The Art of Lunch 8/19/2008

I patronized Artisanal to take advantage of a generous Restaurant Week menu. A cold ""summer"" pea soup was followed by sauteed skate in an orange grenobloise reduction with cauliflower, capped off by profiteroles (very good). All in all, a very solid bistro experience in a clean and airy dining room perfect for business lunch. Pros: Fresh, atmospheric space; tasty dessert Cons: Service can be slow at peak times, gets busy at lunch more

Parmesan gnocchi's FABULOUS 8/14/2008

Went for restaurant week & had a great time with my colleagues. I I loved loved loved the parmesan gnocchi's as a starter & the salmon over tabouleh was delish. The ambience was very festive, didnt' have any issues with the wait staff...big sticking point for me. more

Avoid this place!!!! 7/20/2008

Worst dining experience ever. I would never go back there again. The staff was rude and terrible service overall. more

For the fondue lover 7/8/2008

As you walk inside you smell cheese. It's perfect for the fondue lover. Reserverations are recommended. Pros: Romantic atmosphere Cons: Very expensive more

and there's a cheese shop too! 6/2/2008

The staff was very knowledgeable, particularly about wine and cheeses. if you have time, try one of their flights of three cheeses with accompanying wine tasting (you will get three small glasses). The buy one or more of the cheeses on your way out. The rest of the menu is interesting, and what we tried there we liked a lot. more

Well...... at least the cheese was good 5/20/2008

I can honestly say that I've never experienced a bassiere with such an prolific cheese selection. Everything you've ever wanted is here from mild Abbaye de Bellocs to stronger ones like Fourme d'Ambert. The servers also knew their stuff, well, at least enough to tell you which cheeses were strong or mild. Everything in between sounded made up or embellished. The tartare was very flavorful and for those of you that like raw beef, this was pretty good. The classic brassiere dishes like the steak frites and escargots were disappointing. The steak was serving way too rare for medium rare and the escargots came out tough. I had to the it back. When it was repaced with octopus, I had one piece and left the rest. Everything looked pretty but tasted average and for the price, I'd rather eat elsewhere. Pros: Great selection of cheeses, impressive wine list, pricey for what you get Cons: food more

Prepare to ascend into cheese heaven when you enter Artisanal. 5/19/2008

We have enjoyed their prix-fixe lunch twice now, and each time the items prepared with cheese have absolutely taken our breath away. more

Unbelievably Bad Experience 4/9/2008

My experience at Artisanal last night was so bad it actually motivated me to sign up on CitySearch to write this review. I do so with sadness and regret in that I have for many years enjoyed this lively bistro which, for our neighborhood, was something of a culinary trailblazer at a time when there were not many great dining options. more

Avoid this place! All quality has deteriorated since opening 3/29/2008

As echoed by others here, the quality of food and service has dropped substantially. It is sad to see another neighborhood restaurant falter in a location otherwise devoid of quality dining options. Pros: Convenient Murray Hill Location Cons: Abhorrent service, overpriced and underperforming more

Amazing Meal: great for vegetarians 2/25/2008

The cheese and meat plate is amazing. I love meat but my girlfriend is a vegetarian this place was great for both of us. She enjoyed a pumpkin risotto for her meal while I was incredibly impressed with the lobster risotto. The risotto was cooked perfectly and there was plenty of lobster meat including two nicely sized tails placed on top. Highly recommended! Pros: amazing food Cons: very tight seating more

Great cheese, high prices, mediocre service 1/27/2008

Went for the fondue, but not everyone was partaking-- so we had different appetizers, and a couple of people had entrees. But absolutely everything came out at a different time and we ended up watching each other eat, never at the same time. The meal took over an hour longer than it ought to, and though it started off busy when we were seated, it was nearly empty when we were through, so there was no reason for the ridiculous waits. The waitress seemed unconcerned with our displeasure. Pros: Great cheese, fantastic wine list, good for brunch Cons: Service more

Not what it used to be 1/16/2008

This was by far my favorite restaurant in NY at one point, but has sadly become less enjoyable. Surprisingly, however, as the food has become less enjoyable, the service (hostess and waitstaff) have become better. The seafood tower was once the best in town, now would not make anyone top 20 list. The wine list is still wonderful, lots of options and reasonable,(although not cheap) prices. Fondue is always a good bet. I still enjoy going for the cheese, the decor and the general ambiance, however, it unfortunately, has lost some of what had made it so great in the past. Pros: CHEESE AND WINE Cons: Price, Seafood platter more

Poor effort from the kitchen - good cheese though 1/10/2008

A recent meal here was disappointing and in my opinion was a terrible price/value ratio. Although the cheeses were excellent, they obviously don't make the cheese. Its not difficult to cut cheese and plate it. I thought the snails were like rubber and I returned my dish since it came well done, and i ordered it med rare. It wasn't even close to being edible food, and for $32, this entree was a joke portion-wise. The service was spotty at best. I would return only for the cheese and nothing else, but then again, I'd rather buy cheese from Murray's and eat it at home. Pros: cheese Cons: service, food, value more

Don't even bother... 12/30/2007

Had Sunday prix fixe brunch ($25). That was a huge mistake. I should've known as soon as I walked into the restaurant where the tables were adorned with white paper on top of perfectly good tablecloth. Apparently the restaurant doesn't want to change the tablecloth so they resort to covering it with white paper. How original. Either have tablecloth or don't have it. Don't insult customers by having them dine on paper. Cons: Food taste, food temperature, service, waitress more

Great dinner! 9/21/2007

I went here for a birthday (and while it was pricey...$500 for five people)...the food was amazing and the service was even better. Our waitress was sweet and helpful, the fondue was excellent...she helped us pick two perfect bottles of wine. I had the hangar steak which melted in your mouth, but the pork chop tasted even better. For dessert, we all shared the chocolate tart, the cheese cake and the creme brulee. The restaurant was really loud (we had to shout to hear each other)...so it was not ideal for a romantic date, but I would highly recommend it!! Pros: food, service Cons: loud more
