Most people don’t know that the Maui and Big Island Toyota dealers are NOT part of the Servco family. Therefore, a buyer can get a better deal there. I’ve personally purchased two cars from Maui to my satisfaction. The dealership is run by a father – son team, Damien Sr, and Damien Jr, Farias. My first car was shipped from Maui, and my second one was drawn out of the Honolulu Servco warehouse, where Damien Sr. put Maui plates on it. Optional documentation fees on Maui are significantly lower than Oahu (or should I say, Servco’s). The only drawback is that Maui was not able to sell me a Servco extended warranty.

I’d never thought I’d be shopping at Sleepland on the corner of Kapiolani and Piikoi. But after 20 years, our mattress was on it’s last leg and it was time for a new one. The sales staff at Sleepland was very professional and knowledgeable. They knew the differences between the different models and insisted that we lie on the mattresses for several minutes to test out the comfort. I have now realized that most people just lie on their backs to test out the mattresses; we should have layed on our backs, left sides and right sides. This hint will help you pick the best mattress because your shoulders and hips endure lots of pressure when sleeping on your side.

We used to go to the pho restaurant on River street – the one with the long line. Their flavor of the soup was intense and complex. However, over the last year, as costs have risen, they have begun using tougher cuts of meat, making it almost impossible to bite or chew on.
Enter Pho 97, located on Maunakea street, between Pauahi and Hotel streets. The restaurant is just big enough to accommodate their clientele without long lines. Their soup stock is also rich and flavorful; maybe just a tad less flavorful compared to the River Street restaurant, but just as satisfying. Of course, their meat is soft and lean, perfect for dipping into the steaming bowls of soup. Their menu also boasts many other dishes – everything from vermicelli rice noodle dishes to fried rice to spring rolls. This will satisfy the local palate.

Mr. Lee, of Lee’s bakery used to work at the old Deelite Bakery in Kalihi. He left and opened his own bakery in Chinatown. There, his bakery makes the best custard pies in town. His custard pie is heavy, smooth, rich and thick. You have to call to reserve one; otherwise, you’ll have to wait for the next batch, which takes a couple of hours. The bakery is located on King Street, past Oahu Market, on the makai side of the street.

What’s guri guri? It’s a sherbet like frozen dessert, mixed with a bit more cream and some other secret ingredients. What results is a semi solid sherbet that is served into small paper cups. It comes in two flavors, strawberry and pineapple. Both taste like the artificial flavors, but are refreshingly satisfying. Order two scoops of one flavor or get a combination of both.
The Tasaka Guri Guri shop has just one store, located on Maui. Stop by after to you arrive on Maui, or stop by before leaving Maui. It’s a stone’s throw from the airport. Neighbor island visitors can call in and have quarts of the dessert packed and frozen solid. This will last approximately 90 minutes, so you’ll have to plan carefully.

The pizza is great, the ambiance is awful. We’ve been searching for a pizza place, but not one of those from a chain. We’ve eaten so much pizza from the pizza chains so that we were craving for an original shop. An internet search turned up the Harbor Pub & Pizza shop. One of the reviews mentioned that it was kid friendly. It was okay.
If you’ve been to the Chart House restaurant in the Ilikai Marina, then you know where the Harbor Pub & Pizza shop is. It is directly under the Chart House. I’m saying this in both a literal and a figurative way, for the booths, carpet, lighting, bathrooms, and everything else seems that they were hand-me-downs from the Chart House. Patrons have to walk through the bar to enter the restaurant, and everyone there is smoking. After walking through the cloud of smoke, you are seated in old leather booths. Bathrooms are old, smelly and dirty, but the pizza is good. I’d order their pizza again, but I’d definitely take it out.

We go to Kincaids a lot! Most of the time, it's to sit in their lounge during happy hour, which lasts till 7 pm. You don't need a reservation so it accommodates those "spur of the moment" cravings. They usually have a least 8 draft beers on tap. My favorite is the Kincaid amber, which is brewed in Washington. 16 oz. pints during happy hour are less than $3. Pupus are also half priced during happy hour. Choose from their famous hot dungeness crab appetizer to shrimp towers to clams, teriyaki sticks, etc.
Dinner in the dining room requires reservations. Select from fresh fish dishes prepared differently each day. They also have prime rib, chops, great crab cakes, nice salads, and great desserts. When you call in for reservations, ask for a window table if possible. Free parking at the Ward Warehouse.

Gulick Delicatessen is a large okazuya style take out place. I haven't been to all of the okazuyas in town, but this has to be one of the largest. Street parking is a premium on weekends as locals flock to pick up food for parties and picnics. Once you enter, the line forms to the left of the store. When you are finally at the front, the noodles (chow fun or chow mein) are your first choices. Everything is ala carte, so choose from at least 20 different dishes, from different types of tempura, chicken, an assortment of stir fries and fish dishes. At the end of the counter, they have all of their musubi's (onigiri) with your choice of ume, shiso, plain, spam, and inari.
If you've never been there, don't open your eyes too wide, because you'll be walking out with a lot of food!

I love the baked char siu manapuas at Royal Kitchen. Call in a phone order and head over to the cultural plaza. Fully validated parking is offered in the back of the shop. When you get there, you’ll be guaranteed to get hot fresh manapuas that will satisfy your hunger. They also serve other types of fillings such as chicken curry and lup cheong, but the traditional char siu is my favorite. The filling is pure char siu, with no fillers. This creates the natural sweetness in the manapua. Royal Kitchen also serves other Chinese dishes such as dim sum and noodles. These tend to be more on the average side and don’t sell as well.
