Slouching towards mediocrity 10/2/2011

What difference only a year can make. The Galleria area CPK, once alive and bright, has now fallen into the category of mediocrity in service, ambience and overpriced fare. This once cheerful place used to have smiling hosts, upbeat waitstaff and reasonably priced pizza. That has sadly changed. The host both overweight in a slovenly sort of way and whose voice was barely audible, almost reluctantly spoke to us in a sort of bothered manner. Who interviews these peope anyway? It took her 5 minutes just to know we were even there. The waitstaff, seemingly barely of drinking age seem to have a collective apathetic attitude and a you're-lucky-I'm-waiting-on-you demeanor. I told my resident pizza expert (my son) that for this price we could have had 5 full sized Papa John's Pizzas and with friendly people waiting on us. I mean , the gall of me, wanting good service and friendly staff. I must be gettin old. Never again. more

Food is Fine/Service is Appalling 9/25/2010

In today's twisted economy, diners are becoming more discerning about how often they dine out and when they choose a place, they want that experience to be worthwhile. Why is it that some restaurants, like CPK, don't recoginize the importance of dependable and quick service? My family and I ate lunch at the Post Oak location today and while the food was wonderful, the service was super retarded. Two members of my family approached a different staff member, one who was a manager, to ask if someone was planning to wait on us. We sat for more than 15 minutes without drinks before someone cruised by to take our orders. And then we waited another 10 minutes before the tardy drinks arrived. No diner should ever have to wait 25 minutes for a glass of water, okay. One of my family members wanted a side of diced avocado with her soup, and once again, a longer than necessary wait. About that time, I had to ask for a refill of my water glass. Why should a diner have to ask for a refill? CPK needs to get their service wired tight because plenty of other establishments in this city serve top notch pizza and salads. more

so this is what fusion pizza taste like 11/22/2006

a great place to try some interesting pizza combinations paired with red wine and a cozy, laid-back ambience. also a great place to take a date or a group of friends.* Pros: interesting pizzas, ambience Cons: parking more

Interesting Pizza 11/17/2006

This is a very contempary joint. If you are looking for very interesting combinations on pizza this is your place. The crust is nice and buttery not just plain dough. The thai chicken is my favorite but I always have to try a new one when I go. It is best if you go with a group and order a few pizzas and share. So many are good it is so hard to choose just one. Pros: Service more

Great dishes/Service lacking/Good Value 8/21/2006

The dishes are great. The pizza is very creative and has a soft crust. The pasta is good, but not wonderful. The salads are great also, I recommend the Waldorf Chicken Salad. \r Service is not all that great. They consistently get special dishes incorrect. Depending on the server, you can go a long time without drink refills. If you love great food, even at an occassional discount to service, the California Pizza Kitchen is your place. Pros: Food, Ambience, Value Cons: Service more

Most creative pizza in town! 7/27/2005

Everytime I eat here I try a new pizza and have never been disappointed. The menu is very eclectic and you can always find something that suits your mood. The free bread leaves something to be desired though. The servings are large and come to you sizzling hot. I enjoy the fact that there are many healthy choices on the menu other than the usual salad. The service is okay, but not the best. That hasn't kept me from coming back again and again though. It's so much better than any generic pizza place around here. Tastes like the pizza I'd make at home...fresh, quality ingredients, and not greasy. more

not all that!` 6/19/2003

Best Non-Traditional Food 1/4/2003

CPK has the best non-traditional food in town. Their pizza is okay, but there other foods such as kung pao spaghetti is awesome! Pros: Great Food more

A nice surprise 12/5/2002

my husband and I had to take a bussiness trip to Houston, several months ago. We had tried several places to eat always passing the california pizza kitchen before we decided to stop in and try it. Looking at the menu we were not sure if this was something that was our style but we ordered anyway. It was interesting how they cooked the pizzas in what looked like a fireplace. The environment was comfortable, a place that we could bring our children without worrying about disturbing other customers. the pizza arriveb at our table still sizzling from the oven. As we ate our generous serving of pizza we savored the wonderful flavors this pizza offered. We are from Amarillo Texas and all we have here is places like Pizza Hut. Maybe someone will decide that the people of Amarilo need to know what a really good pizza taste like. more

the west IS the best 8/13/2002

yeah, so i went here last week...and, yeah, i ordered this pizza. It was a sweet Hawaiian with fresh pineapples, rich ham, and earthy, ripe tomatoes. Hearty to say the least. At one point I had to be reminded that i was indeed in California Pizza Kitchen, and NOT in heaven. Coulda fooled me.... Pros: good music, bathroom band, crayons Cons: crowds, wait staff rude, parking lot full more

good food, service is lax 7/2/2002

food is good, but i think the pizzas got smaller. also the staff is really lazy. half the time they were just chattin amongst themselves. the selection is incredible but expect larger pizzas like they use to for the money you pay. Pros: selection, food, taste Cons: service, good parking more
