I worked with Stanley on designing a one-of-a-kind engagement ring. The design was completed within a few days, I was shown 4 gorgeous stones from which to choose, and the finished product was perfect, completed within a couple of weeks, and for less money than we originally thought it would cost. WE LOVE THE RING!!!!!

This is the most unlikely of stores to be so very popular, but I have never been to Dave's Rock Shop and not found a crowd there. What do they sell? Fossils, geodes, precious gems for jewelry-making, and jewelry. The selection is fantastic for anyone who likes to make jewelry, and there is a range of prices. Staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Its a strange, if friendly, cast of characters who frequent Dave's, but that makes it just that much more unique. Great fun for the kid in your life, even if that's you.

They sell really unique items here, including stationary and journals that make great gifts for hard-to-shop for friends. They also have a great selection of greeting cards that are unique and a bit off the beaten path. They also carry a whole line of paint brushes, canvasas, and that sort if you are interested.

This out of the way bookstore is a gem. Located in the rear of the 1712 Sherman building it tends to get overlooked by passersby. To find it, keep a look out for the alley, hence the name Bookman's Alley. Prices are reasonable. Staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. Check store hours before going - I believe it is open late one night during the week.

I have been going to Peter for almost 30 years. Peter is a true old world watch maker and craftsman. I have had him rebuild and repair probably 25 mechanical watches and he does incredible work for very reasonable prices and his quality is just top-notch. I have recommended him to numerous friends over the years and everyone has been very satisfied. It is rare to find watchmakers and watch craftsmen like Peter these days.

This eccelectic gift store contains goods made by individuals in primarily third-world countries, and your purchase goes direcly to support them. The store operates as a not-for-profit entity. Beautiful, unique, hand-crafted items such as rugs, jewelery, clothing, pottery, home decor items. Special section of Christmas available year-round. You could spend an hour just browsing here, there is so much to look at. Prices are reasonable--not really bargains, but not overpriced. And you can feel good about what you are buying here.

Paper Source is a wonderful store, with several locations in the Chicagoland area, but my favorite is in Evanston. Ok, the Oak Park store is very nice, too. Paper Source is one of those old-fashioned-idea-new-take-on-it kind of places. They carry load of clever cards, lots of sold-by-the-sheet papers that are truly beautiful, and many things related to paper, including pens, notebooks, ribbon, and so on. Paper Source offers lots of great classes, so get on their mailing list next time you visit. There is so much great stuff here, you just might find yourself longing for the good old days when people actually still wrote letters instead of emails.
