Cape Cod Room

This was undoubtedly THE worst meal that I have had in years. The lobster in the lobster thermidor was seriously SPOILED. The chef should have known this from the smell alone. I was foolish enough to ignore what I smelled and take a bite. I returned it after the first bite, and the waiter took it back to the kitchen and returned with sincere apologies from the chef, offering me something else. The next dish was the salad with hearts of palm that were not canned, but fresh. This would ordinarly be a great thing ... IF they were actually cooked enough. They were so tough as to be impossible to chew. Like tree bark. The shrimp had almost no flavor at all, which considering what the lobster tasted like may have been a blessing, I suppose. Now to add insult to injury, they charged $54 for a the special request dish for our child, which was some fish sticks. That's MORE than the price of the lobster thermidor, and when I pointed that out, the waiter realized this did seem a bit much, so he took $10 off. That's still $44 for fish sticks - and not even good tasting ones! I tried a bite, and it tasted oily and old. The place was virtually empty, which should have been our first clue, but considering the reputation of this once-great place, we ignored that sign. The waiters were excellent. I will say that. Old world charm, and grace. But I go to a restaurant for enjoyable food. The prices were absurdly high for a terrible meal. Pros: Good service. Cons: High prices and terrible food. more

We ate there on a Tuesday night in May of 2007. There were very few people in the place, maybe 3-4 tables of 2-4 people. The wait staff was nice but very formal for the theme of the place. It is ""Cape Cod"" and the waiters all have English as a second language and are very stuffy. I am not sure anyone who worked there had ever been to Cape Cod. The place looks like Cape Cod but then once the people interact with you it seems out of place. On Cape Cod this kind of place is very nice with good food but casual too. The food was good but not outstanding. We had the soup for starters. I had the clam chowder and it had an odd spice in it that I could not place that overwhelmed the dish. My husband had the lobster bisque and it was good but not the best we ever had. We then ordered the the crab cake and lobster for me and the steak and lobster for him. All very good except the crab cake had that strange spice/taste from the soup. We then had the key lime pie and the apple tart, EXCELLENT!! We had two glasses of white wine between us. The check with $200 including the tip, the bill before tip was about $170. Overall a good experience but just a bit off the mark when it came to what Cape Cod is really like. I say send the staff on a week trip in the summer for some pointers. Pros: Key lime pie, apple tart, steak, lobster, wine and in the Drake where we were staying, so nice to go upstairs after the meal. Cons: crab cakes, clam chowder and the theme of the place does not go with the type of service staff they have. Cape Cod is relaxed and this is somewhat uptight. more

WHat can you say about the Cape Cod Room? Old School? Stuffy? We are better than you are service mentality? Way over the top prices? A Chicago tradition? A beautiful room with a menu and a Wine list that is what fine dining is all about? Yes, Yes, and Yes. Yes, the Cape Cod Room has a lot to live up to based on their long time reputation. And yes, there has been an over all slippage in service and in quality which has been commensurate with the escalating prices that the menu, the cocktails and the Wine List has seen. The two main issues with the Cape Cod room are service and prices. We perservered and had a good meal and a lovely time. Eating here is almost like a walk back in time. This was a place you looked forward to visiting. Now, the prices are too high for the quality and the service is an argumentative abomination. They screw up orders and then argue that you, the customer, don't know what you requested in the first place. Complaining to the host is pointless. No waitstaff with primary skills in English. Hilton has wrecked it. more

It was my 25th wedding anniversary, so I never said anything to the waiters because I didn't want to ruin the mood for my husband and grown children, but my food was awful! And I know it must have cost my husband a fortune. I had tuna which was supposed to be seared but seemed almost microwaved. Pale on top and greyish, the tuna was rare only in the middle, not evenly rare to the edges, and lukewarm, rubbery and grainy! The potato seemed reheated, too hard on top to cut through with a knife, and too salty below. The beans were cold. The bread was even undistinguished, and felt more like the cold selection thrown on the table at a deli. The chocolate ice cream pie had a crust you couldn't easily cut through, was undistinguished in taste, and the so-called hot fudge sauce was barely warm chocolate sauce. more

We had lunch at Cape Cod Room on November 15, 2004 and enjoyed the food and ambiance. Restaurants of this type are exceedingly rare and it is a 71 yr. Chicago tradition. The lobster, crabmeat and shrimp plate I had cold and fresh and my fellow diner's Mahi Mahi was broiled to perfection. The waiters are kind of campy in their Admiral's uniforms, but they are in line with the general aura of the place. I'd go back there anytime. Pros: ambiance, bar service, lobster more

Unfornuately, my husband and I with friends wanted to celebrate our annniversaries with style and good food. The dinner on the evening of the 5th of October was very disappointing. Our food was of poor quality for the prices. Service was intermittened. more concerned with other number of tables, people moving to different tables which meant that our order was taken 3 different times. My dinner was tough, ""fishy"" and when asked if I wanted something else, what I asked for was not given to me. Since ther are so many other places to dine in Chicago, this should be a wake up call to your staff..we dine out quite often this was truly disappointing. The Cape Cod Room is located inside the Drake Hotel. The food was very good but be prepared for the bill, a meal for two can easily be $80. Price aside the food was excellent, very fresh and well prepared. Although if you don't look like you have money, you may get seated in an out of the way table. more
