Nickle & dime us! 8/26/2011

After all the raves about this place I had to check it out. Yes the burger is tasty, and the fries.... but EVERYTHING is freaking EXTRA.... cheese, guac, mushrooms, fries!!! I am surprised they didn't charge for the bun and the ketchup! If you are not a fan of being center of attention when they call you order which could be ""HotLips Houlihan"" or some other character from an old sitcom you may find it amusing... otherwise, embarrassing. \r \r They also have weird rules about what door you can enter to place the order and another door to pick up the order!! With all this craziness and extra charges I will GLADLY walk over to ANGRY DOG and BE SERVED at my table and not be charged for everything and have an even BETTER BURGER AND FRIES! And hey... good thing Dallas has lots of options in this realm of greasy goodness.\r more

Good food 6/28/2011

The food is good but a bit pricey to me. It can be a bit noisy during the busy times but most places are. I really like the decor. Guess I'm still a ""hair-band' junky at heart! :) more

Good burgers but service needs to be improved upon 11/29/2010

I like the burgers. They are meaty and juicy and they taste really good. The only problem I have is with the waitstaff. They seem bored and rude and looks like they just can't wait for me to finish and get out of there. If you can ignore the staff, it really does taste good and it's worth a shot. more

Yum! 11/18/2010

Best burger ever! I recommend the buffalo with jalapeno, blue cheese and bacon along with the fried pickles. Plus they called me Penelope Cruz-fun fun place! more

Overpriced food ,Rude staff, Music was too loud 7/2/2010

My wife and I went into Twisted Root after seeing it on DDD. and boy were we dissapointed big time! 1. Parking - pay 2 bucks to park in their parking lot (5 bucks on weekends) or pay a meter. Aside from that the parking lot looks like a garbage dump; trash and broken bottles EVERYWHERE...so be careful if you do go there to not get a flat. 2. Staff - Extremely rude, not helpful at all...Heck, they had no idea what they were doing....lol 3. Food - way overpriced for what you get....Where to begin....Lets see for starters the onion strings are terrible. They give you thin measly strips of onion and the batter just falls right off it..Total fail The fries were ok at best....Just your basic pre-packaged curly fries....nothing special Fried pickles had a real sour taste to them, wouldn't recommend them. The fried green beans are ""ok"" Now, for the burgers.... The burgers were again ""ok"" at best.......Not really flavorful at all and kinda dry......My wife has a blu cheese burger and all it was; was blu cheese salad dressing on top of a patty...Not a REAL blu cheese burger... I had a cheddar burger and same thing, just ""ok"" Way way way way way overpriced for what you get......kinda sad really 4. Atmosphere - loud music, bumper stickers all over the walls....Looked kinda cool.. Music was way to loud, everyone was complaining about it.....Gave both of us a headache ** oh yeah almost forgot these guys charge gratuity without asking you, even if its for one person!! In conclusion if you want to go out and have a burger and see downtown dallas go to the ANGRY DOG...its right down the street from twisted root and much better prices/quality all around. Pros: Down the street from angry dog Cons: Everything more

Be prepared to fight. 6/19/2010

The location I visited was in downtown Dallas. \r This place has a sprit of Satan about it. Christians - be warned. You will not like it here, and if you do and think you are a Christian, then chances are you need to check yourself cause the enemy has neutralized you. \r Here are some details from my experince:\r Parking - I'm not sure what the sketchy guy across the street was yelling about when I was getting out of the metered spot I parked in - but it still had 37 minutes on the meter and I thought that would be enough time and I just ignored him. I don't appreciate people yelling unintelligible things to me - not a great way to welcome your customers. Red Flag #3. #2 was having toruble finding this place on my garmin and 1 was the websites history that states this place was started in part by a rude worker cursing at a customer. \r #4 was the obnoxiously loud music which only exacerbated my wife's headache. The wait in line was too long - I felt truly sorry for the customers who came in after us - after the rush. I only had 2 people in front of me - 10 minute wait. But when I left there was a line out the door. \r They did not properly advertise their meat patty selection - such as ostrich and stuff. \r The order taker got the order wrong - I got 2 burgers, one of them being a double - rather than 3 single patty burgers. The guy handing otu the food was nice about that though - he looks very mellow - like he's not unfamiliar with other twisted roots (and/or leaves).\r The place was a downtown bar - like the kind I used to go clubbing at. Not very friendly and you have to fight to get your due. Fight for a clean table, the restroom, to be heard, your order, your way in, your parking, etc. Not a great place to take kids. \r Food was OK but the sides were too greasy. I agree with most of the lower star reviews on the food quality. I like home made food, but I could do 2 burger ans 5 sides for way less than $32 at home and be of the same or better quality (I'm a good cook though). \r Alas, because of that Satanic spirit which I didn't recognize until later, you couldn't pay me to go back. Pros: Ice cream shakes with liquor Cons: Parking, greasy ""roots"", Satanic spirit in the place more

Burgers YUM! 5/24/2010

Love the burgers!!!! Pros: Food more

Overrated, Overpriced, Underwhelmed 5/20/2010

Twisted Root is yet another example of an attempt to shrewdly market what is deceptively average quality and manufacturing an atmosphere with signage that pretends to suggest some kind of ""history"" in the place or the ""worn, urban"" look. What they serve is a three dollar burger that they charge over five dollars for. If you want anything on it other than lettuce tomato and onion, you have to pay 75 cents per topping. They also season this burger with some kind of pepper that does nothing for it. The fries are also average and overpriced. For all of you who have said this is the best burger you have ever had, I feel sorry for you. Go to Five Guys. You will get a far better burger with more meat on it at a lower price with all toppings included. Five guys is literally the best burger out there and if you don't agree you are probably lying and work for one of their competitors. Cons: See details more

Great Burgers and Atmosphere! 1/2/2010

I love the burgers here. I decided to try them after they made the Top 50 list in the Texas Monthly magazine. My husband and I are determined to try all 50 burgers and so far, this has been our favorite. The only negative is the inconsistency in food quality and mediocre service. I live in Houston but will travel to Dallas on the weekend just to get a burger from this place. Sometimes when I come, the lettuce and tomatoes are soggy and the fries are cold; while others the food is perfect. You can tell that the staff doesn't like complaints so I often will just keep the food even when it is of poor quality. After driving all the way to Dallas to eat here, I would really appreciate hot and fresh food because it cost me a heck of a lot more to eat this burger than what the staff is aware of. I am sure many people are going through extra lengths to patronize this establishment due to the Texas Monthly article. If they would focus more on consistent food quality and friendlier service, they would have a 5 star establishment in my opinion. Pros: Good Food, Homemade Sauce, Great Atmosphere! Cons: Service, Inconsistent Food Quality more

good but second to.......... 11/6/2009

My friends and I decided to find the best burger in Dallas. TWBC came in a close second however Angry Dog was a favorite with all. \r \r TWBC has unique burgers but when it came down to the meat the AD was more juicy.\r \r Both give you a lot for your money. Good deals!! Pros: fresh Cons: busy more

Good food but bad service 6/21/2009

Heard about this place on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives on the Food Channel. On a recent trip to Dallas for a visit went to this place on a Friday night. Line was out the door and took approx 45 minutes to get through and place our order. Bar would not serve anybody until reached end of line so couldn't drink a beer while we waited in line. Burger was ordered medium rare and came out medium well. Ordered a bucket of beer and it came to the table iced down but was only cool at best. Had to wait another 30 minutes for beer to get cold. Would not go back. Pros: Good quality meat in burger Cons: Staff on Friday night unable to handle crowd more

What's All the Hype About? 6/9/2009

My wife and I had read nothing but good things about the Twisted Root Burger Co. (in Deep Ellum), and being self-proclaimed burger connoisseurs, we were really excited to check it out. They've been nominated for best burger, best fries, best onion rings, and best restaurant value in Dallas, by several publications and websites. Unfortunately, on our visit, they didn't live up to the praise that they so often receive.\r \r First let me start by saying that I did like the atmosphere. Housed in a vintage building in Deep Ellum, just up Commerce from the old Copper Tank Brewery location, the interior has corrugated tin on the bar and walls, tabletops covered in bottle caps, humorous bumper stickers on the walls, hand-written chalkboard menus, and skylights, which gave the place a funky, comfy kind of feel. The staff was very friendly and accommodating and they have a full bar and a patio. Many of the menu items are made from scratch, on site, including ice cream, root beer (which had a definite sarsaparilla/licorice flavor), and pickles (we really enjoyed these). They tout their all-beef hot dogs and also serve some unique burgers such as buffalo ($7.99, always available), ostrich and venison (when in season), as well as turkey and veggie burgers. A couple of salad choices are available as well.\r \r You stand in line to order at the counter and are given a card with the ""name"" of your order printed on it. This is a little gimicky, but kind of fun, as the names on the cards are of famous people, real and fictitious. We were Walker Texas Ranger; others were Bilbo Baggins, Violet Beauregard, and Clint Eastwood. The staff has a good time, throwing in a few ad libs, while calling these out and occasionally get a few laughs from some of the other diners. \r \r We were there at 1:00 pm on Saturday and by 1:15, the line was out the door, but they keep it moving pretty quickly. I ordered the cheddar burger ($5.49) with fries ($1.99) and Lisa had the peppercorn ranch and bacon burger ($6.99) with onion rings ($2.99). The burgers, served in red plastic baskets, had nice presentation, even though the order of non-crispy curly fries was pretty small for the price (I'm not a big fan of curly fries anyway). However, Lisa's onion rings were pretty darn good, for thick rings, as Lisa and I typically prefer thin. In fact, the crusty, golden, crunchy rings were sweet and flavorful. There were a number of house made condiments, besides the basics, on the table, including a barbecue sauce, horseradish dijon mustard, and a chipotle ketchup. We found the mustard to be very good.\r \r The burgers are served on sesame seed buns, which were dry on top and a bit soggy on the bottom. The meat patties were 1/2"" thick, hand-formed, and come cooked medium-well to well, which made them pretty dry. They also had no real noticeable seasoning. The bacon on Lisa's burger was crisp, but the peppercorn ranch was a little watery and made the rest of the burger soggy. She wasn't able to finish hers, and she's a real hamburger nut.\r \r Overall, a fairly disappointing experience. With Adair's and Angry Dog right across the street, they've picked a tough neighborhood in which to sell a mediocre burger. The search for the best burger in Dallas continues. Pros: Onion Rings, Ice Cream, Sweet Potato Fries, Pickles, Staff Cons: The Burgers And Pretty Much Everything Else more

stood in a long line in the rain!! 5/16/2009

While driving down Commerce on a rainy Saturday afternoon my husband and I noticed this long winding line of people who didn't seem to mind waiting, to get in the Twisted Root Burger Co. and seeing this I immediately wanted to eat there so we parked and the long line quickly dwindled. I don't hold the parking against them since their job is to make premium burgers not to provide premium parking for me to enjoy while I dine there. We sat at the same table with people that had two extra chairs on the end because it was very crowded and you sit where you can. This didn't bother us one bit we enjoyed each other as if it were just us two. If you are with people you enjoy you create your own ambience. People don't line up in the rain to get average food and poor service. This was the BEST burger I've ever eaten. Turkey topped with chipotle, guacamole and cheddar. Moist, tasty and delish! My husband had the Mushroom Swiss he loved it and got a big kick out of being called Darth Vader as he picked up our order. The sweet potato fries were crispy and tasty . It was so good that I wanted it again for dinner! We loved the condiments and the staff was down right giddy they were so friendly. The place is filled with great reviews in the hallway so I'm not so sure where the people with the negative reviews were eating. The long line did it for me. I'm so glad we stopped. Pros: Great food & service with a smile Cons: None!! more
