Like so many other folks, I love the Century Theatres in Evanston. They offer an amazing selection of the current movies on offer. If you want to see the latest blockbuster, it's here; if you're more of the Indie type, you can find that too. This theater is an experience. While you're waiting, you can grab a cocktail or play a game of pool. Sure they have the regular popcorn and soft drinks, but who doesn't love a glass of wine to argue over once you've seen the movie? I can't say enough good things about this movie theater. Not only has it been a great addition to downtown Evanston, it offers a wide range of shows. Sign up online for their weekly email, and get free snacks too. Park across the street and take your ticket to get stamped at the theater. I have convinced many die-hard Chicagoans to travel north for their movie going. It's certainly worth the trip.

While I have my own mikes and a couple of monitor speakers, owning a sound system capable of playing to 300 - 500 people outside is very, very expensive. The speakers alone would have been an addiitonal $1400, easy.
Instead, I found that Guitar Works has great renatl sound systems for under $100 featuring Yorkville speakers and powered mixers.
The staff was very helpful in showing me how to hook everything up and managing it on the gig.
They are real pros there.

More
The Historical Society is housed in what was formerly the Dawes mansion across the street from the lakefront. From 1904-57 the the Dawes family resided here. There is a school in Evanston as well as lots of other things named in rememberance of one of Evanston's most famous citizens. Charles Dawes achieved many great things in his life including serving as Vice President of the United States!
I went on a private tour which starts with a video presentation, then I was guided thru-out this facinating mansion. The guide was extremely knowledgeable and was a volunteer from Northwestern University. Part of the second floor is dedicated to Civil War history.

Dr. Wax has a gigantic collection of CD's, making up most of the store, but there is also a vinyl section that isn't very large but covers the basics. I can't seem to recall if they have tapes, but they do have a bunch of rock posters hanging on the walls that are available for purchase. The people at the counter also seem to know what they're doing and to be able to tell you what you're looking for and recommend things. Overall, a fun local place to definitely support.

The Custer Street Arts Fair is one of the best street fairs in the Chicago area, typically held on the third weekend of June, which includes Father's Day on Sunday.
Lots of great food and arts and crafts to purchase, including great tie-dye clothing and lots, lots more. Plus, there's super entertainment on two main statges and a children's stage.
My own band has performed there for several years. In fact, my picture was taken on the Custer stage. We'll have a one-hour set at 1pm on Sunday, June 18, on the main stage at Custer and Main Streets in Evansrton. I hope to see you there!

More
Paul Maslin (the PM in PM woodwind) is a nice man, one of the best tenor sax players in town and one of the best woodwind repairment in the COUNTRY. His store, which provides small repairs by appointment and more involved repairs by schedule does quality work. Paul's worked on most of my saxophones at one time or another, and Jason, his clarinet technician has repaired my bass clarinet successfully. Tom Peterson, an outstanding flute repairman is also based in the store, as is Greg Fishman, a distinguished private saxophone teacher.
Paul maintains an extensive inventory of quality used woodwinds, particularly Selmer Mark VI saxophones, that can be perused at www.pmwoodwind.com. I bought my Selmer Mark VI tenor from him several years ago and it's brought me great pleasure in playing.
He also has a nice inventory of mouthpieces and reeds.
Paul's great to deal with and I recommend him and his store highly.

Good: great state of the art sound, interesting music, nice space, there for the right reasons.
Union Pizza is in the same building and has GREAT food.. Bad: not enough people there to hear great music!. Improvements: i would like more ethnic, swing & country acts. Like the country and square dance that they have had there. I think they don't advertise well enough, especially for niche music and dance events..
