Absolutely wonderful 6/20/2010

We just returned to Saginaw from having a wonderful meal at the Prickly Pear Cafe. We looked on the internet for a place to meet for dinner. Our daughter and son in law drove up, from their home in Ohio, to meet us for Father's Day. When we looked at the menu for Prickly Pear Cafe (on this website) we decided to try it. The menu is extensive. Once there we found convenient parking behind the cafe. The food was wonderful. The service was great. Although, the place is small, the atmosphere was unique. Don't let any negative reviews sway you. This place is worth a try. Highly recommended. Pros: Extensive menu Cons: Small more

Dull, Dull, Dull 7/17/2008

I was excited to try this restaurant as there hasn't been a good southwestern restaurant in the Detroit area since Brian Polcyn's Chimayo in Pontiac. Please remove the word ""Southwest"" from the name of this place. Anyone that has traveled in the southwest would agree this is not southwestern cuisine. They simply serve mediocre tex-mex food with maybe a lighter touch. Their down fall begins with the salsa - some flavorless chopped tomatoes and onion, dull. The sweet potato pancakes? Dull. They might as well give you a micro waved sweet potato. The jalape?o chicken wrap? Dull, no spice, no flavor and no jalape?os. So sad, and yet it can be so easy. Roasted green and red chilies are a mainstay in any southwestern food and would provide some life in their otherwise dull presentations. Pros: Fast service, Good Lemonade, Outdoor Seating, Lighter Tex-Mex Food Cons: Pale Version of Southwestern Flavor more

Good variety of mexican. 11/19/2006

There have good margaritas and variety of mexican food. It is not the typical dishes always offered, they there is some of that. A good variety where you can find something you like. Pros: Good food, ambiance and not too big. Cons: Expensive for simple dishes more

Overrated 1/19/2005

The ambience at Prickly Pear is nice, and the staff is nice as well; there are also vegetarian options. However, the rice was bland, as was the salsa, and there were unlisted ingredients in my enchilada (fruit) that I didn't like. The food was also pretty cold by the time I got it. I think this place is overrated and the food is not good enough to justify the prices. more

The best 5/26/2004

Very cozy restaurant. The best margarita for your money and the buffalo enchiladas are not to be outdone. Pros: Great Food, Great Margaritas, Romantic Cons: , not enough seating, No reservations more

Try It - with an asterick! 12/29/2003

The food was top notch, the service was excellent and prompt, and the margaritas were delicious. The asterick is this - it is a long and narrow resturant that when full is incredibly noisy and incredibly cramped. The waiters have to run a guantlet and obstacle course just to take an order. Parking is a bit of a pain to since it is downtown. If you are there in nice weather take advantage of the outdoor seating, but get there very early or be prepared to wait - they don't take reservations! All that being said - the food is really worth a visit! Pros: Food, Service Cons: Parking, Noise, Cramped more

Perfect on a summer night! 12/3/2002

The dining room is tiny, but the sidewalk tables out front are great for people-watching and the back patio is beautiful with lots of vines and shady trees strung with lights. The food is a somewhat gourmet take on southwestern fare and is delicious, as are the margaritas. I have tried most of the things on the menu and have liked all of them. If there's a long wait for a table, I recommend walking down the street and grabbing coffee or a drink at Cafe Felix. Pros: great outdoor dining, good people-watching, beautiful patio Cons: small dining room, not a lot of parking more
