Amazing! 7/28/2007

I had my best New York City meal here. The fondue is to die for, the risotto is great, and the cheesecake is the BEST I've ever had in my life. Not too thick, not to creamy, just perfect. The service is great and the staff is very friendly and helpful. GO!! more

Overrated 7/15/2007

Thought I'd try this place, since I always hear rave reviews about it. I'm not a huge fan of cheese, so perhaps it wasn't the best choice of restaurants. We ordered the Parmesan Gnocchi - not too impressed with the gnocci, too doughy, and just wasn't doing it for me. The Artisanal Ricotta was over salted. The Prime Hanger Steak Frites did come out perfect, and they were very nice about altering my order slightly not to include fries. Overall- the service was great, food just didn't impress. more

Service, anyone? 6/27/2007

A year ago, I would have given this place a good review, but it seems as though the serive has declined since then (which was a HUGE disappointment). My last visit there about a month ago and the service was horrendous. My friends and I had reservations and arrived at the restaurant on time. Two couples walked in after us, with no reservations, and were seated before us. After finally being seated, we were at our table for 15 minutes without any one so much as acknowledging we were there. At one point, one of my friends actually got up to get us menus. Several waitors saw this, snickered, and then continued to ignore us. We left after about 10 minutes. It was a shame because I was really looking forward to their crepes, which are actually VERY good. Go to Artisinal ONLY if you don't mind having walk-ins taken before you (even when you have an reservation), being ignored for a half-hour, and having to deal with RUDE wait staff. Pros: Good cheese, great crepes Cons: Rude wait staff who ignore patrons, long waits (even with reservations) more

Great Service.......even behind the sweat. 5/28/2007

I had dinner at Artisanal last night with my boyfriend, he's been out of town so we being the cheese lovers we are thought we should give the mecca a shot. We were sat fast and greeted by a warm smiling server even faster. And when I say warm I mean glistening, bright red warm. The restaurant must have been 80 degrees! My poor boyfriend was so uncomfortable that he could barely enjoy his Duck. Which was a good recomendation by our server. I just can't get over how physically uncomfortable we really were. It seems like such a shame for a restaurant that could be my favorite in New York fall short because someone is afraid to use the AC. Pros: service from the moment you walk in Cons: hottest, sweatiest restaurant in NYC more

excellent cheese selection, good bistrot fare 5/28/2007

I recently visited Artisanal for dinner to celebrate one of my best friend's daughter's graduate school matriculation. We were seated promptly and although the restaurant was very busy and our waiter very distracted, the service was good (especially when they realized that we were ordering expensive bottles). At one point I asked the sommelier to be sent to my table to discuss the list with him, and regretfully, he simply chose not to come (even though he was in the restaurant). Luckily our waiter knew the list well and when I asked his recommendation, he admitted that he hadn't tasted some of the wines on the list but did point out a wine (from Southern Rhone) that he thought I would like based on what I had ordered previously. It was a great recommendation and for the last bottle we ordered a 1997 Barbaresco from the reserve list that everyone enjoyed immensely with the superb cheese selection. At the end, one of the cheese mongers came over to our table to talk about the selection. He was very young but extremely knowledgeable about the cheeses and how they were made. We had a great time and it was a great way to celebrate. All in all I would highly recommend except for the sommelier. The wine list is good and every wine -- it seems -- is served by the glass but the list doesn't really have any ""strong points"" (although I would like to return to taste the Swiss wines on the list -- very unusual). Pros: excellent cheese selection, interesting wine list Cons: loud room more

Excellent food and great service! 4/30/2007

This restaurant serves excellent food. Do not miss the fondue nor the macaroni & cheese. Service is good - waiters give good recommendations, and the food comes quickly. Ambience is nice, especially during dinner. more

Everything A Great NYC Restaurant Should Be 4/6/2007

Just had my 2 millionth (only a slight exaggeration) great meal at Artisinal. I have been going here since it opened and can ALWAYS depend on having a delicious, fun and well served experience. The great thing is that you don't have to be a cheese lover to find fabulous dishes on their menu. (Although if you are you'll be in fromage heaven !!). I have repeatedlyl taken clients here for lunches, dinners and brunches and have made Artisinal believers out of them too. The fondues are particularly delicious. Whether is the cheese version or the chocolate dessert version (worth every sinful calorie). They have the City's best cassoulet, and the duck and hangar steak are delicious. Pros: Service, Ambience, Food more

Bistro Heaven 4/5/2007

Referring to Artisinal as a ""Mecca for cheese lovers"" is doing this wonderful restaurant a disservice. It's much more than that. It's a Mecca for anyone who appreciates fine French bistro cuisine. The Dover sole is the best I've had anywhere. The cassoulet made me feel like I was back in Paris. And the assorted appetizer plates are a must. In fact, Artisinal itself is a must. Pros: Food, service, ambience, value. Cons: Noise level more

Will Not Be Back 4/3/2007

My first experience at Artisanal was commendable. Great food, service, and ambiance. I had some friends in town so I though this would be a nice place to take them and made a reservation for 7 people for Friday night. Immediately I could tell the service would be lacking. Could that have to do with the fact that gratuity would already be added to the bill? My friends and I like to enjoy a relaxing dinner but it took over 3 hours for us to eat and pay the bill which was due primarily to the slow service we received. We waited at least 20 minutes for 3 desserts to come out and another 20 minutes after we were done eating for the bill to come. AND THE RESTAURANT WAS CLOSE TO EMPTY AT THAT POINT! Cons: poor service, below average food, not a good value more

How do you go here and order a steak and french fries? 3/14/2007

This is like cheese heaven. They even have a cheese cave, similar to Batman's only it smells more. We were early, sat at the bar and ordered some interesting beers, the stout was poured with like 4 inches of head, I was about to complain, but immediately the bartender apologized and poured me another full glass to top it off. We started with the cheese and wine pairings I got the something something blues, which I thought the first one went bad really really strong flavor. To the waitresses' credit she tried to steer me away from this one but I insisted, I enjoyed def an experience. Then to a small fondue with steak (delicious) kielbasa (I thought it was great) and apples (the absolute best) plenty of food with a bottle of wine and then the chocolate fondue for dessert. I thought it was a pretty good meal, my gf thought she went into wine a cheese nirvana. It was worth it just to see her enjoy it so much. We will definitely be back. Pros: not too expensive, fondue was very good reservations through open table Cons: dessert was ehh. service could have been a little better more

All in all a good experience 2/27/2007

We showed up for reservations early and got a chance to sit at the bar, get a glass of wine, and go over to the cheese shop and sample some very nice cheeses. At our table the food was good. Nice flavor for the fondue and that was a treat. The main entree had good flavor, Hanger Steak, but the rest of the sides were so so. I was with a crowd that are all in the catering industry. My father owns a company, I have been working in the food industry for 8 years, and 2 others that we were with are partners with a New York catering company...so we are pretty particular about food, presentation, and service. The presentation sucked. I mean aweful. When you go you are there strictly for flavor. The service was average, they treated us well (we were dropping some money with 10 people), the food was above average with great flavors, but plate presentation was totally lacking. I will go back, but probably just for a beginner course, fondue, then move on to another restaraunt to wow a date with the entree. Pros: Great cheeses, good food Cons: Plate presentation is not stunning! more

Great cheese, wine, service and atmosphere - at a HEAVY cost! 2/16/2007

This place is all about ""cheese and wine"". Fondue is Fondue - you can get that anywhere - so I wouldnt say come here for that... (unless thats what you and your friends are into in which case I would say definitely make sure you try the wines (they have a very well rounded selection). Pros: Cheese, wine selection, friendly service, atmosphere Cons: Super Expensive, ""non-cheese"" food mediocre, smells like dirty feet more

I love cheese and I loved eating it here. 2/15/2007

(site @ artisanalbistro ""dot"" com) If you've read about how the place smells of cheese, it's not a lie. Once you open the door, the overwhelming cheesy air hits you. If you don't like the smell of cheese, then you're in the wrong place. From the moment my date and I stepped into the restaurant we were greeted by the hostess. I've been here twice and both times, I've left very satisfied, full of cheese fondue. I haven't ever had dessert here because I've always been so full. Recently I tried the cheese tastings paired with wine. I had the Ancient Tradition (Manchego, Sbrinz, Roquefort) and my date had the Magic of Blues (Blu del Moncenisio, Bleu de Basques, Bayley Hazen). I loved all my cheeses and the wines that were paired with them. The blue cheeses though, we didn't like the Blue de Basques. There was an after taste that lingered in a way you didn't want cheese to linger. After the tasting we dove straight into the Classic Swiss Fondue with Kielbasa and apples to balance the saltiness. It was perfect. Though our waitress was a bit flighty, she warmed up to us after a bit. After chatting she had said she was on her 10th hour at work. I guess it's a reason. But the goodness of the cheese overpowered the flighty waitress. The other times I've been here, the service has been top notch. Pros: cheese fondue more

Best Fondue in the city! 2/11/2007

My Hubby and I love Artisanal; it is one of our favorite restaurants--and we're going to Valentine's Day this coming Friday (instead of on Wednesday). I just read some of the reviews from restaurant week and was really surprised at how negative they were and decided to write because I disagree so strongly. If their air conditioning was broken, why would you stay? We had reservations on 7/11 and decided to go someplace else because who can eat cheese when it is that warm inside? We told the manager and he said to remind them the next time we went. We went back for our anniversary, reminded them that we left due to the air conditioning problem over the summer, and they went above and beyond in making us happy--They seated us right away even though we were early for our reservation, then they sent over complimentary glasses of champagne, even made us these delicious cheese and potato tarts (that I've never seen on the menu, but were really, really exceptional), and sent dessert over on the house as well. The service was outstanding--and truth be told, it always is. Yes it is a little loud, but that is the type of restaurant it is! I've recommended Artisanal to friends and family members and everyone says the same thing--best fondue they've ever had (try the Stilton!). Pros: The fondue is amazing and so is the service! Cons: Expect it to be a little loud--the restaurant is a wide open space. more

great fromagerie 1/15/2007

Ok. None of the staff seemed to be french, but that's ok they seemed to know what they are talking about. Pros: nice staff , no atitude Cons: pricey wine by the glass more

Avoid Brunch 12/19/2006

We have been to Artisanal for dinner many times, and had good experiences. Recently, we took several out-of-town guests for brunch and were shocked at the chaotic atmosphere and nonexistent service. Many tables were expanded from square 4-tops to circular 5 or 6-tops, hence walking through the dining room entailed brushing up against other diners, and getting knocked into with chairs and coats when anyone came/went, had food arrive at their table, etc. If you would like to feel like a tourist and/or cattle, brunch is apparantly the time to visit Artisanal. Additionally, the staff was overwhelmed, unattentive and clearly had a low level of interest in their brunch clients. Every time we wanted to order, request more water, coffee refills, get the check, I had to twist around and specifically hail the water to our table (ironic since I was sitting so close to the order-input and busing station that I could have practically done both jobs myself). I STRONGLY suggest that anyone who considers themselves a New Yorker and/or enjoys a nice, relaxing meal, AVOID Artisanal for brunch at all cost. Pros: Cheese Selection, Fondue Cons: Service, Brunch Environment more
