The best theater popcorn in Massachusetts 11/3/2006

Yes, you heard it here first. Step right up for the greatest theater popcorn in Massachusetts! They use *magic* on their popcorn. That, with REAL BUTTER combine to make this the most delicious popcorn this side of the Mississippi. Stop by for a bag, you don't need to see a movie to buy the popcorn. Just walk in and the refreshment counter is on the right side. If you're *very* picky about your popcorn, just ask for a sample to taste before you buy. I just love this popcorn! more

Watch it on the big screen without the big bucks 4/16/2006

The Somerville Theater, located in the heart of Davis Square is the place to go if you want to see a movie but don't want to pay $20 per person at a chain theater. It's cheap and the popcorn is fantastic. As a former employee of a movie theater, I can appreciate good popcorn and in the Somerville area, there are no other theaters that can compare in that respect. They also use real butter! Something unheard of these days! The seating is a bit uncomfortable, however. I would rate this theater 5 stars if it wasn't for the seats. I frequent this theater a few times a month and I will continue to do so despite the seating, however I would also LOVE if they put a little TLC into the seats! more

getting more expensive - but still a bargain 3/22/2006

When I first moved to Davis Sq, it cost $4.50 to see a movie. Times have changed, and so have the prices - but it's still a great place to catch a second run flick. Their concessions are definitely cheaper than the chain theaters - and the popcorn doesn't come out of a 50 gallon garbage bag that was popped sometime last year - its fresh and real and good. My only complaint about the theater is that the seats are really uncomfortable - and the projection isn't so great. They must have older machines - b/c there are always dust particles and "scratches" running up and down the margin of the screen. But, for the price, it's still a good place! more

Classic Second Run Movie Theatre 3/18/2006

Wait a few weeks and see the box office hits here for $6.50 ($4 weekdays before 6pm). Popcorn is cheap and there's a sometimes-working ice cream dispenser in the lobby. Take note of the cool owl sconces with red eyes in the corners near the ceiling and on the marquee. Also live shows here in a relatively intimate space - go to the right ticket window for those. Somerville Theatre is also home to the Independent Film Festival and the infamous Fiddler On the Roof Singalong. Indian movies show almost every week. And when the sign says No Public Bathrooms, they mean it. more

A great homey-feeling little theater! 10/15/2005

The Somerville Theater is awesome! It is very old and it capitalizes on this with its decor (either that or it has not renovated in a VERY long time!)... either way, the decor is fun and makes you feel like you are going back in time - at least to the 1950s or so. The theater is located right in the heart of Davis Square and plays mostly second run movies. They have a small concession stand and the seats cannot be compared to those in modern theaters (i.e. not very comfortable), but somehow the comfort and intimacy that the theater itself provides makes up for the uncomfortable seats. It is a rare treat to visit an old, still-independent movie theater these days and Somerville Theater certainly delivers! It is a big part of Davis Square's charm. Enjoy! more

Somerville Theater 10/12/2005

The Somerville Theater is one of the great finds in Davis Square. It's both a second-run movie theater, and a concert venue. The movie prices are lower than what you would pay at a large chain, and the movies are not so far after release that you wouldn't want to see them anymore. The live music always draws a large crowd as well. Located literally seconds away from the red line T station, it is very accessible. more

Good local Somerville place to catch a non-mainstream flick 8/3/2005

Right in the heart of Davis Square, this small theater has several smallish screens that show a mix of popular mainstream movies (e.g. The Elf played there when it came out) and more non-traditional selections. At one point, the line-up included not one but two Bollywood movies, as well as the Whalerider. It's not the best quality large screen / surround sound type of place, but it has a nice local feel, is quite popular with Somerville residents, and ... J.P. Licks ice cream is just across the street. more

Friendly second run theatre 7/5/2005

The Somerville Theatre in Davis Square offer second run movies at $6.50 regular price, $4.50 seniors and students and $4.00 weekday before 6 p.m. It has the friendliest staff and they allow you to bring food from outside if you ask nicely. It also plays Hindi movies and concerts from time to time. E.g. the Tragically Hip and Eels have played there before! more
