Best Vegetarian Indian Restaurant in L.A. 6/2/2010

I've introduced my friends and family to try the best vegetarian Indian restaurant in L.A. And everyone agrees that Paru's is quite exceptional! A friend of mine took me here back in 2004 and I fell in love with ""Tanjore Double"". Basically, it comes with Masala Dosa, Idli, Vadai, Uppuma, vegetable curry, Sambar and Chutney. And if you want something a little bit more spicy, try their stuffed Paratha, or just order the ""Punjab Glory"" entree. Pros: Atmosphere, service, vegetarian more

Money down the drain 9/26/2009

Pathetic service coupled by rude attitude. We were 2 families and ordered 2-3 dishes. Most dished very pretty blend, asif they just boiled it and brought it in front of us except for Gobhi Allo, which looked decent in taste. However, potato pieces were way undercooked. When we told them, we got a bad stare and he just took it away. Never brought it back or asked for anything. We had ordered 3-4 more rotis thinking he would get Gobi Aalo back, he never bothered. Overall Bad food and Bad service. Pros: Worst Attitute and ill mannered Cons: Full of drawbacks more

Perfect stop for veggie Indian 3/7/2008

Passing through the buzzer iron gates and somewhat dingy outer patio makes the cozy interior feel even more intimate. The two guys that run the show in the dining room are super friendly and helpful, and they serve you pretty fantastic food. A lot, for the money. At first glance it might not look like there's a lot of variety on the meatless menu, but that's in part because each dish comes with a lot of variety itself. Make sure to try the paratha, it's great here. Pros: feel safe trying anything on the menu-- each dish will have at least a few things you'll love Cons: going in a largish group can be hard to find a table, though the guys work hard to accomodate more

Charming & Delicious, I'll be back soon! 11/29/2007

I'm not a vegetarian, but a trusted vegetarian friend of mine gave this place her word. Still, the dinky outside kept me away a couple months until one night my boyfriend and I decided to dine at Paru's. What a treat! Don't judge a restaurant by it's ""cover"", inside Paru's is wonderfully charming, like a grandparent's living room or a scene from a Wes Anderson film. Pleasant staff and delicious food. Masla Dosa is a must. Mixed vegetable curry, mmm and the best raita (yogurt) I've ever had. Raita with a kick! Highly recommended for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike, you'll leave satisfied and look forward to returning. Cons: don't have many traditional (well, what I know of Indian food from L.A. and London) curries more

YuM! 8/16/2007

Wow.....now I never write these reviews, but the food at Parus is really amazing. The samosa's are delicious and theTanjure dinner is mind-blowing. Very good service (cute waiter too!)and a very relaxed scene. Parking is a bit of a hassel, but if you are a vegetarian then this place is a must:) more

Best Indian food since Berkeley 4/15/2007

I lived up in the bay area for a while and fell in love w/ Indian food. Since moving south 4 years ago this is the first place that matched the traditional food I had up north. The Masala Dosa is excellent and a meal in itself. The chickpea curry was spicy with a hint of sweetness. I like my mango lassi a little on the thinner side, not watery but not so thick it reminds me of batter, and their's is perfect and served cold. The specials give a wide variety of choices and are a great value. They didn't have all my favorites, since it is south Indian vegetarian, but every dish I tried was excellent. more

A diamond in the rough! 12/14/2006

I lived accross the street from this place for years without realizing it was there... Similarly, people dining here for the 1st time often miss the entrance and walk right by (probably because it's gated and you have to be buzzed in). But don't let this fool you! Once inside, it's like you're magically transported to India. There's a lovely courtyard garden with tables, followed by a smallish but very cozy restaurant. Last Monday we fooloshly went without making reservations - the fact that this place was PACKED on a Monday night (with a line of people waiting!) speaks for itself. If you're cool with vegetarian, this place rocks! Pros: Tasty, healthy, authentic Indian food! Cons: Can get packed more

By Far Some of the Best Indian Food in LA!!! 10/26/2006

I stumbled upon Paru's while on a trip to Freestyle Photo, and it was the best discovery I have ever made. Literally a hole in the wall, you walk into a magical garden with umbrellas, fountains, colorful paper lanterns, decorative pillows, and some of the best food I have ever found. After eating here, I can see why people are vegetarians! Everything they make is so fresh and flavorful- it really seems that they care about their food and want to only serve the best to their customers. Their sampler/combination/lunch platters are a great option to share with another person if your on a budget but still want good food. I have never ever had a bad experience with Paru's, either with dine-in or pick-up, and whole heartedly recommend it to anyone who loves indian food- the servers are courteous and friendly, the ambience is perfect, the food is amazing, and the prices are reasonable. Pros: Everything: food, staff, ambience- perfect! Cons: nothing :-) (okay... maybe parking...) more

Great Vegetarian Fare 7/30/2006

Its the best hole in the wall ever. It's unassuming at first, but once you press that buzzard and the host lets you in, you step into a lush landscape and forget that you're in LA. The owner usually greets you at the door with the most friendliest of smiles. I mean if you love Indian food, you must visit this place. Not only for the atmosphere, but for the experience. Pros: Service, Food, People Cons: Street Parking more

A small Piece of Heaven 4/2/2006

Paru's is like a trip to a small village in the south of India. The food is always wonderful regardless of the day or time of day. I visit here with freinds that say they hate vegetarian food and by the end of dinner they say ""wow!!, I never knew Indian vegetarian food was so good and so varied. more

a one of a kind indian dining experience 3/29/2006

theres something quasi-magical about paru's, it might have something to do with the contrast between the nasty location and exterior with the warmth and intimacy of the interior. something about being let in after ringing the doorbell already makes you feel invited, like youre having dinner at a friends house, the food is not the typical indian fare, i frequent indian restaurants all over the country and i had to ask what 80% of the dishes on the menu were, its very heavy on the carbs so u south-beach dieters might wanna stick to the side dishes like curried vegetables or masala, the flavor of everything was exquisite, and being a vegan, im always happy to see restaurants endorsing cruelty-free healthy menus, id go back here in a heartbeat, highly recommended!! ;) Pros: great food, intimate ambience, veggie friendly Cons: bad location, limited menu options more

My Personal Favorite! 1/7/2006

The food at Parus is both delicious and authentic. The ambience is very low-key and welcoming. The dinner special are reasonable, great somosas! The night we were their Paul McCartney was in. High recommended. Pros: Good Service, Great Food Cons: Parking more

Far from South Indian Food 12/22/2005

First the place is good & nicely decorated. The service was good. The food was hot and was ready in reasonable time. Now to the Food Part. It is completely different from South Indian. The food may be good for people who doesn't want any spice at all or doesn't know how actual South Indian Food is. If you are from South India and have high hopes then please don't go here. The DOSA (Cirspy stuff made from Rice/Cream of Wheat) was not tasty at all. Again I am comparing to typical South Indian Food. So If you want to have typical South Indian stuff try other place not this one. Pros: Ambience, Service, Quick Cons: Little Costly, Not Authentic more

Cheaper than actually going to Madras 1/30/2005

I spent a month in South India a few years ago, and this is by far the closest thing in the states to that I have found, (and I have looked). Even in NYC, where I am from, there are a few VERY expensive places in midtown that cater to high minded business types, but they can't hold a candle to Paru's. I question why there is a big poster of Sai Baba, but that's just me. Seriously, if you have only ever been to the Indian places in strip malls or something (which I am sure some are excellent), try this out. Pros: Wonderful food, authentic decor, incredible staff Cons: small, confusing menu, only 1! more

Delicious South Indian Food 11/11/2004

A wonderful hideway near Silverlake & Los Feliz. The outside leaves you wondering but this is real diamond i n the rough. Authenic home-style south indian vegetarian dishes are served here. Its simple but delicious and leaves you peacefully blissed out. The patio has tables which is great in the summer time , otherwise request a table inside the small house in the back. All in all a gem! Pros: Healthy, Delicious, Inexpensive Cons: , Busy more

Warm Atmosphere and Food with Depth 10/31/2004

Don't let the caged outside scare you, Paru's may not be in a great area- but the food inside will make it worth the risk. The dining room is very small, if you want room to stretch out, take a seat in the outside patio area. The entrees are very large, VERY filling for one person- but not quite enough for two. I was dissapointed by the absence of naan on the menu, but was pleasantly suprised by the wealth of items I had never seen before. I ordered the ""Tandore Double"" a large platter composed of chutneys, breads, sauces, idilli, vadai, and uppuma. Each part of the dish stood out and added its own unique flavor. Service was very quick, a little too quick actually, and the waitstaff was very amiable. Overall, not outstanding, but I'd definitely go back for the ambience and all around quality. Pros: Intimate Environment, Great Value, Delicious Food more

Never a dull moment! 8/14/2004

This place is a sanctuary! We dine here all the time, it's like coming home! The staff, waiter and owner really knows his/their business! The food is very, very good and very authentic!!! The place is very spiritual (very cozy and there's nothing like it). Overall, the people are very, very nice and the food they serve is Heaven!!!! I'm not a vegetarian, my girlfriend is, but I'll travel far for this! Pros: ambience, professionalism, good food/service more

passage to india 2/5/2004

paru's has easily become one of my favorite L.A. restaurants. this hole-in-the-wall restaurant is easy-to-miss, but i personally prefer it that way. it still unfortunately catches some hollywood fuzz, but for the most part, its aura is untainted and remains peaceful, relaxing and very authentic. its indoor seating is sparse, about ten tables total, and you don't have much room between them. somehow, the place remains quiet even when packed and people are standing at the door, staring at you and your food savagely! the vegetarian platters (yogi's delight) are delicious. i highly recommend the lentil soup as an appetizer. the prices are unbelievably reasonable. and the wait staff, as down-to-earth as you could hope for, especially in L.A. Pros: authentic indian food, peaceful atmosphere, pretty outdoor patio Cons: , tiny parking lot more

Excellent Service and Food 11/13/2003

One of the best waiters I have ever seen. Great food. I will recommend it to everyone who eats vegetarian food. Pros: Service, Food, Price Cons: Neighborhood more
