ?ketchup? - or was it for the cold french fries? It is hard to say. Don?t expect any bernaise sauce either - after reminding the waiters 3 times, we were told that they ?don?t have any?! We spent $795.00! and left the restaurant disappointed and embarrased we had taken our group there for what should have been an enjoyable, delicious holiday lunch. Definitely reconsider!!! more

I LOVE this place 7/2/2010

I went here last night and loved every second of it, this place is amazing, a friend has been promising to take me for ages and it was totally worth going, best fondue ever, and the customer service was also awesome, if you are thinking about going, just do it, you wont regret it Pros: The Cheese more

Cheese Heaven 6/29/2010

I've been here several times and have always been satisfied. My gf is a cheese freak, so a trip here can usually suppress her craving. The food is very good. I haven't been disappointed with an entree yet. However, the cheese and wine are the main attractions here. The fondue is always a hit and can be eaten as a main course. There's also a great choice of wines to go with the extensive cheese selection. I just wish they gave a little more cheese for the money you spend. The portions can be a little too small to satisfy your stomach. Otherwise, a great spot all around. Pros: Food, Cheese & Wine Selection Cons: Small Cheese Potions more

Surprised by some of the negative ratings 6/15/2010

I visited for an early lunch/brunch on Sunday, June 13, 2010. Hard to decide from all the cheeses, other dishes, and wines available, but I wanted to try a flight of wines so picked ""Sparkling Beauties"" with 3 sparkling wines and 3 cheeses. I also had an order of Gougeres (delicious and warm from the oven). The wines were a Cava from Spain, a Taittinger ""Cuvee Prestige"" from Champagne, France and an Jura Arbois Rose' from France. The cheeses were three that I really like--Humboldt Fog blue-veined goat cheese, Sonoma, CA, Manchego, Spain, and Comte, France. i was also tempted by a carmelized onion tart, snails or English cheddar sandwich with bacon and apple. I would have liked larger portions of the cheese (as others have noted) even if it meant paying a bit more. The special that Sunday was 100-cheese fondue! Nice atmosphere. Families from young children to grandparents were enjoying brunch. Will want to visit again when in NYC. Pros: Cheeses, wines, cheeses, wines, other dishes Cons: The cheese servings could be more generous more

Artisanal on Behind the Burner 6/2/2010

I was just reading about the great food at Artisanal on Behind the Burner. com! more

Biggest letdown in several years! 5/18/2010

Artisanal is located in a random spot in Murray hill. It's a large restaurant with no soul. The food was not good. It was what I'd expect from cheap take out. Artisanal just charges insane prices (think union sq cafe or babbo) and offers horrible service for it. Avoid this place unless you want to feel at home if you're a tourist with a bad guide book. Pros: wants to be balthazars which is a good goal but.... Cons: Mediocre food at best with bad service and ridiculous prices more

Delicious cheese -- but not enough of it 3/11/2010

The rest of the food is good, but not outstanding, so I'll focus on the cheese. The selection is tremendous and many of cheeses I've had here rank among the best I've sampled anywhere. That said, cheese is not gold. It's milk, salt and bacteria. If I spend $20 on it, I expect to get more than three decent-sized mouthfuls -- and I don't consider a stack of bread an adequate substitute. I'll end with a warning: Don't come here if you don't like cheese. There is plenty of other stuff to eat -- and much of it is pretty good -- but the entire place smells so much of cheese that it tends to sicken those who don't like cheese. I've had it happen to friends on two different occasions. Pros: Excellent cheese selection Cons: Stingy cheese portions more

it was alright, not great but not terrible either 3/6/2010

I went here last night with my sister from out of town. She loved it (but she lives in the midwest and the restaurant selection in her area is quite limited, so by comparison I can understand that she loved it), but I thought it was just OK and won't rush back. The service and atmosphere was good. Food was just OK, I'm not raving about it. I got the short ribs, and the menu said it came with parmesan polenta. I don't think there was more than 2 tablespoons of polenta with my dish. Meat was good though. There are better places to go, esp. for the price (about $160 for two after tip and 2 glasses wine each). Oh, the wine was excellent. Pros: service was good Cons: food just wasn't that terrific more

My worst dinner ever! Never Again! Beware! 2/15/2010

This is the worst restaurant experience I have ever had in NYC. We enjoy fine dining and french cuisine and decided on a Valentine's dinner at Artisanal. We usually do Union Squire Cafe or similar places, but this year decided to do something different. We arrived at the restaurant and were seated in area which was overcrowded, to say the least, two sets of two rows of small round bistro tables were diagonally set along the restaurant, my elbows were touching those next to us and more tables just anywhere they could they fit them. It was already crowded and chaotic and they kept rearranging the tables as we sit, lifting them up and above everyone's heads (some serious lack of planning in terms of seating arrangements here). We were seated and it was 30 minutes or more before anyone came. 20 minutes later the waiter came and asked us again about our wine choices which he claimed he simply forgot. Then it was another 30 minutes for the wine to come. So, an hour on into our Valentines dinner we were sitting on an empty table with water only, no bread, hor douves or anything else. After more than an hour an half I had to motion the waiter and asked him if we are going to get anything we ordered, or at least some bread to go with our (near empty) water glasses. I had to really make the point to him. He was disappearing about 10-15 minutes at a time and more and nobody was getting anything. Then the wait station machines went down , which they covered with napkins and put a signs ""do not touch"". So we sat and waited, and waited, and waited. About two hours later we finally got wine and some bread which we had to remind everyone for. Finally, hor douves arrived cold and nothing memorable in terms of taste. Also, I ordered the pate with cornichons, one of which looked like it had been bitten off. Disgusting! Maybe it was just broken, but at a restaurant, let's at least try for a little something in terms of presentation. Our experience was now getting more than ridiculous. Dinner arrived with no appropriate cutlery and so we eventually had to start and a steak knife was delivered 10 minutes later. Again, at the end we had to ask for more water as there is nobody really attending to the tables. Wait staff was simply walking around completely out of it. The food was average and for the price we paid poor quality. Finally, the much waited dessert 'fondue for two' came which had 3 bits of an strawberry, not even a whole one, somewhat strange that for the price of 59 per couple they could not include a whole strawberry! Everyone around us experienced the same wait time and a family and a couple simply left before their meals arrive. I will never again go there, nor will recommend this place to others and will make sure that all NYC friends and their friends are fully aware of this experience. For a place that charges $150 and more for dinner for two this is simply unacceptable on any night. The level of service was never we had ever experience in any place on earth. Pros: None to be found Cons: service, wait staff, everything more

love it 7/30/2009

They dinners are consistently spectacular and satisifying. Pros: they have great food, decent price Cons: I don't like this location. more

Really great experience! 6/10/2009

My husband and I went for our anniversary because we LOVE cheese. I was a bit skeptical because of the bad reviews but we decided to go anyway. We started off with 2 stilton martinis(which were delicious) at the lounge/waiting area and then went to our table. We ordered 4 cheeses and the gougeres. The cheeses were ridiculously good (we asked for stinky) however, the gougeres were not as fantastic as everyone says! They were just like mini rolls that tasted like cheese - I thought there was going to be cheese melted inside of them but there wasn't ( I should have asked!) Then I had an app portion of the mussels and the mac and cheese (both were fantastic) and my husband had the lamb (he said it was good) Then we had the cheesecake and the waitress, Amy, was fantastic, she had written ""Happy Anniversary"" in chocolate on the side of our plate! The service was great !!! If I were to go back I would skip out on the entree and would probably just have a plate of 15 cheeses and extras(honey, walnuts, proscuitto, etc...) and a nice bottle of wine. Pros: CHEESE more

Terrific Service, Awesome CHEESE! 3/14/2009

We went here for dinner before going to see a show. Since it's not super close to Times Square, we told the server and she made sure that we were out with plenty of time. We ordered these ""cheese flights"" that had wine pairings - little glasses that go with each piece of cheese. Not only were they delicious, but a really cool idea. We then had 2 entrees - I had the skate ""wing"", my boyfriend had a steak. Our server described the skate exactly the way it came out - which was delicious. The fries were really tasty too. I had profiteroles with pistactio ice cream in them. The guy drizzled chocolate on them right at the table. Tasty! OH the wine! It was really good! We had a sommolier visit the table who really know pretty much everything I've ever wanted to know. Really tasty stuff. And you can get something like 100 different wines by the glass! (We didn't want a full bottle after the flights with the cheese!) My honey and I can't wait to go back. Pros: Attentive, knowledgeable staff, really cool cheese plates Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

Steak Tough, Staff Dismal at Artisanal 3/5/2009

I went to Artisanal for the prix-fixe menu, and while the price represents a very good value, the food leaves much to be desired. More specifically, the hanger steak was the toughest piece of meat I've ever attempted to eat. I say attempted because it proved literally impossible to chew at medium rare. Moreover, while the service was competent in its execution, the staff seemed altogether unhappy to be there. My friend commented to me that no one smiled, and the atmosphere seemed more appropriate for a funeral than a bustling bistro. I did get some cheese to go, and the counter staff helped in making delicious, appealing choices. Avoid unless you're in the mood for a real downer. more

RUN to try Artisanal now! 2/7/2009

Prepare to ascend into cheese heaven when you enter Artisanal. We have enjoyed their prix-fixe lunch twice... more

Prix-Fix absoulutely amazing value 1/19/2009

with a lunch prix fix, you get three courses, amazing service, delicious bread, welcoming atmosphere, and much more, all for 25 bucks. Coming here without reservations is not a good idea, although our party got lucky and scored seats within 20 minutes. Yes, a long wait, but everybody walking out the door had a smile and nod telling us to hold in there, it would be well worth it. The creme brule was absoulutely terrific. I've been to Paris as a vacatioin, and the prix fix creme brule here was definitely better. Even with that, we couldn't help but get a chocolate fondue. Delicious. Cheese lovers would be happy with the cheese fondue, french is the best for them. Unlike more amatuer french restaurants, this one has flavors that can knock one and other out. Ask about which wines are best with what cheeses and the waiters will give you a definite, quick answer. They know everything in and out of the menu. You won't regret coming here Pros: food, service, bread, wine, atmosphere Cons: long line more

rip off 11/12/2008

This place is a rip off they charged my credit card 4 times not including the correct one and won't return my phone call to remove the charges. Cons: don't use your credit card more

Right Place for Soup and Meat.. 10/9/2008

The few times that I've been to the Artisanal Fromagerie and Bistro, it's been with clients for work and only at lunch. I'd love to dine here in the evening but it always seems to be filled with suits at that hour. Meh, not really my type of French bistro especially after a long day at work. But the food is very good and the service is great. You can't go wrong with their meats or the soups. Pros: staff, food more
