Very Disappointing meal 5/10/2010

We returned to Repast this year for Mother's Day brunch as our experience last year was outstanding. The menu was a prix fixe with a choice of 5 first courses, main dishes and dessert at $36 per person. The menu last year was innovative including tuna tartar with a quail egg, as an app and filet mignon as a main to name a couple of dishes. The food and service was excellent. The menu was so interesting that we had a hard time trying to decide what to pick. more

The Restaurant You Wanna Love?. But Just Can?t 4/11/2010

I recently went back to Repast after being a bit disappointed with my first visit about 7 months ago. Sadly my first impression was the right one as Repast is a restaurant that just doesn?t deliver on the promise that its creative, eclectic and well written menu holds for its diners. I really want to like Repast, Cher/Owner Joe Truex is a really nice guy, he regularly chats with his guests at the bar, the restaurant has a fine selection of bourbon? something that always earns points with me and as I said before, the menu has a litany of dishes that just sound outstanding. But sadly, each time I?ve been and pretty much every dish I?ve had has left me feeling that it didn?t live up to the promise I had for it. We started off with the black garlic hummus and the Japanese octopus carpaccio. The hummus was really good and easily the best of the two appetizers. It had a great garlic essence running through it that added a nice depth of flavor. The hummus had just the right amount of creaminess and was a great app for sharing and getting the meal started. The octopus carpaccio sounded far too interesting not to order. Its served with shaved onion, a fennel salad and a ponzu dressing. I?ve had Octopus numerous other times, but I?d never had it in a carpaccio style, so I was curious to try it. While the dish was good, the ponzu dressing it was served with was far too salty and just lacked a brightness from some acidity that would?ve really added a layer of flavor to the dressing and helped balance out its flavor. I think the fennel salad was supposed to provide the layer of acidity that the dish needed, but instead just added an accent of licorice to the dish, which when combined with the ponzu dressing, just didn?t work. For the entrees, we went with the crab cakes ?Repast style? served with saut?ed sesame asparagus and a yuzu caper butter and the seared sea scallops & pork belly served with roasted winter root vegetables. Now maybe its me, but if you?re going to put your name on something and claim it as your own, it should be pretty damn special and unfortunately I just didn?t have this reaction to the crab cakes at Repast. In a word, they were bland. Sadly, its not really worth saying too much more about them; there simply wasn?t much flavor and I was extremely disappointed in them. After the disappointment of the crab cakes I was ready to get my eat on with the scallops and pork belly. I mean, talk about a tantalizing dish: scallops AND pork belly on the same plate? Sign me up! But again, I was left with a mouth and stomach full of disappointment. I thought the scallops were a little overcooked and while not rubbery, were not the soft and succulent morsels that a well cooked scallop is. The pork belly was tasty, as pork belly almost always is, but I thought it lacked a bit of seasoning and didn?t shine in the way I think it could have. The roasted root vegetables, lacked the depth of flavor and sweetness that you would expect from roasted vegetables. I definitely see the concept of the dish and it seems so perfect: the sweetness and fresh ocean taste of the scallops, offset with the fattiness and ?porkiness? of the pork belly; then round the dish out with some roasted root veg to finish and damn, you?re ready to eat. On paper the combination just sounds perfect. But somewhere along the way, the flavors never developed and thus never came together. I have to say that I was extremely disappointed with my meal at Repast. Sadly the best thing we had was the hummus and if that?s the best thing on a fine dining restaurant?s menu then it?s a really bad sign. I really hope that when the menu changes Repast can get it right, because this is a restaurant that I truly want to like but based upon a pretty disappointing meal, I just can?t right now. Pros: friendly owners, cool patio, good bourbon selection Cons: a bit expencive based on enjoyment of the food more

Good food and good service 11/13/2008

We tried Repast last night for the first time. We wanted a romantic dinner for 2 to celebrate out wedding anniversary. I saw that the restaurant wasnt noted for romance so when I called to make the booking I asked if they could give us a romantic corner. The hostess was very accommodating and gave me several options, including opening up the upstairs section just for us! Pros: Service, food, repastini cocktail Cons: Hard rock music did not suit more

I LOVE repast 10/28/2008

It has been a year since last time had a dinner at repast restaurant and went back last weekend, It was Saturday night and the place was Packed with midtown crowd. We got there earlier than our reservation so had a cocktail at bar, their coktail and wine list is excellent...we had a ""repastini"" thier original ginger infused martini, loved it! had two glass each. Pros: romantic, out door patio, private room. wine list, Cons: close sunday more

Not So Great 9/2/2008

We had been looking forward to dining at Repast for a long time, and finally had a chance to visit during restaurant week. We thought this would be the perfect time to try it out assuming that they would be putting their best foot forward. My husband and I both started with the grilled halloumi cheese. It was very fresh and delicious. The entree was ok. We both ordered the special pork dish (it's not on their normal menu). It seemed like something I could have easily made at home...nothing special. The best part about the entree was the slaw and the sauce. For dessert, I ordered the cheesecake, and he ordered the warm chocolate cake. The cheesecake was excellent. The chocolate cake was ok. The worst part about our visit was parking. Half way through our meal, our waiter (who had been great up until this point) told us he'd have to abandon us for a while to help the valet move cars. Apparently, the valet had been illegally parking cars at City Hall East, and they were starting to tow. Could you imagine leaving your car with a valet at a nice restaurant, and coming out to find it had been towed?!?! Needless to say, this left a bad taste in our mouths. Our car had not been towed, but it did take the valet FOREVER to find it. I doubt we will go back. There are too many other good places in Atlanta...especially in the Inman Park area. Pros: food, martini, ambience Cons: food, parking, prices for what you get more

$20 special plus $5wine!!WOW Great deal at repast! 6/16/2008

I found out about $20 deal from web letter. since me and my husband are big fan of repast needed to try out. There is a regular munu plus $20 special menu. Pick one appetizer and an entree, you can chose from 5 dishes. I had a chicken liver mousse for an appetizer and a fish and chips for an entree. Both dishes were so delicious, the size was perfect. and $5 nice glass of white wine. Pros: food, service, ambience. price. more

Best Food in Atlanta 4/4/2008

I took a friend to Repast to celebrate a new job and it was amazing. A coworker told me to get Daniel as our server because he's really good with the wines, so we did and he was fabulous with everything. I was warned that the portions were small, but we all need to watch our portions anyways and enjoy what actually goes into a dish- herbs and spices. We had the bacon wrapped dates and they literally melted in our mouths. I had scallops and pork belly, which sounds nasty but it was soo yummy! We also ordered the salmon and it got great reviews as well. Pros: parking, chef/owner as the host Cons: closeness of the tables more

pricey, not-great food in small portions 3/27/2008

I have to agree with the negative reviews... and am confused at the enthusiasm of the positive reviews. The ambiance is nice and the service is polite and unobtrusive. But onto the food... We started with the salmon pizzette, which was ok, but too salty and bordering on the oily. We ordered pork cutlets with dried cherry sauce and citrus-mustard topping (or whatever they called it). The cherry sauce was cloyingly sweet, and clashed with the ""mustard topping."" My best description would be ""sweet and sour"" gone very bad. We also ordered the macrobiotic composition. (It should have been called ""micro macrobiotic"")... It consisted of about 3 leaves of baby bok choy, a hunk of uncooked tofu with a too-garlicky green sauce, 3 small cubes of delicious (I wish there were more) stewed kabocha squash, and a few strands of seaweed. We also ordered a side of agnolotti, which were tough on the outside (probably cooked too long). They left a dry, chalky taste in the roof of our mouth. This was our second time there . The first visit was not much better in terms of food or service (we were kept waiting for over 30 minutes past our reservation time). Both times, our stomachs and wallets left hungry, but not for more of Repast's food. Some people may love this place, but we didn't. Pros: Nice Ambience, polite service Cons: valet parking, pricey, miniature servings. more

The best restaurant 08' 3/7/2008

I have been to the repast twice this year already and every time go there we have a such a wnderful time and make us come back again . The food , service and vibes are excellent and different from all other midtown or atlanta restaurants. I don't know why people left hungry? well, repast is not an one plate dish fills you up place, it is more like casual fine dining restaurant, you go there to order appetizer, main and dessert plus cocktail and wine, so I Don't want you to expecting to go there to get an over potions one meal south style dish and sprit the dish with friend. We love to go there for Monday 1/2 price wine deal night. They got a great wine selection too. more

Outstanding Food and Service 2/29/2008

For my money, the best restaurant in Atlanta. For the serious foodie, you can't beat it. The staff makes every effort to make you feel at home and goes into great detail to explain and give recommendations. I have been here twice and look forward to the third visit. Pros: Food, Service, Joe the Chef/owner Cons: neighborhood, but parking is safe more

Small portions, high prices, food inconsistent. 2/18/2008

Very, very small portions. High prices. Unfriendly cold waiters. Food inconsistent. Strange seating. The valet service is a pain. You park far from the door. Slow to park your car if busy. Slow to retrieve your car. Charge me and let me park myself! If you go, question the size of every dish you order or you just might be very shocked at the extremely tiny serving size. more

Agreed - left hungry, food took forever to come, and way overpriced 2/16/2008

I completely agree with the review 2 below mine. I read the first review only when I found this restaurant on citysearch. I wish I had read the next review. While the atmosphere is nice (agree with below) and the service friendly (also agree on this), the food took FOREVER to come and was way overpriced for what we got. I was with 2 other people, and we all left hungry after waiting for our food for close to an hour. Scallops entree includes 2 scallops only, for example. Everything seemed really great...until the food came. With so many restaurants in Atlanta, it's hard to know which ones are actually good. After reading the other review similar to this one, I would advise anyone to add this to the list of not so good. I thought maybe we didn't order the right things, was a one time bad experience, etc. but after reading this other review, which is very similar, I think it's safe to say it's just not that great. So, I am also very confused by all the ""rave"" reviews. Overall, not that great, way overpriced for what you get, and I'm starvinvg right now! The only way I would go back is just to get a drink at the bar. Pros: Food, price, portion size, and time it takes to get food Cons: Atmosphere is cool more

Best service in atlanta 2/3/2008

We came here for my boyfriends birthday. I had made the reservation online and mentioned that it was his birthday. Upon arriving, we were seated immediately and EVERYONE on the staff who passed by stopped to offer a quick happy birthday. It was very nice. After explaining to the waiter that we were vegan, he made suggestions as to what we might enjoy and the kitchen made changes to our meals to keep with our diets. He even said to call ahead next time and they would make a vegan birthday cake for us! Overall, could not have been better. We WILL be back Pros: AMAZING service, awesome staff, incredible ambiance Cons: can't think of ONE more

Very nice ambience, left hungry 10/26/2007

I'm surprised at all the rave reviews-they are very misleading. Repast is a very nice restaurant but I think that it should also be mentioned that the portions are somewhat small for what you pay-it's ""pretty food."" It is pricey and you may leave hungry. I understand that great food and restaurants aren't usually based on portions but 4 bite-sized portions of a Halibut special for $26 is not what I consider a meal. I went with friends-all of us were first-timers there. My hanger steak came out burnt and very tough, and I wasn't about to wait another hour and 25 minutes-yes, that's right-for something else to come out. Apparently there was a mix up with our order and our food was given to the wrong table???They were nice enough to give us complimentary mini appetizers-after our own ordered one- as it was later explained that they were unexpectedly slammed and everything was crazy. This appetizer came twice, since we waited so long. The pork cutlet for $24 was also very over-priced. All that said- I highly recommend the Banana Pecan Bread Pudding for dessert. It was delicious. We waited an extremely long time overall-which the management was apologetic for-even offering free dessert for each of us. The staff was very friendly, I'll give them that, but the experience wasn't great. They were sporadic and each time they came to the table, we had to wait at least another 10 minutes before they came back. We sat down at 7:15 only to leave at 10:00 and not because we were just chillin'. We were waiting for food. The food overall was tasty, but for what you get and the price you pay, you can very well have some of the same food elsewhere. Pros: Great looking place, location, dessert Cons: PRICE, valet parking (not LOT as listed) more

Wonderful addition to lackluster Atlanta dining scene 10/8/2007

While there might be five new restaurants popping up in Atlanta every week, most of them are mediocre at best. Repast is a definite welcome to an otherwise lackluster dining scene. We tried Repast because it was recommended by coworkers and we also had a gift certificate (which really came in handy since many of their dishes are a bit pricey). Pros: Food, service more

try the octopus salad 9/5/2007

Unlike many of the other reviews, I went to Repast during restaurant week and had a delightful dining experience. You enter the restaurant through a cute little courtyard patio/waiting area. Once inside, the ambiance is very warm and inviting. They have a partially open kitchen in one corner of the restaurant (it adds a nice, lively touch) with a mezzanine level overlooking the seating below. The dimly-lit dining room with candles flickering makes for a perfect date spot. Although they were pretty booked up whenever I called to make the reservation, they made room for my guest and I within several minutes of arriving. Meanwhile, the bar served as a nice waiting point. Once we got to the table, the server was very knowledgeable even though he informed us that it was only his second week. All of his recommendations were fantastic. The menu offers a good variety, anything from a Kobe burger, to lamb chops, to several types of fish and seafood. My favorite item was the octopus salad, which was to die for. My dining partner ordered the cod special, which has a significant amount of bones still in tact. Overall, it was an awesome dining experience. I will surely go back. Pros: ambiance, great food more

Are you Kidding ? Horrible 9/2/2007

Good service and location cannot make up for overpriced fare and over hyped food. I want to encourage new restaurants to come to my community but I'm consistently disappointed with Repast. Wine parings suggested by staff are ALWAYS disappointing. Food portions are often of the amuse bouche serving size when you order a dinner portion. Avoid Tomato Fennel soup as it is highly greasy. Scallops where VERY gritty. This is NOT one bad dining experience I had at this restaurant, this is 5 or 6 times because friends want to try it. I and they are giving up on Repast. BTW ... While they have valet parking, it is a nightmare to get your car back. Pros: Location Cons: Parking, value for $$ more

Never again! Terrible food during restaurant week 9/1/2007

I can only hope that management chose to serve the worst quality cuisine for restaurant week and that this is not standard for Repast. Since it was restaurant week, price was not an issue but the dishes themselves were boring, lacked depth of flavor, and were really somewhat tasteless. We had pork shoulder and chicken which were both the most basic dishes I could imagine...the chicken tasted like the pre-cooked ones you get at Publix...honestly! Dry, tough, and absolutely disgraceful. In typical fashion for restaurants with something to prove, they made us wait at the bar for 30 mins for our 9:15 reservation. We were the last ones in the place and they were cleaning up around us....and it was only 11 or so. The server was nice but that was the only bright spot about this place. FYI...my favorites include Rathbuns, Fritti/Sotto Sotto, Eclipse di Luna, and La Tavola. I would be ashamed if I owned Repast at the quality of the food i served on Friday Aug 31! Pros: Nice server Cons: The food. Boring, no depth of flavor. more

My new favorite restaurant in Atlanta 8/31/2007

My new favorite restaurant! What a beautiful space, and the patio is to die for! Cannot wait until the fall to go have drinks on the bright cabana type patio. Speaking of drinks......the repastini was the absolute best cocktail I've had in ages. I was getting tired of my regular old Belvedere martini. Ginger and green tea with French 75. Yummy yummy! We had the foie gras seared and served with a beautiful fig reduction, tomato soup (with it's own little grilled cheese sandwich), mussels with chorizo, roasted pork with potatoes and roast chicken with crunchy olive salad (with wonderful radishes, baby greens and some sort of lemony viniagrette), lemon infused pasta with creme fraiche and chocolate/penut butter potdecreme. With a lovely pinot gris to wash it all down. The service was spot on and very pleasant. As we went for restaurant week, I didn't pay too much attention to the prices on the ""real"" menu, but one of my fellow diners did, and she said it was very reasonable. Can't wait to go back; might call them now to see if they have any reservations left for tomorrow night.........run, don't walk to repast! Pros: Amazing food, great service, beautiful space Cons: None, other than funky food paintings in rest rooms? more

Outstanding meal and service 6/20/2007

The cab driver wasn't sure where Repast was, but I think they will all know soon. We had a great meal and wine suggested by the chef. The restaurant was on the cusp of changing from the spring menu to the summer menu. Our party of three tried dishes from each. The appetizer of fresh tomatoes and grilled cheese was very flavorful and a nice way to start the evening. My wife had the quail and loved it. My business partner very much enjoyed the grits and shrimp--sounds like an odd combination but it really worked. I had the lamb which was the most flavorful lamb I have tasted outside of Australia. more
