The Irving Penn photography exhibit at the National Gallery is candy for your aesthetic bone. The exhibit takes place in about four rooms filled with black and white portraits all taken in front of a simple curtain backdrop with few props. Penn uses the spareness of his set to illuminate his subjects, artistic icons like Picasso and Tennessee Williams, Hell Angels from San Francisco in the sixties, and New Guinea warriors in full war paint. The intensity of the images are disarming but seem playful and proud, pulling you in invitingly. His other photographs include cigeratte butts and other trash he assembles in makeshift sculpture. It is all beautiful. You leave in love, even with the trash.

When Heller's re-opened after their desperately needed renovation, I was jubilant. Then, I was on guard: how could I enjoy a new cute bakery in my neighborhood and not eat a pudding stuffed pastry everyday? To solve my dilemma, I decided to only buy small confections when I went in on the weekends to get my coffee. In truth, in my many months of sampling, none of the treats have blown me away. Perhaps it's because the treats get better as they get bigger.

I've been looking for this book: it's got red-hot searing romance, terrible unpredictable tragedy, then layers of tragedy, a WWII retreat painted in full bleak detail, and family blown apart before sorta coming back together. Even though the summer is only half over, I know this is as good as it's going to get.

Project Northstar provides tutoring for students in long-term temporary housing in Washington, DC. Tutoring takes place for about two hours a night most days of the week at six sites around the city. You can pick which site is most convenient for you. Best part is -- Project Northstar works hard to empower the students and incorporates the tutors to create a close-knit, supportive community that the kids seem to really respond to. I've been tutoring there for six months. It's been hard at the times I didn't know how to deal with misbehaving kids, but the staff of Project Northstar was always super helpful. I very much recommend it.

Astor has several qualities that I like in a restaurant and see rarely in DC: it's cheap, has outdoor seating, and is relatively healthy food. During my only visit to Astor, I had a Greek salad with gyro meat on top. It cost seven bucks, and fed two of us until we were stuffed. All the tables inside and outside of this small Mediterranean restaurant were full. The other happy-looking customers were mostly eating plates of that had salads, hummus, and slow-roasted meats. Astor is a great option when you want to eat a good meal in Adams Morgan and don't want to spend your dough.

Penang serves a three course lunch special for $9.95 with delightfully hearty portions, soup, and a choice of chicken satays, spring rolls or shrimp. The courses came quickly, with my bowl of soup almost beating me to the table. The servers were efficient at each stage of the meal, and present without being invasive. Outside seating at tables under large umbrellas was very comfortable and tucked into the Dupont Circle sidewalk traffic, yet removed enough from its frenetic pace to enjoy tasty Malaysian food.

I love Dos Gringos mostly because it's straight up and laid back -- the food is fresh and simple, the layout is fairly shapeless in the style of college coffee shops, and -- after my heart -- it's cheap. But the genius lies in the basement, which they use as an ice cream store. Unlike some other independent ice cream shops I've tried, Dos G's has perfected texture, flavor, and the dose of unexpected flavors you expect from small joints. This is the place you want to get your mega-wobbly piled-high cones for summer lovin.

The WNBA is a great spectator experience. I first got hooked in Seattle, but the Mystics have proven to be just as delightful to watch, if not as affordable (I don't heart the MCI center). Somehow, a sport that is played by intense, scrappy, sharp-shooting players fosters an appreciative audience. That audience, which routinely speckles in about half of the MCI center's lower bowls, will all be entirely on their feet at some in the game, whether or not it's the third quarter in the first game of the year or the playoffs. The fun-loving atmosphere of the WNBA is contagious; I suggest you check it out.

Tucked into Rock Creek Park at 16th and Colorado, the bowl of Carter Barron sinks beneath the canopy of trees to set an extremely soothing musical or theatrical experience. The amphitheater is huge -- getting a seat shouldn't be your concern for the free events hosted there periodically throughout the summer -- just getting a seat close enough to see the stage.
