On The Border -- Mexican Grill Cantina 1/1/2007

Today is the first day that we've been out of the neighborhood since the second blizzard within a week. We were driving around looking at houses for sale that we had seen on a website. We were starting to get hungry so we decided to pick someplace we hadn't been in awhile .. we both were hungry for Mexican Food. We stopped at one called "On The Border." Now, I know we've eaten at them before, they are a chain but I remember them being pretty good. We make our way into the place, get seated and given a menu. I LOVE Enchiladas and since it had been like "forever" .. that was my choice. The Combo .. was your choice, 2, 3 or 4 .. you select from a Taco, Enchilada, Empanda and Burito. You could get chicken or beef. I chose 2 enchiladas, hubby got the 4 combo .. and got one of each. The service was ok, not the best. They were quite busy, so we over looked a lot. We received our drinks almost immediately .. but I asked for a straw 3 times. My husband ordered an amber beer and was brought a "light" beer. Our waiter finally changed that for him. I had also asked for some extra napkins as the plates that were left for us for the chips and salsa were WET so I used my napkin to dry the plates. They brought the chips and sauce .. the sauce was a little on the "hot, spicey" side but bland, if you get the picture. The chips were extremely salty .. you could actually shake or scrape it off, it was that thick. It seemed like forever before we finally got our food. I was really looking forward to an Enchilada and it came with refried or black beans, I chose refried and it also came with Mexican Fried rice. The tortilla's they used were not cooked very much, they were extremely rubbery, and I was always used to refried beans being at least a mashed bean .. these were like a pot of boiled pinto beans, very runny and kind of tasteless. I was also used to an Enchilada having a lot of cheese in with the meat of your choice and if not in with it, then a lot on the outside .. this had a few sprinkles on top. The Mexican Rice was just rice with a little salsa and corn mixed in. At least you didn't have to guess what was in it. By the time our food was delivered to us, it was on the cold to warm side. My husband's flour tortilla was like it had not even been warmed up, uncooked. The tortilla's were rubbery and the refried beans and rice were the same as mine. My husband finally had to get up himself and go to the bar to get a couple of napkins and when our food was delivered I got my straw. I am pretty sure we had eaten there before when the food was GOOD or I would not have chosen to eat there again. It was either that they have changed the ingredients in their food items or they have a terrible chef/cook. I would only give On The Border 2 Stars, at best. We joked that they didn't say "which Border" .. maybe "on the border of mediocore to bad?" more
