It's a nice quiet small place. The food is... regular chinese food. The menu has a decent selection, and its a good place to chat with a few friends. I didn't get fast service when i went though.. I don't think the food deserves as much praise as people are giving it, but its definitely better than any pan-asian place. The waitresses and servers are great at holding conversations in both Korean and Chinese. If you know what to get, you're in for a treat every single time. more

Authentic Chinese Cuisine 8/8/2005

Mandarin House is a complete dining experience. While its appearances may fool you on the outside, inside it’s truly an elegant place to eat. The ambiance is perfect, and to complement it, you are served herbal tea when you sit down, free of charge. Aside from looks, the food is just superb. As opposed to many Chinese food places, there is a smaller selection to choose from, as they are not trying to recreate every Asian dish known to man. They make authentic Chinese food extremely well. None of the food is over-sauced like in most other places and everything is tasty. Prices are great, especially when comparing the quality of the dining experience to other Asian restaurants in the area. I only wish they delivered – food has to be picked up, or dine-in. more

Mediocre 8/6/2005

I've been to Mandarin House twice and I'd have to say that their Chinese food is only par. The reason is that it is really a Korean restaurant in disguise. If you look at their menu, half of the items are Korean, and it is Korean owned. Therefore, their regular Chinese food (ie fried rice) doesn't taste as authentic as it could. Despite this, there is a welcome Asian authenticity to the taste, which cannot be said for the other Asian restaurants in Evanston. Oh yeah, and the portions are small compared to the price. If you're going for volume, try Joy Yee's. more

relatively authentic korean food 8/6/2005

this hole in the wall serves the best korean food in evanston, and decent chinese food. this looks like a german beerhouse which adds some character to the place. entrees range from $7 to $10 and include rice and a side of kimchee. lunch specials are cheaper - around $6 and include soup, rice, and kimchee. good place for home-style korean food. more
