Ace Wheelworks has all the latest bikes, but they'll still take good care of your 1960's touring bike. There is one guy there who specifically knows the old bikes and sometimes they've held my jobs for him. They won't mess around unless they know what they're doing. I like Ace because they don't talk down to you and they'll do little jobs, like fixing a kickstand or adjusting a chain, for free. I've learned a lot going there as the employees explain what they're doing to my bike. If your three-speed needs a serious overhaul, you might want to spring for Ferris Wheels down in JP, but I have faith in Ace on this side of the river.

Sacco's Bowl Haven is a Somerville institution and it's a treat to candlepin bowl here. Both strings and shoes are cheap here, and you can ogle the old metal ashtrays still built into the end of each ball return area. There are drink and snack machines and you can, no joke, bring food to heat in their microwave. It's not glossy like Lanes and Games, but it has its own homey charm and the bowling's just as good. Can be crowded on weekends and during league games, so call ahead if you have a big group going. Read the newspaper clippings in the lobby, and note the old black and white pictures of a Sacco's way back when.

This is a great little neighborhood convenience store (perhaps inconveniently holding onto an old name that no longer describes everything offered by the store). It seems that if you were looking for snacks, lottery tickets, "smokes", small gifts, etc. This would be the place to go in Union Square. They have a selection of very inexpensive greeting cards, which are quite difficult to find these days! One drawback is that they seem to keep inconvenienct hours for those working downtown and living in Union Square, since they are often closed in the early morning and in the evening after work. It is a great little shop, though, with lots of Union Square neighborhood charm!
Enjoy!

More
Chinook is so good at fleece, hats, mittens, boots and ear warmers that one might wonder how they stay open in the summer. That's when you can get water gear, though, and Tevas and biking maps. Reliable big brands as well as some charming smaller companies. Not cheap, but not ludicrous. Look for sale items in the back. Your Brown School Community Card (see my entry on that) gets you a discount here.
