A living illustration of why monopolies are evil 7/17/2010

Without any local alternatives, this outdated facility thrives in an area not accustomed to a quality theater experience. Sound quality is generally poor. On a few screens the audio is passable but blows out during loud scenes. Even on the screens equipped with allowable sound it still seems muffled and not setup correctly - meaning the balances / mix between the front channels, LFE and surround speakers is annoying. The theater is older and the ambiance and amenities reflect this. Seats are not plush and becoming uncomfortable. While the management maintains a relatively clean establishment, the theater rooms have a musty smell and of course the floors stick. One night my wife and I went to see a movie listed at a certain time only to realize that a more popular movie had replaced our time. This was decided only hours before our movie started on a Friday night. I can not explain to you the annoyance that in a community with one theater with 14 screens that 5 are relegated to a Twilight film. This area never receives regional, limited run or indy films. The only motive with Regal, at least in Gastonia, is profit. Obviously. But does that really surprise you about Gastonia? Or Regal? I mean, we are talking about a region wholly gasping for even a faint breath of cultural influence or character beyond what is stereotypical of southern backwoods folk portrayed in mass media. So is it really the communities fault we lack any real offering that provides the privileged of some diversity in at least the movies that come to town. Or is this an art imitating life imitating art kind of a thing. Is there any other conclusion than that of the big wigs up at the Ivory Tower of Regal Entertainment feed these blue collar Gastonians the slop that only a redneck mass appreciates? Pros: This theater is only 20 minutes from better options Cons: Too many to list, outdated without refleciton in the price more
