Great Martial Arts Classes 4/13/2010

This is a great martial arts school because the owner is very hands-on and the instructors are very knowledgeable. There are several different styles offered for any level, including beginning. If you really want to get in shape the right way and learn good technique, this is the place. They work you hard and you will see results! Pros: Variety of martial arts styles, woman owned, great location more

best workout in chicago 3/8/2010

This is by far the best workout that I have found in Chicago. It is challenging for all levels of fitness. There are a wide variety of classes and boredom is never an option. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. My favorite classes are usually the ones that are taught by Katalin, the owner. She's one of those rare finds in the fitness world who, as an instructor, inspires her students to do better. This gym is truly a hidden gym...though I have to admit, it is pretty easy to get there by either public transit or car. The only thing that can be difficult is limiting yourself to the number of classes you will take in any one given evening. I'm not sure why it is, but in any 45 min class, you may feel tired at one point but by the end, your brain will chime in and say what a great time you had and you find yourself sticking around for the next class. more

No Other Place Like It 2/15/2010

I love training at POW. It is so different that any other type of center. It is more of a school than a health club, but I dropped my health club membership when I started a couple years ago, because the classes are so intense that there was no point of going to the gym. At first I didn't think I was a class person - but I cant not imagine training any other way now. The classes are always different. Kat the owner changes things up all the time and has the other instructors change their routines too - so it isnt boring ever. Learning to punch and kick has given me so much confidence and body changed 3 months later. I take all the classes, except jiujitsu, even though it is so popular, I just prefer learning the punching and kick sports. Kat focuses on so much technique without it being slow. Said is newer to the staff over the last year and he is crazy fun as well. Pros: Diversity/Instruction/Bang for the Buck Cons: Kat doesn;t teach on weekends more

Knowledgeable Staff; Get In Shape & Learn A Skill 2/15/2010

I've been a student at POW for almost 5 years now and I highly recommend it. It's like having a personal trainer while still getting to work out with other people. The school offers a wide variety of classes (Krav Maga, Muay Thai, Boxing, Kickboxing and Brazilian Jujitsu ) at a wide variety of times, which is helpful for someone with a busy schedule like me. It's not a traditional martial arts school with belt degrees, so you have a lot of flexibility to study what you what, and how often you want. Some students exclusively focus on one thing like boxing or BJJ, while others take the whole spectrum of classes. Pros: Flexible Schedule, Variety of Classes, Great Teachers more

Great Workout, Great Place 2/3/2010

I've been coming to POW for over 6 months and I love it. I have never been in such great shape and have never enjoyed working out so much. Each class is totally different, so you NEVER get bored. Each month has a different focus, and the owner/head instructor gives special seminars that are built around that focus. One month you might get a great core workout plan and the next month an eating plan. I really like the well rounded "fitness" program that is put together. The owner is truly passionate about her business and it shows. Pros: great instructors, friendly staff, awesome workout more

Disappointing Experience 6/23/2009

So when I came across Pow!! on the web I was super excited. It seemed to have everything I wanted: a multitude of co-ed classes that not only taught serious martial arts technique and forms but also a good solid cardio workout. more

Degerberg Academy 2 12/3/2007

I had high hopes for this place. WhenI saw on their website that they taught like 15 different Martial Arts, especially Brazillian Ju Jutsu and MMA, an alarm went off in my head saying, "...careful, sounds like another Degerberg type school". Boy was I right. It's like an exact replica of Degerberg, only these guys have "better" Martial Art styles to learn from which is a big plus (Degerberg doesn't have BJJ or MMA or Krav Maga). That's what I like to see in a place. Sure, let the kids have their Karate and Tae Kwon Do, but for REAL Martial Arts I credit them for teaching these adcanced, UFC style disciplines. Speaking of UFC, former Heavyweight Champion Andrei Arlovski used to train here as well. So, if this place had what i wanted, what's with the low rating? It has to do with location and price. Sure, it's good if you can afford to frequent the West Loop side of Chicago everyday of if you live there, but the traffic and gas getting to and from really turns me off. Plus, it is pricy and has that "Degerberg feel" to everything. Sorry to say it since it really does have what I want, but with my prior experience i'm trusting my gut this time and staying away. Pros: Brazilian Ju Jutsu/ Krav Maga/ MMA training, former UFC champion trains here Cons: price, location more

Unprofessional, Low quality instructors 11/24/2007

Very unprofessional business. Pros: Close to loop Cons: Low quality instructors, beligerant and quarrelsome staff, opressive environment more

Awesome Place 3/14/2005

This is the type of place that is serious about getting you in shape and keeping you in shape and the people are so friendly... Pros: Clean, Personable Staff more
