I don't know how I never knew about this place until after I moved out of Georgetown. Their Swiss Honey Malt is to die for, and the prices are great! They have a variety of traditional and nontraditional flavors, as well as frozen yogurt and coffee drinks. While Thomas Sweet remains the place to go because of their mix-ins, if you just want a simple scoop of ice cream, try Max's.

Mention the name Ben & Jerry's to any ice cream lover and watch her drool down the front of her shirt. At least, this always happens to me, so when I learned that there was a Ben & Jerry's conveniently located in Union Station, wild horses couldn't have kept me away.
Although only a small storefront with a walk-up counter, this location is no less funky than larger full-service Ben & Jerry's locations. Bright colors and fun signs hanging and propped everywhere contribute greatly to the atmosphere, and the aroma of freshly baked waffle cones fills the air in front of the shop.
A huge menu of flavors - all with fun names such as Cherry Garcia, Chunky Monkey and Chubby Hubby - hangs on the wall behind the counter, as well as descriptions of different cone configurations (new to this spot was a nifty side-by-side double cone for those who just couldn't pick one flavor and didn't want them stacked precariously atop one another.) Shakes, frozen coffee drinks and sodas are also available here.
Although this is a very popular spot - especially during peak hours - the staff did an excellent job of moving the line right along. Because it's located directly across from the Amtrak station, there were several instances when Amtrak traffic and Ben & Jerry's customers collided, but hey, it's all worth it for the ice cream.
PROS: It's Ben & Jerry's!! The best ice cream on earth, bar none.
CONS: Crowding.

Located right in Foggy Bottom, this Ice Cream shop is tops in the area. With a nice variety of rotating flavors, and the fro-yo option, and the soft serve option, and the many toppings... sprinkles, cookie crisps, cherries, whipped cream.... I am getting hungry just writing this review.
If you want better than the chains, and don't want to stray far from Foggy Bottom, this is the place to pick up a scoop... or two.. or three

I went with a group of girls, one of whom is allergic to peanuts. She ordered chocolate mint ice cream. It had a peanut in it and when I went back to complain they responded that all their ice cream has peanuts. After calling the national firm they indicated that, of course, this establishment was wrong. The national office sent free coupons, the local establishment offerred nothing, although they did give a refund after I asked for one.
